Mctominay and Lindelof cannot start this game.
Strongly doubt Lindelof will rest this one. It was his long ball that initiating the attack for the crucial first goal against Everton and he secured three points by scoring the only goal in the match before. Both matches clean sheets. Getting the CBs involved in our attack and contributing to our goal scoring is exactly what ETH wants. Plus, Varane doesn’t play to the left and ETH doesn’t like Maguire to left so there is only Evans left in that case. I think he’ll play.

Well ... I did a bet on the Everton game last weekend, it was as follows.

    Rashford - goal or assist

    Bruno - goal or assist

    Martial to score anytime

    United to win.

A tenner at 13's so that Bruno pass to Martial was lovely :)

So if Martial starts tonight, I think for good luck I will do the same bet.

Maybe change it a bit as Rashford isn't palying!

The key to win comfortably today is to leave McTominay on the bench and opt for able passer of the ball instead.

Because United have been so much better when McTominay didn't start. Oh hang on, we've been even worse. 4 wins 6 losses in the 10 matches McTominay didn't start and that includes the Brentford match which was heading for another loss until he scored twice in injury time to turn into a win.

Shambolic 1-0 win over Wolves in which they had 23 shots of which 17 were from within our penalty area. 0-2 at Spurs. 3-2 Forest (helped by red card and penalty), 1-3 Arsenal, 0-1 Palace and 2-1 Brentford.

3-4 Bayern Munich, 2-3 Galatasaray, 3-0 Palace EFL, 0-3 Newcastle EFL

Nope, only the top team in the group qualified so United needed to ensure they were one of the best placed 2nd teams. We were far from already through, and it was an incredible nervy evening.
But in the end, due to how other results went, even a defeat would have seen us through.

It's all set up for us to have an awful night. The torrential rain, the hostile crowd. Yet I feel optimistic about our chances. Is this the denial phase?

Our midfield options are 2 of Mainoo, Amrabat or McTominay. McTominay is an automatic choice there, as is Mainoo.

That pitch is brutal. The sort of pitch where it's more likely to get a 0-0 or complete flip of a coin who wins it by a random shit goal. Won't be able to play proper football in this.

We need to win away and get something from Bayern, right?
Haha.. Cant believe we are in this position.. comical CL performance..

More worried about Mainoo and injury in those conditions. I know it was Casemiro that did him in in preseason, but those conditions have the hallmarks of someone getting accidently clattered as follow throughs go wildly out of control due to the momentum from the extra slipperiness, and it's someone who has very good close control that's the most likely to be in the firing line.

Hope it's a brief of quick give and goes and try to use the slickness of the pitch (if it isn't waterlogged), but that doesn't bode well with no secondary cog to help progress the ball.

Would be very good for this to get postponed. Though not sure if there's any chance to push this til the week after the Bayern game.

It's not the same pitch is it?

That Everton win was great, a rare treat in what's been a turbulent season, but tonight we must not lose, or else we could be looking at another false dawn, with Newcastle coming up afterwards.

It's extremely waterlogged judging off the videos. Give and goes won't work at all. It's a hoof and hope sort of game

If we win here and draw against Bayern, then it depends on who wins out of Galatasaray vs Kopenhagen as there would be 2 teams on 7 points. If Kopenhagen wins, then we would go through due to away goals in the head to head games with them. If Galatasaray wins, then first it depends on if we win by 1 or 2. If we win by 1, then likely Galatasaray as they got 3 away. If we win by 2, then it'd be us as we have better head to head goal difference.

All in the assumption Bayern beats Kopenhagen today. Lose today and we are likely out from Europe completely.

Different pitch, so a poster says. Funny, because tactics change extremely depending on whether the pitch is sodden or slick. McTominay goes from potential liability to potential god.

Could even lose against Bayern if the other game is drawn.
    Yeah.. saw that..
Gala away has to be the toughest game out of the 4 no Bayern games.. and we are here needing to win that after fecking up 2 of the other 3..

Martial is going to start to put him on the bench after that Everton game is gonna kill his confidence fully Ten Hag has to be smart here.
Who cares about Martial's confidence? Keeping him happy at the expense of either Garnacho or Hojlund playing out of position is not a risk worth taking.

It’s the hope that kills (or maybe it doesn’t, we’ll see at 7:45pm). Forget the defeat to Copenhagen, I thought it was finished in September when we lost the home game to these. Now, on matchday 5 when things have not got better whatsoever, we’re somehow still in with a shout. We obviously can’t lose again, but we really need a win if we’re being realistic, as if we draw, we’ll need to beat Bayern and hope that the Copenhagen vs Galatasaray game either ends in a draw or Copenhagen win by less than we do, essentially.

Dear me, even writing that out gave me heartburn.

on top of everything else, I don't like the fact that Newcastle will have had an extra dy to prepare for Saturday's game

Like, the manager and the fans? Everyone? Why piss off a decent player who played well in the last game and we need until the end of the season?

    Onana
    Wan-Bissaka Maguire Lindelöf Shaw
    Mainoo McTominay
    Pellistri Bruno Garnacho
    Martial

    Do it, Erik.
    We will win.

This seems like a sensible line-up to me, given Hojlund has had one training session with the main group since his injury and Dalot struggled against Zaha's physical strength for their opening goal at Old Trafford. Pellistri started Uruguay's recent 2-0 wins over Brazil (home) and Argentina (away) in World Cup qualifiers.

Martial for 60 to 70 mins then bring on Hojlund. Likewise, probably have to substitute one of the wide players and possibly Mainoo at a similar stage in the match.

Think we can win tonight and go through
We're on three points. The other two sides are on four. We can win tonight and still need a result against Bayern to go through. A win tonight effectively guarantees Europa - which I'd rather go out altogether.

Or we could win tonight and pray that gala and Copenhagen draw in the last game. If we win tonight I’d fancy us to get a result against Bayern. Almost had them at their place.

Ten Hag will pick a front 3 that gives us the best chance of winning a must-win game: Martial doesn't feature in that. Do you think Pep was worrying about potentially pissing off Kyle Walker or Phil Foden when he didn't start them in the Champions League final?

Yes so win tonight puts us on 6 and then a draw between Gala and Copenhagen puts us through if we lose to Bayern.

I think we can actually get something from Bayern. I guess let’s win tonight then hope for getting through.
