The time VG tries to fit in 3 strikers, and replace a perfect no10 in mata for rooney, is when VG must be questioned. RVP has been terrible, and he is the one that should be dropped today

The time to question it is after the game.

Rooney as a no.10... Ugh, if it weren't for Di Maria and the fact that we're playing Leicester, I'd be genuinely worried.

Well it's fine, we'll have to find out somehow how these 3 strikers work at once. Rooney and RvP better step it up and work together!

Glad Blackett and Rojo are starting again!

Mata didn't deserve this, RVP should be on the bench, he didn't show anything in the first games he played.

Wouldn't surprise me if Robin is the one who wins this match for us today. It only took one goal for them to stop the Rooney and Mata criticism's.

I fully expect the front four to keep chopping and changing.

Next week Mata may well be back in and RVP drops out etc. whoever he picks, that front 3 will be frightening.

Well we need to get RVP going, I don't see the big issue with starting him ahead of Mata here.

Matas work rate isn't great so it's totally understandable why he misses out.
That's a pretty petty excuse, really. van Persie has been below par, whilst Mata has been in great form in goalscoring and creating.

Mata should have started instead of Van persie who has been pisspoor for a while now, otherwise satisfied with the team. Expect a very tough game and I wouldn´t be surprised if it´s all doom and gloom tonight. The team will take time to gel (Looked good vs QPR but that was at home and a bloody poor QPR). Lvg will have this team challenging for trophys while playing entertaining football but I call for patience. Don´t think we can excpect all these new players to perform week in week out until Nov. Happily I´m going to be there against Hull and Stoke:drool:

Happy enough with the team but I think Rooney,RVP and Falcao is overkill.Mata brings something different to the team, don't think he should have been dropped.

Harsh on Mata but someones always gonna be left out. Probably should've been RVP today but feck me dead look at that attack! I'm excited to see how the front 3 play tbh.. even though its disappointing Mata's benched.

If RvP doesn't perform then he'll be dropped in the next match as simple as that. Mata was okay in his last match, scored a goal but wasn't that great apart from that.

Big mistake to drop Mata. Rooney has no vision or creativity at number 10 and will lose posession.

 it's getting really unbelievable with people wanting to drop Mata, he's been on form our best player over the last 10-12 games. Mata should be dropped for no one

Well you called it earlier, ridiculous situation but this is what happens when you spend massive money and have to try shoehorn 3 similar players in Rooney, RVP and Falcao into a team. Rooney may be capable of being the link man but Mata is a genuine number 10.

Would have dropped RVP for Mata as well, but hardly the end of the world. Rooney deeper will be interesting, hope he stays disciplined enough there to help Blind out a bit. Falcao and Di Maria linking up should be great hopefully.

We practically play with 3 strikers anyway. For most of the game Mata plays in a front three along with van Persie and Rooney and plenty of times you'll see him as the point of the attack, the furthest man forward, with van Persie and Rooney out on the flanks. I'm not entirely sure why we set up that way but if that's how van Gaal plans on setting his team up going forward then it makes perfect sense to play Rooney in that Mata role, IMO. It's more or less a 433 with a false nine IMO, much closer to that than it is to a diamond. People just called it a diamond because people associate Mata with playing as a #10 but in practice he didn't really play there. Playing Falcao, Rooney and van Persie in the same team in this setup was inevitable.

There is still a difference between mata and rooney, rooney should not be anywhere near our build up play, because he has the ability to give away those easy balls. We saw what it was like playing 3 strikers on rooney berbatov and tevez, its very unbalanced

Well we need to get RVP going, I don't see the big issue with starting him ahead of Mata here.
That's true, when he's in form he's one amazing striker. It's only doing him harm by never playing him.

I'm sure he'll get better once he manages to get his first goal.

Rvp was crap last week and matter was one of our best players. Feck knows what's going on there.

In our last away game against Burnley the front trio all struggled. Mata was near invisible, not entirely his fault either but maybe that's why LVG is trying something different here. I'm not a fan of Rooney playing off the strikers and Mata is better than him there but he offers more work rate and that's probably one of the reasons for it.

We'll see if it's a horrible decision. Van Persie needs game time and confidence to get back to his lethal form. The reality is that one had to drop out and it was likely always to be between him and Mata. It'll be the same all season, all four can't always play so get used to one of them dropping out.

Looks like the diamond to me. Same back 4 as the last day. I can understand Smalling being on the bench as he is just back from injury but it's a bit strange that Shaw is being eased in still considering he played 45 minutes on monday. Rafael was thrown straight back in against QPR after all. Would rather Shaw at LB with Rojo switching to CB in place of Blackett.

I'm a big fan of RVP but can't understand how he is starting ahead of Mata. I hope LVG isn't being sentimental towards him. Unless he sharpens up soon he needs to be dropped and hopefully LVG is willing to do this.
