Giggsy played two youngster last season and we were better. Today, van Gaal used two players and we did not look dangerous. I hope we have a plan there to deal with the next game.

We looked better because to be honest they had just sacked moyes. I do not think it would be possible to look any worse

Yes, I agree mate, but look at these pictures below. It's mainly Fletchers fault because he has to cover up that space but if he's not doing that, Ander has to cover up.

that's exactly my point, same thing happened last season, typical 2013/2014 goal

so who was supposed to track KI?

He was left with yards of space, as always our midfield gets over-ran

Dunno, that guy was also at fault. Really a cascade of errors. And that against a mediocre side. Either way CB needs quality reinforcements.

We seriously need a top/world class CB

With Woodward spouting rubbish, don't be surprised if we only spend £20m-£30m between now and september

We've conceded similar goals for the past years as our central midfield are non existent. This is a conceded goal from when we won the league 2012/13.

Marking was non-existent for 2nd goal.

It was worse for the first. Mata left Ki all by himself, Ki noticed, pulled away from him as the ball went wide, stood on the top of the 18 yard and had enough time to place his shot into the corner of the net. All while Mata still failed to get back and cover his man.

That was Mata's failure to keep track of his man, not Fletcher's responsibility. Mata was tracking Ki and he inexplicably started drifting to where the ball was being played near the touch line, leaving the Korean all sorts of space to run into, which he obviously did.

That's not his job lol.. He's covered by two CM's for a reason. Says a lot when you think it's the number 10's job to track midfield runners.

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left the transfer window has been woeful. Poor planning has lead to a very slow decline, then when Fergie left is became a drastic decline. Only way to solve that is to spunk about £120m.

Couldn't agree more, but think it will take more ££ than that

It's exactly the no. 10's job to track opposing midfielders under those circumstances.

I only saw the second half of the match and fletcher was woeful in the whole of second half. Too many misplaced passes for my liking, no real power and drive in the middle of the park from him. That, coupled with the fact that fellaini is almost static and that he's such a slow player, if you're trying to win a game or chasing it they, sure, are not the right combo to inspire a team to achieving any of that.

Its like groundhog day alright. We always seem to be conceding goals from the same sort of position for the last few years.

Is mata going to be kagawafied? This is how it started with shinji then confidence gets in the mix..

One for the Ed Woodward thread:

Ed Woodward's watch this space becomes more idiotic by the minute. When he says that he implies funds are there and he even said that specifically. So then, he's incompetent. He must go if he once again screws up another vital transfer window. Half our squad won't get into any top 4 side. Time for Glazers to realize that you get what you pay for.

In the bigger scheme of things it's just one game but I still hope it forces us to dip in the transfer market. Pay over the odds, but get the quality and the numbers. Ship off deadwood wherever possible.

On the match, it was a disjointed display. I just saw a bunch of individuals out there.

Why did he bring on fellaini? Kagawas days must be numbered if he isn't seen as a better option than fellaini. particularly after mata played so poor.

What people are not understanding is, in SAF last year, everyone knew we had a bottom 4 PL midfield in terms of quality, so last summer we had an ageing defense, crap midfield, but we had the top 2 strikers in PL that year, and ofc SAF really got everything out of that squad in his final season

So that summer transfer was supposed to be one where we had an overhaul of our midfiled and some new CB`s to replace vidic and rio, and then on top of that the club had 20+ years to look for quality replacements for the eventual retirement of both giggs, and scholes, something which they didnt do at all

But we all know we only got 1 signing in fellaini, who barely featured the whole season, so due to that diaster of a window, we where basically set back 2 years in terms of building our squad

You would have thought that this transfer window we would have alot of work to do, but looks like we`ll be keeping deadwood for longer

Also when people complain even though theres still 1 month left, thats the whole problem, all the good players are all gone in the start of the transfer window, now its mainly the players who clubs arent really interested in

IMO spending 150mill would have been proper for this window, with inflation and all, also adding to fact we didnt sign anyone bar fellaini last summer, you would have thought we`d have even more money for this window, on top of that we finished 7th as well

All this shows is that our 7th place finish was no fluke, its more of a true revelation on the quality of our side that was hidden by the genius of SAF

Ive said before if glazers had not taken over, and SAF could have bought the players of his choosing he would have won the CL alot more imo

Was Woodward at the match or away holidaying somewhere? Hopefully he at least bothers to pop up on the deadline day to have a punt at Tiote or something.

It just doesn't make sense, LVG has stated the squad is broken, unbalanced, below top quality, that he needs defenders and a specialist winger. He has just stopped short of saying Spend some fecking money Woodward. The lack of urgency is baffling and it is poor planning and asking for it to go into the season with 5 senior defenders, with 4 of them being injury prone. It was stated by Ed himself that we were working hard on deals about a month ago and he also stated there will be quite a few players exiting with no Champions league football. He hasn't even managed to kick out the deadwood after that for christ sake...

I have always stated we will bring players in before the end of the window and this should speed it up. A bit like how Arsenal brought in Ozil after their home defeat against Villa. Just hope we don't panic buy like that and end up with another striker or a No 10. We do have LVG though and I expect to see a few sensible signings soon enough, so cheer up guys.

won't be long till the scousers start laughing at us again :0(

Nah, pretty safe to say that game isn't a taste of things to come this season for you lot i'm sure and we have our own challenges to consider without looking for egg on our faces.

If you ask me, forget Vidal for now or do maria for that matter...sign de jong, stick him as a cover for the nervy back 3...allow Herrera do his thing and we have something to hold on to till carrick returns or we sign who we really need...its called quick fixing!

I'm referrring to Fletcher. Ander is clearly the attacking part of the duo and having played in the hole last season, is clearly going to take some time to get used to being expected to do fairly good defensive work.

But thats okay, we have Fletcher in the team who's job is to sit deeper, keep the ball and track midfield runners so our CBs arent overloaded from areas they cant reach. He didn't do it. I mean sure Ander needs to help a bit, but Fletcher is the experienced player. He's the vice captain. And he didnt do his job
Fletch is also used to playing in the PL, Ander isn't. He needs to get used to the pace of it. He maybe needed some help and got none.

This will obviously take some time. We need to get our injured players back, we need to strengthen and we need to sort out our defensive game. We are still giving away goals far too easily due to our poor positional play and the lack of protection from our CM. Ki and Shelvey did a good job today, Fletcher and Herrera/Fellaini were found out.

But isn't it nice that we have so many easy games at the start of the season?

While Herrera didn't play great he was the one creating and pressing well and when we made that sub we had the momentum and looked like we would go on and win the game. From Van Gaal's point of view it was a bad decision, but that shows how poor are CM is take off one player and fall to bits.

Herrera will need resting later on or god forgive he gets injured we will be left with Fellaini and Fletcher which is just not good enough, we need quality players in there and to properly fix our midfield we would require Vidal and maybe Khedira as that would mean if Herrera was injured or not fit we wouldn't have to turn to medicore players.

PS I love Fletch but he is not able for this level anymore and people eating into Van Gaal he should be able to take off a CM without us falling to pieces, also didn't help that Mata was poor and Rooney goal a side was also poor. Not even going to start on the defense we just need players not passengers. Was still impressed by Blackett

Everyone probably needs to relax a little. Yes, it's disappointing not winning and not playing very well the first game of the. It's going to take at least half the season for the players to feel comfortable playing in the new system. There are completely different attacking and defending triggers that they will be used to.

You could very well be looking at a situation similar to Liverpool 2 years ago when Rodgers came in. A pretty poor first half of the season while the players become familiar with the new system and the demands of a new manager and coaching staff. The second half of the season will be better and you'll start to see good performances and good results. Will it be enough for a top 4 finish though? Probably not this year.

We would have won that game if we'd not have taken Herrara off the field, he'd started linking up well with Nani, Januzaj & Mata and it seemed crazy to take him off at that stage.

Fletcher & Jones were dreadful for me, Jones is a really poor passer of the ball, god knows why he does it but all his passes seem like dinks into the knee area, players are having to control a knee high ball whilst under challenge.

Fletch was giving the ball away all game, I really don't know why he wasn't taken off.
