Regarding VDB, if you do want him to do better this season then I'm not sure throwing him in against Leeds with a half-formed and half-fit squad around him is the best way to start. It makes sense to me that Solskjaer would go with what he knows to begin the season, much though I dislike that midfield pairing.

We have games against Southampton, Wolves and Newcastle that will be less physically intense. If you want to try VDB in CM, better there.
Seems like they'll always be a mitigating circumstance that requires him being left out, looking like a terrible signing from Ole

Pogba on left and James on right feels underwhelming. It might be a tough watch

I don't think he'll make any difference in that regard. We don't have a #6 at the club aside from Matic and he won't be trusted to play the lone holding role, Varane or no Varane.

    It's going to be 4-2-3-1.
Ole said about changing up the team when varane comes in and varane will allow us to push higher up the pitch + become more solid at the back

Strange… Mctominay and Fred have barely featured in pre season. I presumed this was the logic behind benching Sancho. Guess not…
Fred went to the final of the Copa America, starting all but one of Brazil's games. In the one pre-season half he did have he looked quite good after a rough first 10 minutes.

McTominay is a bit more surprising, but it is Leeds so I can understand Ole being nervous about how any of Matic, Pogba or VDB would handle their pressure and workrate.

Are the chants just exclusive to local fans then?

The atmosphere is much better when it's more local fans. Fergie used to say the same too. Nothing against the tourist, they're really important to the club and have just as much right to enjoy supporting United and enjoying the games.

But a nice couple from China/India/USA doesn't do much for the atmosphere in comparison to local lads who've had a few pints and will sing and shout the whole game.

Especially in a game like this, the local fans hate leeds. And leeds away fans will be loud so need to drown them out.

Could be that too, we'll have to see.

Either way, him not starting today shouldn't be a surprise.

Ole loves them both. They won't be going anywhere while he's the manager.
Mctominay and Fred are the only midfielders in our squad that have shown they can play that position with any sort of consistency, unfortunately. If we had better options, they would obviously play.

so apparently, 2 years and 9 months after becoming Utd manager, this is the season where you can finally judge Solskjaer.

We cant go out like Arsenal. Straight pressure for Ole if we dont win this at home.

One thing I want to see us us not being shite at defending set pieces this season.

Need to cut that out from game 1

First game of the season, loads of player lacking fitness and proper pre-season. Too soon to call at the moment!
If we are not playing 433 at home vs Leeds (with all due respect to Leeds) then i doubt that we will play it often this season.
Double pivot will be our midfield. With new midfielder or not

Now you all remember not to analyze every kick and every pass. We are interested in the performance as a hole and the result.

    Don't be giving yourselves ulcers

Daniel James gets far too many starts for a player who is at most a benchwarmer. But it is what it is.

As far as I’m aware, we haven’t signed any new midfielders, so why the outrage/confusion over our first choice midfield from last year starting?

Daniel James gets far too many starts for a player who is at most a benchwarmer. But it is what it is.
To be fair, for a club of our size, and for the money spent in recent years, half the current squad shouldnt be more than benchwarmers in reality.

I will suspend anyone who analyses every kick, instead of the performance as a whole.

Don't you dare laugh at my newbie status.
