Think we need to completely rotate those who didn't have a good game and let Amorim see their performances where possible so I'd go with:

    Onana
    Mazraoui Yoro Shaw
    Amad Ugarte Mainoo Antony
    Mount Zirkzee
    Hojlund

Really hope we don't go with that. Far too many players there who are just returning from injury / struggled for form or minutes this season, all featuring at once - Yoro, Shaw, Mainoo, Antony, Mount, Zirkzee, Hojlund.

It would be handy if most of those got some minutes over the course of the match, but starting them all would be treating an important, must win (in terms of top 8) game more like a behind closed doors friendly that's set up mostly just to get minutes into non-match fit players legs.

Fine for 2 or 3 of those to start, but they need to be in mostly around regular starters. The rest could mostly feature as subs as the game progresses.

    Onana
    Yoro--MDL--Shaw
    Mazraoui--Ugarte--Mainoo--Malacia
    Amad--Mount
    Hojlund
I would love this. Genuinely think it's our strongest team. I know Bruno has his qualities but he doesn't half hurt the team dynamic if he's not on his game.

Essential to use all these euro and cup games to try implement new system. Im prepared to stomach some bad results this year, as Amorim says to take the 'risk' needed to go straight to playing his way

Based on Amorim's comments in the post-match press conference, I would expect a lot of rotation.

Yes, I heard this. One set of players play, the others train more. Not sure if he is suggesting we will essentially have two starting 10's (presume Onana will always start) for the next few weeks with subs coming in and out during the games.

    Team B trains more

Hojlund should get a start here - I might be wrong, but I think we saw more runs into the channels etc yesterday than the rest of the season under ETH.

This sounds workable and practical. I hope that the results go our way so Amorim does not come under pressure to cave.

I think a lot of changes are inevitable. He's figuring out which players are stylistically the best fit for his formation and how good they in general. Wouldn't surprise me if more or less every senior player has a start by the time of the Everton game.

That said, where he sees someone doing well, he might consider that spot settled and simply keep the person in place. He seemed to be pleased with Amad for instance, so maybe he'll continue for a couple of games.

My guess for this game would be

    Onana
    Yoro-De Ligt-Shaw
    Amad-Ugarte-Mainoo-Malacia
    Zikzee-Mount
    Hoijland
But if someone gets the lineup prediction right, they should just close the competition, the line up could hardly be any harder to predict.

Really hope we see minutes for Shaw, Malacia, Mount and Yoro.

Would be massive for the new manager to get them back as realistic options for the first team squad asap.

I don't hate this lineup. As good as he's been, Mazraoui needs a break. I figure we'll see Shaw or Martinez at LCB, ideally Shaw as he needs to get some fitness. I don't recall what type of player Malacia is so no idea if he is any good at attacking but he also needs minutes if we're going to count on him anytime soon.

My only change would be to ship Zikzee back to where he came from. Start Amad there and play Dalot as RWB.

Useful game for getting important players back up to fitness.

    Onana
Yoro - De Ligt - Shaw
    Mazraoui - Ugarte - Mainoo - Antony
    Amad - Mount
    Hojlund

Given it’s a new format, are there any guesses as to what points total would be likely to achieve top 8, and what to achieve top 24. Am I right in thinking it doesn’t matter if you finish 9th or 24th, or anywhere in between?

Heard it's projected to be 15 for top 8, so looking at 3 wins from 4 games needed

    Who captains your team?
Its an annoying question but everyone being here 5 minutes makes it difficult to answer.

No idea what Amorim will do so can just say my preference. I'd probably go for more or less the same team as Ipswich with one or two changes. Keep the parts that worked - Mazraoui and Amad. Thought we were better after Ugarte and Shaw came on, so keep them. Wouldn't be attached to anyone else and would drop Rashford. I'd just want to get a bit of consistency in selection so wouldn't make wholesale changes. Think just changing them 3 (Ugarte, Shaw and Rashford) would do me. Swap it up a bit more in the second half.

A little bit like a mini pre season really.
    Quite a smart move.
Expect lots of inconsistency in performance before Christmas

I think we’ll see something like:

    Onana

    Yoro
    Lindelof
    Shaw

    Antony (RWB)
    Ugarte
    Mainoo
    Malacia (LWB)

    Mount
    Zirkzee

    Hojlund

Amorim will know that United will probably need to win this game to stand a chance of finishing in the top 8 in the group. With that in mind some rotation will done but not a lot.

Bodo-glimt have done fairly well in the Europa League this season.

2-1 away win v Braga, 3-2 home win v Porto and they had 10 men for 40 minutes in that game. 0-0 away v Union Saint Gilloise and 2-1 home defeat v Qarabag in a match they had 23 shots in.

The models project you need 15 points to be likely top 8 and 10 points to be likely top 24.

It still matters somewhat where you finish 9-24. The games are seeded, so they're going to try to match up #9 with #24 in the next round. Further, if you advance to the quarter finals they'll again try to matchup the highest remaining seeds with the lowest remaining seeds. So as #9 you'll likely play #8 in the quarter finals.

Another advantage is #9-16 get the second leg at home in the knockout round, while #17-24 get the first leg at home.

Think I’ll wait for the presser before picking a line-up. See if any recovering players are anywhere near starting this, e.g. Yoro, Maguire, Martinez, Mainoo. I do think he will try to get minutes in for Mount & Shaw

feck it, I'll have a guess...

    Onana
    Mazaroui De Ligt Shaw
    Antony Ugarte Mainoo Dalot
    Amad Bruno
    Hoijlund
Yoro and Malacia to come on in the second half, slowly ease them in from their injuries.

    Thanks man, well explained!

I'm sure there'll be some posters who come out with the usual "give kids / squad players a go as it's only the EL. Save the key first teamers for the weekend league game".

Completely disagree with that thinking in general anyway. But especially so in the current situation. Short term - we're in a must win situation with all remaining EL matches if we're to finish top 8, so can't afford any dropped points here. And long term - it's important the key players start to feel settled into the new formation and game plan and what's being asked of them individually and as a team. So the more matches the key personnel play together over this upcoming period the better.

I'm not going to predict an actual line up as I'm not sure where the returning players are at as regards being ready for starts. But just hope we go with the same kind of line up as he'll be picking for the league games, and not treat this match any differently or give it any less significance
I say old chum, this is very much an all hands on deck situation yes, particularly given how few points we have gathered in the EL.

Not to mention that they trounced Jose's Roma in the Conference League a couple of seasons back, twice. They're a dangerous adversary - skilled, fast, attack-oriented. Brighton of the North.

    Onana
    Yoro, Evans Shaw.
    Dalot Mainoo Ugarte Garnacho
    Amad Mount

Think it'll be a mix. Few changes per game - those more up to speed/ understand the system, stay in the team.

Hope so anyway, surely won't stick with that Evans, Casemiro, Eriksen core.

    Mount
    Zirkzee

    Hojlund
I doubt Zirkzee starts. He criticised him last game for not getting in the box when we need a goal so there’s no one to cross it to.

Another game where I haven't the slightest clue what the starting XI is gonna be!

If everyone was fit and available, I think the strongest line up in a 3-4-3 is as below:

    Onana

    Yoro
    MDL
    Martinez

    Maz
    Ugarte
    Mainoo
    Shaw

    Amad
    Bruno

    Hojlund

I'd drop Dalot, he's been rubbish this season and he's not going to do anything at LWB.

Conventional wisdom is that Shaw wouldn't be able to physically cope playing at LWB but I'd like to see it for myself before making a judgement, because the position is made for a fully fit Shaw (admittedly a rare sighting).

I'm sorry, Amad is wasted at RWB. If our front 3 were firing on all cylinders and scoring goals for fun, then it wouldn't be that big an issue. But at the moment he's our best attacker, we need him as close to the goal as possible! Mazraoui can play there if Yoro comes in RCB.

Can't find a place for Garnacho in the starting line up with this formation. He's still better as an impact player off the bench, but now he'd be coming on as a 10 rather than a winger, so is even his impact off the bench going to suffer?

Hojlund starts ahead of Rashford, simply because he's the better of two bad options. Badly need a quality centre forward, it's killing us.

Would like to see him try this line up and see how it goes!

Getting a feeling we'll see Antony tried out in that wing back spot for this.

    Amorim's first real test.

If we dont win this one then there could be a bit of concern already.
