I don't know where to start but here goes Di Maria and Herrera are not similar in fact I'd say they compliment each other well. You talk about the need for a playmaker but that's not always needed (think Keane Ince and there's many more like this) We now have one of Carrick or Blind as a 6 and both them are hardly poor on the ball. Once we get the proper movement and patterns of play we will be a delight to watch with the quality we now have.
You say Kagawa had a good game and I won't argue but I think LVG was meaning Kagawa was picking the wrong pass and therefore this disrupts the pattern of play. I'm disappointed that LVG has not impressed you but I'd say give it time as he's only been here 10mins and most of his signings are yet to take the field or play together. Rojo Shaw Herrera Falcao Blind and even Di Maria has only had 60 mins. Plus we are only going to improve further by the players playing with each other and learning each others strengths and weaknesses.
You mean the old era when the whole league had no clue about such player and basically played with thugs which often left their midfield open and made it easy for our team, even when we deployed an archaic 4-4-2 tactic? There's also a reason City tends to fail in europe despite their impressive squad because they either don't have a player to set their tempo against top teams or deploy Silva well enough to do that for them.
As a matter of fact, Silva should be playing in the central role for City and not on the wing because it was in the central role he had a fantastic 1st half debut season until he was moved to the wing in the 2nd half and this led to the drop in his performance. I also remembered him outclassing the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and co in City 2-0 loss to Barca. Silva was the best player in that match and he did that from a central role! Infact, that was City's best performance in europe, eventhough they lost the match due to their poor finish.
I would even say the reason behind City winning the league twice now is because they had Silva who still made efforts to drop deep from the wing to dictate their tempo, even when he isn't given the liberty to do such. It isn't a coincidence we won the league from them the moment our ginger man- Scholes returned to the team! That should at least give us a reality check!
Like I said earlier, Herrera and Di Maria are similar player in the midfield. They don't control games but provide fantastic energy with their forward drives and can also add a bit of creativity. it's no use trying to change them because it will only create a problem trying to change their style, which it's already a problem with Herrera because the only time he was at his best was when he had a free reign in the Galaxy game and yeah, Kagawa controlled that game. Infact, Kagawa was one of our best players in the 2nd half of that game when many subs were rung in.
Another is the Roma game where the team failed to control the midfield in the 1st half with the likes of Herrera, Mata, Fletcher having terrible performances. It wasn't a coincidence the team controlled the midfield better the moment Kagawa came on the pitch in the 2nd half, even Van Gaal said the team's passing was better in the 2nd half. Infact after Rooney, Kagawa was our best player in that game and that was because Rooney had a goal and an assist. So Van Gaal coming up with Kagawa doesn't want to fulfil my philosophy is basically bullshit to me.
If I go with what my gut tells me, I would probably doubt him the more but to allow peace to reign, I will just say maybe Van Gaal thought the subs made in the 2nd half were all rubbish due to the team difficulty in scoring goals but the truth is, the 2nd half team hardly played with strikers nor quality ones which was quite glaring against Inter and Madrid.
Back on topic, we're in a new era where playmaking midfielders are required. This season, Chelsea has one in Fabregas, Pool has a makeshift one in Gerrard and a decent one in Allen, City and Arsenal have one in Silva and Carzola respectively, eventhough they don't deploy them well enough to take charge but at least they have such players whereas we have none!

    This and nothing else please!

We have to play 4 at the back, just please do it.

4-3-3 is his preferred formation anyway isn't it?
But we didn't have players to carry it off in he way he would like.

We do now surely? Diamond formation in the midfield - just get it done!

How can our strongest XI have Wayne Rooney playing in the number 10 position when we have 2 or 3 better options in that role, one of them not even in that team - Mata.

You say keeping possession is the aim yet Rooney has a poor first touch and often loses the ball, especially in compassion to Mata.

Rooney is our captain, he will be preferred over Mata should we only have space for one of them. Neither of them have been great for a while to be honest. Rooney will definitely have to step it up but hopefully with better and more mobile players around him now he can do so. What I'd love to see from us is urgency as well which I think Mata lacks a bit.

But I agree that is a problematic position mainly because we have quite a few out-of-form players in the team and a few who are only just starting for us. Which is why van Gaal was asking for time, which unfortunately being behind so much we dont have much of so it's imperative he picks the right guys for us and finds the right formationf for them.

    De Gea

    Rafael - Evans - Rojo - Shaw

    Blind - Herrera

Januzaj - Mata - Di Maria

    Falcao

    Make it so!

The team I want to see is different from the team I think LvG will go with. I'd like to see something like this:
    de Gea
Rafael- Evans - Rojo - Shaw
    Blind - Herrera
    Januzaj - Rooney - DiMaria
    RvP

But I think he will go with:
    de Gea
    Valencia - Evans - Rojo - Blackett - Shaw
Herrera - Blind - Di Maria
    Rooney - RvP
I think it's probably important for LvG to get a win or two under our belts in this formation before changing it because the players might doubt it in the future otherwise.

    De Gea

    Rafael - Evans - Rojo - Shaw

    Herrera -Blind - Di Maria

    Rooney

    Falcao RVP
Don't see why he won't give all the superstars a chance to see if they can make this work, then if It is not working due perhaps to Rooneys touch having a bad day (bring Mata in) or lacking width (bring Januzai on for Herrera)

Want to see a diamond with blind, herrera di maria and mata with two of RVP/Falcao/Rooney. But I expect Mata will be dropped to play all of them. Don't think it will be anywhere near as effective as it could be.

    De Gea
    Rafael Evans Rojo Shaw
    Januzaj/Mata Herrera Blind Di Maria
    Rooney Falcao
Is what I want but Rafa and Shaw has been out long so I'd expect to see
    De Gea
    Evans Blackett Rojo
    Valencia Herrera Blind Di Maria
    Januzaj/Mata
    RVP Rooney
My team Will win, LVG's will draw:-P

If we were to play 4-3-3(which I doubt) then for me it would probably be:

    De Gea
    Rafael Evans Rojo Shaw
    Blind
    Herrera Di Maria
    Mata
    Rooney Van Persie

Subs: Falcao, Januzaj, Fletcher, Valencia, Blackett, Lindegaard.

I don't know why so many want to see Rooney as number 10 behind 2 strikers, that will be horrible and will only work on paper (and it's not like he is in good form either). I hope we playing the diamond, but with Mata/Di Maria/Januzaj in that role, not Rooney. He is one of the reasons why we are playing with 2 strikers, so give him a striker spot if you want him to play, otherwise you can also drop him and play 4-3-3 with wingers or like I mentioned with a real playmaker/midfielder behind our strikers.

I strongly agree I like that formation but Mata has to be the number 10, especially with the pace of Di Maria and Adnan passing him he will have a field day supplying them. Although that leaves Rooney RVP and Falcao to go in the one position :/

feck this 532 crap. our squad is made for a back 4 and with injuries even more so
    de Gea
    Rafael Evans Rojo Shaw
    Blind Herrera
    Rooney
    di Maria Falcao Januzaj
with injuries and balance in mind i think this should be the starting line up. mata rvp and fletcher as subs

van gaal will probaly put blind at cb, di maria in cm, mata at #10 with rooney and falcao up top and januzaj on the bench for his 532

Its been a long time since I was this excited and hyped for a game.

I'm so excited to see the new lads in action let's be honest we couldn't pick a better game to get their debuts.

I want this to be the start of the new era under van gaal and I have a feeling it will be.

I'm excited about tomorrow's match. It's really the time for us to start showing some good football and getting a win. Multiple new signings, few players leaving and it's the time for those who earned LVG's trust to show up.

I agree, these weeks off and the two weeks prior have been excruciating.

Ok, so Costa got a hatrick today, so for fantasy footy purposes, can Falcao either smash loads, or not play at all (vice captain Costa) :)

Don't hold your breath. Falcao will certainly start, just as Di Maria went straight in.

I'll be pleased to see him start. I'm intending to get into fanboy mode with a Falcao 9 shirt.
I conducted my own poll on facebook to make sure it's acceptable behaviour for a man of my age

As long as you never wear it outside sport related events, you're safe! Except if you go full kit, that should be banned.

I would go for this as well if I was manager. I dotn get why people keep saying "Why Rooney as the number 10, it has to be Mata". Rooneys touch has been poor, but people talkign about possesion football blah blah blah. I actyually think floatin garound Rooney will get reasonable time and space.
Mata has been nothing but average for us so far and I hear people, including Gary Neville saying that is partly as he doesnt have pace around him, well the only added pace he really has in this new side is in Di Maria behind him and personalyl I think Mata has been very poor so far, in fact awful in the last game and should start from the bench.
I have always thought (bar one season, admittedly his best) that Rooney is at his best floating around behind a striker or strikers. He might not have the burst of pace he used to, and his touch has been poor but I actually think his style of play will benefit more with DiMaria behind him and Falcao in front more than the style of play of Mata would

Feck me that was a long read, ill just agree to disagree.

Haven't been up since the Bayern game last season, so it's going to be weird to arrive, and see Falcao, Di Maria, Rojo, Blind, Shaw and Herrera in the squad!

Not to mention Cleverley, Kagawa, Welbeck, Ferdinand, Vidic, Giggs, Nani and Hernandez all gone!

Still haven't got over such a monumental turn over!

Anyone feel like sleeping today off (if you can) , so you can get on with tomorrow? Can't wait!
Funnily enough I was! Problem now is I feel like I've got my hopes uncontrollably high for this game, so there is only one way they can go from here

Hope to God we win tomorrow, then we're just 1 point behind both Liverpool and Arsenal despite playing some of the worst football since the 80s.

Well my expectation is a win. Not a storming win. Just enough to show improvement. Beyond that would be a bonus!

After all this excitement it'll be typical of us to go 1-0 down then spend the rest of the game fighting for a point. Hopefully we switch formations and play some exciting football. Please.

I think it will be 5 at the back with Valencia starting again. I really really hope this isn't the case but I can't shake the feeling the 5 3 2 is here for another while at least. I personally don't think it's an attacking enough formation to use against teams we should be beating easily at home. 4-3-3 diamond all the way!!

    I'd be delighted to see

    DDG
    Rafael Evans Rojo Shaw
    Blind
    Herrera Di Maria
    Mata/Adnan
    Falcao Rooney/RVP

    Sexy time....

On paper there are a lot of goals in that team.

That's my realistic expectation, but I can't help but get caught up in the post-window-signing excitement!
