I think we should really be looking forward to this game. When we went to Anfield at this point last season the team was struggling a little bit and Liverpool were flying and seems the other way round this time. United have made a decent start and realistically 4 points from the next 3 games in October would not be a disaster for our title challenge, so I think the pressure is not massive on this game. The press love to hype this game up, but I like the way Mourinho is very business like about the match and i expect that to transfer to the players.
"I understand the tradition, the emotions around with supporters, but I look at it in a professional way, to tell my players from the start of the season that every match is important. Every point is important, there’s no easy match, there is no matches that you prepare more carefully than others. I am not going to be here now and say this match is more important than another other." It is really interesting to see Jose's approach to these matches in contrast to Sir Alex Ferguson, I thought it was interesting this week when Gary Neville said that Ferguson used to get very intense ahead of these games and considering United never really played that well at Anfield under Ferguson I wonder if Mourinho's 'another match' approach to these big games may actually help the players more. Ferguson obviously had an emotional attachment to beating Liverpool (knocking them off their perch etc) which is great, but maybe that desperation effected the players a little bit in a lot of games at Anfield.
I am looking forward to see how this United side match up against the first genuinely high quality side we have faced this season. Mourinho is right when he says there are no easy games in the Premier League, but it's hard to see how you measure up until you play someone with genuine quality. Liverpool may be struggling results wise with just one win in seven, but they haven't played that badly in most of the games, at Anfield they will play with a big determination to win this game no doubt about it. I think we are better equiped this season for this challenge than we were last season, we have more confidence and less pressure and a manager who demands the rigt level of intensity in every game. Jose feels United are in a better shape than this time a year ago, when the Reds played out a goalless draw in the corresponding fixture.
“We’re in a better position in the table, I think we are playing better, you are more confident because when you have better results, you have more confidence to play than if not,” he said. “It’s a very difficult match for us, and I think it’s a very difficult match for them.”
Tactically I will be surprised if United don't sit deep and play on the counter in this game. It is Jose's approach for big games and he will also know that Liverpool, famously have problems breaking down a deep defence. United used this approach at Anfield last season and were fairly comfortable in the 0-0 draw. What I want to see from our performance this season is more of counter-attacking threat from us. Klopp's system depends upon winning possession quickly preferable in the opposition half. Liverpool fans have, by and large, bought into Klopp's philosophy -- they understand the idea behind counter-pressing, they cheer any examples of successful turnovers particularly fervently. United's quality in the defence-attack transition will be key, I don't expect us to try and build attacks, I expect us to use direct balls in-behind the Liverppol defence. This approach will stop Liverpool winning the ball back in dangerous area's but also could help expose Liverpool defence. Last season we knocked long-balls upto Ibrahimovic who had to battle on his own to win possession, but this season with Lukaku up-front with a genuine counter-attacking threat. Liverpool's back line is, in Premier League terms, no better than average. Klopp generally pushes his full-backs forwardand therefore space will open up in the channels for Lukaku to drift into. The space behind the perennially-out-of-position Alberto Moreno, and on the outside of the unconvincing Dejan Lovren, will be particularly crucial and United should target that zone.
The midfield zone will be spiky, Liverpool will use three energetic players that will look to press United's midfield players hard. Herrera and Matic who certain to start because of injuries are quite press resistant because of their quality in possession and are good recovering the ball themselves so expect plenty of tackles in this zone. Mkhitrayan may cause Henderson problems if he can be found in pockets of space. Henderson isn't a natural defensive midfielder and will leave space for United to counter-attack into, but this would require United playing through Liverpool's pressing which may be difficult to do as Liverpool are so well drilled at doing it.
Sadio Mane was Liverpool’s outstanding performer last season, scoring 13 league goals by storming inside from the right flank to run in behind the opposition defence. His injury is a big blow to Liverpool but the arrival of Mohamed Salah, who plays best from the right, still gives Liverpool a main goal threat. He will look to exploit the space created by Firmino’s movement into deeper positions, between the lines to tempt United's centre-backs out with Salah streaking past on the outside. United's left-back zone is a problem area and Salah could cause Young problems because he is not a natural defender and Blind problems if he plays there because of his lack of pace. I think Darmian might be the best option in this zone, because he defends the inside channel really well and is a fairly mobile defender.
Elsewhere I think Lingard will be a good option on the right instead of Mata. Mata may struggle to track Moreno's runs forward. Lingard is disciplined enough to deal with that as well as having the intelligence and speed to run in-behind Moreno when he gets caught out of position. Otherwise I would expect Bailly to return alongisde Jones and Herrera to replace the injured Fellani in midfield.
Subs - Romero, Smalling, Blind, Tuanzebe, Young, Mata, Martial.
