They are going to come at us like Spain did against Holland in the WC. There at home and desperate. Perfect for LvG.

Does anyone feel the press are getting way ahead of themselves with these front pages?

Seems like they're setting us up for a fall if we don't win on Sunday.

Realistically when you look at it, we've had our worst start to a prem season ever, we haven't won an away game yet and City away is one of the hardest games we'll play this season.
City are almost everyone's bet as the only team in with a chance of challenging Chelsea for the title, yet if we win this game, we are just a point behind them, after an indifferent start to the season for us, with lots of new players who are settling in to a new team/country/league etc. That has to be motivation for our players who I think will definitely be up for this game and full of confidence.

I also quite like how the majority of the articles/opinion pieces I've read seem to be writing us off. I quite enjoy when we're written off as I feel we tend to respond. I'm quietly confident going into this game. I haven't read that Barney Ronay article yet but suggesting we are becoming the new noisy neighbours seems a bit hasty. We won the league the season before last. Anyone would think that we haven't challenged for years and years.
He is saying he's being slightly mischievous, to be fair.

Let's hope there is a similar outcome to that game. Not sure our defence can hang on though.

The war at the mid is the key point, I believe we can at least score a goal tomorrow.
and hopefully the goal is enough to make us grab three or one point.
I would go for this, or maybe Januzaj instead of Herrera with a more attacking formation

Good time to play imho were running into a little form they are struggling a little. If we score first we will get some sort of a result we held Chelsea we can do the same to City not bothered if it's at the the eithad.

Hard to be too optimistic given how miserable we've been in recent times in this fixture. I was heartened by LvG's presser though - every question was an attempt to whip the fixture up, but he was having none of it, just looking to take the sting out of it, treating it like another game and taking a cold, tactical view of things.

I can't find that WUM who was moaning about Fellaini anywhere in this thread, Has he been banned and his posts deleted?
Banned for what? Saying that Fellaini is not United quality. Joker. Why don't you come over to Red Issue for a proper chat. :smirk:

I always thought as a fan, you are obliged to praise the player who had a great performance for your team, and hope he replicate the form going forward. Giving stick to a player that had a good game is usually done by rival fans?
Er, yes, if I believed he had a great game. But I don't.

I don't really like the Afroman but watching that clip emphasises the point that he was class - cool and calm under pressure and put key tackles in. Don't know what you're on about.
I guess I set the bar higher when it comes to what I expect from a Manchester United midfielder.

I don't like the word bully but you have just posted a video of Fellaini dispossessing the best midfield in the league about 7 times, added onto that some brilliant hold up play and of course the header leading to our goal. I'm not his biggest fan but it was a very good performance and I can see where the "bully" statements come from!
He played okay. I'm not going to get carried away by that performance.

Absolutely hate posts like this. How is this the worst possible time to play City? They are missing their second best player in Silva, they have been out of sorts all season, especially this last week and Toure looks like he doesn't give a feck.

Not having a go at you personally, but a lot of you need to have the balls to be optimistic and expect a win and then deal with the disappointment afterwards if we lose.

Instead too many posters expect us to get thrashed and then if we do,start the endless moaning for the next week.It almost as if some of you want us to lose so you can have a good moan.

Absolutely! I don't understand why some fans now have this 'loser' mentality. We are United ffs. Although we no longer have Sir Alex, we are gradually building up a team and the players must never lose confidence, against ANY team

Time to go for the throat. Can't envisage us keeping a clean sheet but the same can be said of city. If we can whether the early storm I really fancy us to get our noses in front. I'm going for 2-1 utd

If we beat City I might just run up some credit card debt buying everyone in the pub I see a free drink of their choosing.

After last season and Liverpool's cockiness about being "back on their perch", them losing to Newcastle and us beating City would just be magnetic. Unlikely to happen, very, very unlikely to happen, but imagine.

I think people are reading to much into the bad form City are having at the moment. This is a derby and they have quality players. The bad spell they are having won't count tomorrow and I believe that is exactly what LvG is telling the team ahead of the game. Everyone is going to be totally motivated and they won't play as bad as they did against the other teams, unless we are forcing them to.

There is somehow an advantage for us that Silva is missing the game, but to say that they couldn't trouble our defence without him would be arrogant. We need to be at least close to the performance we delivered against Chelsea and take our chances to win the game at the Etihad. I feel confident, because I thought that LvG set us up brilliantly against Chelsea and I haven't seen us playing good football and creating chances like that against the top teams for a while now. We have the ability to win that game, no doubt about that, but we should concentrate much more on our performance, than saying 'City aren't in good form, their defence isn't stable and they are missing Silva'. That would be the wrong approach to the game and I can't see us winning, if the players are thinking like that.

We have the chance to kick start our season with a good performance and a win tomorrow. It would give everyone a massive boost and certainly would send a signal to other teams in the league. Didn't thought I would say that, but I'm really happy that Rooney is back. Even though he is technically not the most gifted player, he has that kind of presence, will and determination we need against City, especially away from home.

    ==Herera====Fellaini==
    ==Rooney RVP Di Maria=

I feel that 433 will combat their game through the middle. I'm just not sure about Herera and Fellaini on the same team.
Three days on I'm still sticking with my original choice with the aim of combatting City's midfield (in light of our vulnerable back four). The only difference I could see happening with LVG's line up is Herera making way for either Mata or Januzaj. If Mata comes in we'd have to play a diamond with Di Maria on the left of it and Mata at the spear. I just think the above gives us more mobility and adaptability in the middle of the park depending upon whether or not we have the ball.

Wouldn't surprise me if Di Maria played on the right, putting him against Clichy rather than Zabaleta. I reckon he'd get more joy, and if he cuts inside he'll potentially be running at Mangala which could be fun.

At some point we are going to have to admit that Southampton are a genuine threat to our top 4 expectations. I know a mid table team always punches above their weight early in the season, but our upcoming match with them could be a bigger game than this one against City.

Sadly, Newcastle also gained 3 more points today, too.

Overwhelm Toure. We need bodies in the middle. Di Maria will give us what we need pushing forward. Both teams will concede, so with Silva out we only have to frustrate Toure. Starve Aguero and make sure if they do score, it's a moment of class. I would have Fellaini, Blind, Herrera and di Maria in the middle, Rooney and RVP up top.

Their midfield can be got at, I am not convinced with Fernando, Fernandinho or Toure at the minute. We need Di Maria running at their defence. Play him as the AM!

I've changed my mind about the team.

    Degea
    Rafa
    Smalling
    Rojo
    Shaw

    Blind

    Herrera
    Fellani
    Rooney

    Di maria
    Van Persie

442 diamond with di maria playing the role robben played in the World Cup. And rooney playing in the number 10 role.

Good solid, balanched lineup. I think we can get a result if the players perform like against chelsea

I would like us to start with the following team:

    -------------------ddg---------------
    rafael----smalling--rojo-----shaw---
    ------fellaini-----blind-------------
    -------------herrera---------------
    --rooney----------------dimaria--
    -------------RVP-----------------
With Rooney and Herrera swapping roles.
It is very important for the likes of Rooney and Di Maria to make runs past RvP. RvP will not be able to play as the striker who troubles the last line of defense. the role he should be given is to hold the ball up and bring others into play. RvP should also make some runs out wide to allow herrera and rooney to make runs in the box.
Rooney will have to be ready to make runs into the box to support RvP as Di Maria loves putting crosses in.
We absolutely have to score 2 goals to get anything out of this game. Aguero is going to have one or two moments in our box. I hope he does not convert those moments to goals.

I'm going back to the diamond we were briefly playing before Herrera got injured with my prediction:

    de Gea
    Rafael Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Fellaini Blind
    Herrera Rooney di Maria
    RVP
Possibly Januzaj instead of Herrera. If Herrera does play I'd give him a fairly free role and freedom to interchange with Rooney.

I think the key for this match is going to be somehow keeping Silva, Yaya and Aguero quiet. Silva has been fantastic this past few weeks and Aguero and Toure always seem to score against us.

I still dont trust Rojo. Seems to be so bad on the ball at times.
    His passing worries me aswel.

Never though I'd say it but with Smalling next to him I feel more comfortable.. weird

Fellaini would be a nice option in midfield, has a strong body and can do hard tackles when necessary.

i'm hoping we don't concede early,i have a feeling we will, but hoping we get the 1st goal, this will deflate them even more and we can push on.

Im not sure how you support United but i'll give it a go.

Come on you Red Demons win the game ahead,
I hope you do better than most predict in this thread,
The game is set, the kick off is near,
Please help us to go nine points clear,
Of City, the evil, the scourge of the earth,
go beat them tomorrow on their home turf.

    Come on United!

I could have done what I do for us and just said 'United, United, United. United, United, United.'

Are you being serious? Liverpool losing to Newcastle is sad news to you because you are worried that Newcastle will challenge us for top 4?! This must be a WUM. :wenger:
