Di Maria, may come good, but A.Young is good, right now. Mata was also decent in the last game.
The issue I have with Di Maria is that his confidence is shot - every time he dribbles forward, he gets ***-possessed. So in that diving incident, he decided it would be better to dive than to dribble past men (which Rooney demonstrated against Spurs, for his goal). In such an important game, we shouldn't use players whose confidence is gone.

And with regards to his stats, most of his assists/goals came in the first few games. Once his form dropped, he has been pretty useless.
I think the most notable contribution recently was his cross/assist against Arsenal.

The Di Maria of last year (and earlier in the season) would go straight into the starting 11. The Di Maria of 2015, isnt good enough to push other (in-form) players out.
Out of interest, does anybody know how many goals/assists Di Maria has in 2015?

In 2015, one goal when he came on as a sub against Yeovil.

In terms of assists, off the top of my head, one v QPR, one v Leicester, two v Burnley, one v Swansea and one v Arsenal. So 6 assists.

Prior to injury: 3 goals and 6 assists
After injury: 1 goal and 5 assists (all in 2015)

Even being so "poor" or "out of form", he's still making vital contributions in, what was, a dysfunctional team. I'd start di Maria based on the fact that he's a proven winner.

    Angel Di Maria

Minutes per shot on target or chance created for Manchester United this season in Premier League = 23.94

Minutes per shot on target or chance created for Real Madrid last season in La Liga = 19.22

Lots of United fans choose to focus on the bad passes, failed dribbles etc and ignore all the positives

Real Madrid fans = Darth Vader
Manchester United fans = The Emperor

I've got a bet on another forum with a Liverpool fan that if Man United beat Liverpool then I get to pick a new Screen name for him and same for him if they beat us.

Love to hear some good ones as I'm struggling for ideas lol.

    His could be eh_eh_eh_gargle_eh_eh_eh

Di Maria can come on in the second half if Mata isn't doing well.

You said it could depend on who wants it more, obviously both teams will be fired up totally to get a result. But United may be more reserved being the away team and being the team in which would be happier with a draw.
Yes i get you, so you think United will be content to play for a draw or hopefully nick one?

And what are 'in form' Ashley Young's stats?

Whilst Ashley Young hasn't acquired a similar set of statistics as di Maria, you cannot argue that he hasn't driven us towards the level we should be aspiring to be at. He scored a vital goal against Newcastle, played at left wing back/left back and was defensively resolute, and was brilliant against Tottenham. However, in such an important game, di Maria must start, as it was in this corresponding fixture in Spain where he shone the brightest.

Not looking forward to this at all.

I think we should play Di Maria instead of Mata tomorrow. I think we'll be under pressure most of the game and our best chances will probably come from counters. Di Maria/Rooney/Young is more effective in my view than Mata/Rooney/Young in that situation.

Selecting my team for this game, and I got a warning:

'Are you sure you want to select 7 midfielders'.

    Moyes, is that you? ;)

I agree that we should start Di Maria, we can always use Young as an impact sub, if required.

Umm.... no... Why would you say that? I've been coaching Sociedad for the last unos, dos, tres, four months.

Can see us going down the attrition route and selecting the grafters. Hopefully we grind out a point at least, if you offered me a draw now i'd take it though.

If United have coped well with pacey passing sides it means they've sat pretty deep. I don't see the likes of Di Maria forcing Sterling back and Herrera pushing onto Henderson. They're more likely to concede possession to these players, absorb their pressure and look to pick Liverpool off on the counter.

I can see United making this rather attritional and tactical rather than imposing the play onto Liverpool.
Not really. We've been a possession orientated team this year. For our all faults defensively, lack of pace at the back isn't one, and this allows us to be more compact further up the pitch. I don't think Van Gaal, at any point this year, has sent the team out armed with conceding possession to the opposition as a supplementary tactic. He believes in the much derided philosophy too much to allow himself to do that.
We played 90 percent of our games with Robin and /or Falcao up front. We hadn't had the pace to sit deep and would have been counter productive to do so.
Having said all that, it's my opinion that United and Van Gaal have more flexibility to adapt to liverpools set up than vice versa. It's the one upside to having to change your tactics weekly due to injuries. We've played a variety of styles this season that could benifit us in the run in.

Fair enough. With regards to your last point, tactical flexibility is pretty much what's changed our season. Adapting to a workable system is the hallmark of this year so far. As recently as Monday night the team and manager demonstrated a flexibility to cope with a hitherto unfamiliar set-up by changing the whole shape of the side at half-time.

The big question is: do you bring in di Maria? And if so, for Mata or Fellaini?
I would prefer di Maria over Mata. Mata is great in posession but I am afraid we won't have much posession at Anfield and Mata is not suited to these high tempo games. I prefer pace over calmness but di Maria has not really earned a starting spot. I would keep Fellaini in the team due to his combative nature and airial strength, and he seems to be hitting form.

Mata's defense has disappointed me at times too, but so has di Maria's. Mata was fine against Spurs, who are one of the form teams since New Years.

Absolutely gutted that I'm missing this tomorrow. Made even worse that I'll be somewhere with no signal whatsoever while the game is on. Horrible.

Really hope we can get some sort of result tomorrow - a draw would be good, a win would be a momentous achievement.

1-1 We'll get battered early doors but get ourselves back into it somehow. Considering most of the pundits seem to think Liverpool are the greatest team football has ever seen once again, 4 points and still being ahead of them would be decent.

Mata should be dropped as he wasn't great the other day, ashley young was great

What game did you watch? He was excellent. Nice location btw, I was on holiday there 3 years ago, lovely place.

... I am afraid we won't have much posession at Anfield ...

I dont understand why anybody would think this.
We may be weak in many areas, but the one area where we excel is in possession.
Man City are the only team who have higher possession percentages than us. All other teams, including Liverpool (in 8th), are below us.

Can someone explain why we wouldnt dominate possession at Anfield?

Perhaps because it would be the first time in living memory where we have achieved this?

Whatever happens I still expect us to be above them after gameweek 31. Winning will be massive, it could knock them down, with Arsenal away following. That last point is crucial IMO. Arsenal are nailed on for a top 4 finish, and maybe 2nd. I expect them to beat Liverpool and we should beat Villa.
You've been banging this drum throughout this thread .. you do realise there are 38 games in a season don't you ? *rolls eyes smilie*

Nothing will be decided today. The main benefit either team can take out of this match will be confidence because United's schedule remains tougher but we could just as easily let 2-3 matches slip away from us.

    The game of the season

With a winning we can reach the 4th place, a loss would be the end of everything, a draw is dangerous.

Anyone else nervous as hell like me?

I know we played well against Spurs but can't help feel that Liverpool will steam roll us in the opening 15-20mins and our defence won't be able to cope.
    3-1 Liverpool :(

If we win we are 5 points behind Chelsea. Why still aim for 4th when 5 behind 1st and 2 behind 2nd? Destiny in our own hands to finish 2nd. Nothing anyone can do about it if we succeed in our objective.
