Discussion Your Lineup Prediction

  • Need a bit of rotation but hopefully not too much. I think Amorim has worked out who his best 11 is and we’ve seen how reliant our players are on momentum. We really can’t afford a knock back tonight. We can cope with a bit of change as long as we don’t have Eriksen and Casemiro in the middle.

We have 5 subs so we don't need to rest key players (Martinez, De Ligt, Mainoo, Ugarte and Bruno) but we can make changes like for like, Yoro can come in and start instead of Maguire, Dalot is suspended so we will need Malacia to start, and we can afford to have Zirkzee start ahead of Hojlundif we dominate the game properly then we won't need to exert alot of energy and if we score some goals we can have Collyer and Eriksen come into midfield and maybe Garna for Bruno.

    Onana
    Yoro De Ligt Martine
    Maz Mainoo Ugarte Malacia
    Amad Bruno
    Zirkzee

Southampton will try to have a go at us and my worry is that our players will not be ready for it, we must start at 100% vs Southampton

Southampton are last with 6pts total and -32 GD.

I guarantee you that they play like prime Barcelona tonight only to go on and get humped 5-0 on Sunday against Forest.

Hopefully Amorim has us on cup final mode. No point in us putting on big performances against the big boys of the league, only to regress to kind against relegation fodder.

Is there news on fitness of Maguire and Martinez? Ideally I think we’d rest one of them if possible even if they technically are both fully recovered.

Reverse fixture we needed Onana to make a penalty save to jolt some life into us which we scored 2 in 5 minutes but were plodding before and after that until they went down a man and it took us 15 minutes to score another.

Think we get done here 0-1. Team will come in thinking they just gotta show up and it's a win. We'll give up a mind lapse goal in the 1st half and they'll just park the bus

First time in a while I have felt genuinely optimistic of us getting a result. Last time was vs Bournemouth and that was a horror performance :(

This will show if the last 2 results were just us raising our game vs rivals or if we could be genuinely starting to buy in to Ruben's way.

I would like one of the WB to be an attacking option (most likely Amad at RW) but think Mazraoui and Malacia will be picked instead.

Let's hope the lads are motivated to play tonight!!

    Relegation 6 pointer!

I think we win 3-0 and build confidence. We are on the cusp of something here now again with the likes of Rashford cut. The team feels like it's turning a corner. We really really need to keep Ugarte fit though.
Shouldn't you be Southampton supporter tonight, Ali Dia?

    Onana
Yoro - de Ligt - Martinez
    Amad - Ugarte - Mainoo - Maz
    Garnacho - Bruno
    Zirkzee
I'd prefer to rotate a bit more but the drop in quality between the first and second 11 is too big.

7 days coming up with 3 home games where we can try and build on momentum (ignoring for now we have an absolutely awful record against Brighton home and away this past couple of years).

First thing first, tonight really is must win. Preferably comfortably, if not any way it comes!

There's a odd arrogance to think we should be resting players. We're in 14th for a reason.

So thinking resting some players that played between 80-120 minutes just 4 days ago when we only have 2 days off before our next match and then a Europa match 4 days later while in the midst of playing 6 matches in 16 days is an odd arrogance?

    Come off it.

I would not tinker too much so

    Onana

    Yoro DeLigt Martinez

    Maz Ugarte Mainoo Malacia

    Amad Hojlund Bruno

Go strong and then hopefully get into a good position to use the bench early in the second half to give a breather to the likes of Bruno and Ugarte. I know there is a lot of pressure to drop Hojlund but after he slogged through two of our toughest fixtures I think he should get the chance to start in what should be an easier game as he was rotated out the last time we had an easy PL fixture when he could have used the confidence boost. Would also be nice to see Kukonki get a few minutes in this one if it is looking comfortable.

jesus...if we can't win this game we may just be fecked for the season and floating around that relegation line

If we play 2 defensive wingbacks and perform poorly then Amorim will get a lot of stick. We should be going full out attacking for this game. Can understand against the last 2 opponents. I’d put Amad or Antony at RWB.

I'm not getting carried away after the last two results but unless this is another 9-0 then Ruben should go.

i just want us to win. Southampton are in a dogfight. If you look at their away results they have never been hammered. At home they attck more and are vulnerable. Let's just win

As many have said, this is the most interesting game for me. We have had time for the system to be at least partially in place, we don't have many injuries, we are playing a team who are looking like they might take on that awful Derby team for lowest points total in the league. It is a must win.

Lots of talk of best xi and rotation being a sign of complacency, but fittest xi for purpose has to be a serious consideration. Playing supposedly better/best players who aren't recovered enough to be out there runs an increased risk of injury, especially so if people are expecting them to go from the week they've just had to a seemingly tougher game in Brighton straight after this one.

Fitness levels are important and it may well be prudent to have key players who have worked hard these last few games on the bench rather than starting.

There's the argument that you start with your strongest players, get the game wrapped up ASAP and then get them off the pitch, but it's almost a certainty Southampton will run their hardest most aggressive minutes in the first 60min of the game. Those are harder minutes to play than the latter portion of the game unless we've really messed up and are chasing the game at the aforementioned juncture.

Hoping to see a balanced and fit xi out there. Those players also need to stand up and be counted, regardless. Southampton are bad-bad; if we can't rotate and rest against them, when can we?

This is a possibility that won't surprise me, and that's why, to win this, Amorim must force these players to come out of the gate guns blazing, go at them from the get go, otherwise, it's gonna be a long night.

    Onana
    Maz
    Evans
    Yoro
    Martinez
    Malacia
    Ugarte
    Mainoo
    Amad
    Fernandes
    Zirkzee
Evans, Lindelof, Shaw and Mount are still injured.

Shaw should be back before the end of January. Mount longer than that. No clue about Lindelof and Evans.

Yeah this is what I think will happen also. Maybe Amad where Mazraoui is and Garnacho in? Doubt it though.

I'd like to see Zirkzee start tonight. Play Amad and Garnacho behind him. Given it's Southampton, I think we can be comfortable playing Bruno in the midfield two.
Yes, but in that case we're back to playing two defenders at the wingbacks. I don't think it gives us enough threat.

I'd do one of Amad/Garnacho at wing back (Maz on the other wing), the other in AM with Bruno, and Mainoo/Ugarte in CM.

Sorry if the wrong forum but taking my American friend to his first OT visit tonight. It’s been a few years since I’ve been and just wondering if anyone knows when gates will open? Also is it true pints are £3??????

Where are your ticks? Only draft pints in lower Stretty, £3.80.

But it's £3.80 bottles all over the ground. Bizarrely cheap, was a weird concession during the COVID protests that they agreed to.

Think turnstiles open two hours pre KO
