We can't afford losing and be kicked out of the cup at least for now, it's maybe our best chance to win something this season, and I reckon Jose knows that too so I would say just rest Matic from the team who played today and play every one else with Lukaku back for this too. Our next league game after 10 days from this one so good rest will come anyway.

    Romero
    Lindelof--Smalling--Jones--Blind
    McTominay--Herrera--Pogba
    Mkhitaryan--Rashford--Martial

I have a soft spot for Derby just because I live here - will be an interesting one...

Couldn't a more attacking 4-3-3 work, in some easier games, with Lingard in the midfield right instead of Herrera? That would open up space for Rashford upfront.
This would fit our best players right now, keep Pogba on the midfield left of a 4-3-3, and still be a fitting offensive formation to face a Championship team at home:

    Matić
    Lingard_____Pogba
    Mata_____________Martial
    Lukaku

I checked all our games match report's on Whoscored and you know how many times did we “favoured short passing”? Only twice, last game and Huddersfield away (which we lost in 4-2-3-1 without Pogba). No wonder Mkhitaryan is a flop here!

Maybe Mourinho discovered something by mistake in the Everton game, just because we were lacking both Lukaku and Ibrahimović, but we just shouldn't go back to the dire spectacle of long balls and crosses.

I don't think it's only due to Pogba's position, more with the interchanging of positions short passing allows. Of course, having an extra midfielder to slowly build play does help. But the real test is going to be when we go back to 4-2-3-1 with Lukaku.

Only chance at a trophy this season IMO.

    Romero
    Tuanzebe Lindelof Jones Blind
    Herrera McTominay
    Mata Mkhitaryan Rashford
    Martial
Probably something like this. Rotate some like Pogba, matic, lingard, some have to play because of a lack of options.

The game isn't going to be televised right ? How are we going to watch it then ? :D

    Plenty of channels.

We've a 10-day gap between games after this (8 if it goes to a replay) so no need to rest too many, but also a nice opportunity to give likes of McTominay and Tuanzebe a start.

    Romero

    Tuanzebe
    Lindelof
    Rojo
    Shaw

    McTominay
    Herrera

    Mkhitaryan
    Pogba
    Lingard

    Rashford

I dont give a feck about the FA cup, it is a meaningless trophy if we miss top 4 or injure an important player needed for the long run. We should rest every regular player and squad player and play totally with the players that don't get playtime at all. Romero, Blind, Darmian, McTominay, Tuanzebe, from the first team, and fill the rest positions with youth players. It is important for the players to get a good rest of 10 days at least it is going to feel for them as a winter break.

I want us to win every trophy, purely so we can say we are the best in every competition. Arsenal have overtaken us in FA Cups, whilst Liverpool have us on League Cups and European Cups. I hope we can eventually knock those teams off their perch in those competitions as well, so we need to start by trying our best to win this. I think we will still finish in the top four, so this is our best chance at a trophy and we need to go for it.

    de Gea
    Tuanzebe Smalling Rojo Shaw
    McTominay
    Herrera Pogba
    Mkhitaryan Martial Lingard

Something similar to this hopefully, though by all means don't rest Matic from the start, play someone else over Mkhitaryan, keep Lindelef and/or Jones.

Should be another 4-3-3 to test the system.

I assume Lindelöf is going to keep play as right back until Young is back from suspension. It would just cause confusion if Mourinho moved around the right back at this point.

I'd rest Jones because he's injury prone. Let Rojo and Tuanzebe play as center backs. I'd prioritize Smalling over Tuanzebe though if Smalling is back from injury simply because you want Smalling back for the Stoke match.

In midfield i'd play Pogba so that he quickly gets into the more offensive positioning of the new system. McTominay might fill in for Matic, but Matic could play because he's getting 10 days rest after the Derby game (assuming win or loss as a result). This is an important match for Man Utd so I still think it's pretty likely that Matic gets to start although he's definitely looking fatigued lately. McTominay wasn't very good against Bristol and I wouldn't trust him from start in a match like this.

In attack I wouldn't change anything because none of those players are showing signs of fatigue and they were all good against Everton.

    Romero
    Lindelöf - Smalling* - Rojo - Shaw
    Matic* - Pogba - Herrera
    Mata* - Martial - Lingard

This is the perfect opportunity to ppay Pogba on the left. See how it works out.

    De Gea
    Darmian Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Matic Herrera
    Mata Lingard Pogba
    Martial

    Let’s do it.

Just realised we have no game two weekends in a row (i.e Saturday & Sunday).

    Which is a bit naff.

Seriously, why in the name of feck is this on a Friday? Absolutely no need.

Look, people were raving yesterday's 4-3-3 because it allowed Pogba to drift to the left, like he used to in Juventus. Herrera's on the right.

    Let’s do it.
That would be a 4-3-3 with Pogba still in midfield, not a 4-2-3-1.

This is the pattern to emulate:

Looking at it closely, though, Herrera seemed at least as influent as Pogba.

Both Pogba and Herrera play significantly better in a three-man midfield, so we should be trying to do it more. Especially when Mkhitaryan is in poor form and we have two strikers injured. There's less feeling of trying to 'force' us into playing a no.10 and three forwards.

Yeah, screw the FA cup, just a chance to win a trophy, nothing more.

That defence is crap, we need to win this game and we don't play until another 10 days.

We don't have the CB cover right now to risk Jones and Rojo IMO, time to give Axel a chance. If that attack can't kill off Derby at Old Trafford then we have big problems, we should be dominating them to a point that we shouldn't be worrying about the back 4.

Smalling is back, was on the bench last night. Darmian is never a good idea.

This is on eir sport 2 for those of us in Ireland for some reason

No idea how they managed to get the right to that

why the feck are we playing on friday night? only just noticed this... utter garbage given it isn't for TV - other to show that we'll get a bigger crowd than that Merseyside derby crap

I’m pretty certain Lukaku will be back for this, he is only out for a week!

I did, however like our rotating front 3 against Everton and would start them for this match too.

No real need to rotate too much.
We're fairly short on numbers anyway, and the next home is over a week afterwards, and is Stoke at home.
