Midfield concerns me in this game. The intensity and pressure of the environment is likely to spur Gala' on and the likelihood we're going to have to earn the right to play is very high, imo. What this means for us is actually playing the ball around in midfield is a must - everything cannot be verticle or ill-considered because it just invites wave after wave of attacks coming back at us.
Mainoo is definitely going to start this game. My concern is who goes next to him and how well they handle the occasion because they need to show for the ball and be a strong foundational support. In essence, they should be the leading hand next to the 18-year old and not taking their cue from him, which is what I believe will happen regardless.
I do think McTominay will get the nod over Amrabat as ten Hag likes to match aggression and energy with aggression and energy, which is what McTominay will be expected to deliver.
There can be none of this excessively low touches of the ball business. Actually, let me rephrase: if the touches are low then there has to be a large number of solid ball carries to compensate, so even if McTominay isn't doing well in passing chains or touch progression, he needs to be juggernauting up the pitch and stretching the opposition in that way whilst mentally conditioning them to the threat of him taking off, which would naturally drag bodies into his vicinity to snuff before he can pick up a head of steam, once he has them trailing, it's imperative he can release the ball - absolutely nothing fancy, just a short pass to another red shirt, please. On the other side of the ball, he needs to make a nuisance of himself. Positionally he is poor, but he should at least get himself in the thick of the action and be an obstacle rather than a traffic cone.
McTominay has a terrible penchant for ball-watching and letting players run off him. That can't be fixed, but instead of ball-watching, at least go toward it and be useful in some kind of press or pressuring sense.
If we can get a foothold in midfield, I believe we can win this game. Zaha was going to be a major concern up against Dalot, but with AWB, it gives us more opportunity to play our game rather than catering to theirs, as what was previously going to be a collective effort to stop Zaha now becomes a 1on1 that AWB is very capable of winning outright and pushing Zaha back.
Have been loathe to put up formations and line ups this season, but I'll go:
------------------------------------------------------Onana
---------------------------------------Maguire--------------Lindelof
Wan Bissaka------------------------------------------------------------------Shaw
--------------------------------------------------Mainoo
----------------------------McTominay------------------Bruno
Hojlund-----------------------------------Martial------------------Rashford/Garnacho
Martial and Bruno have the best link-up of any forward-midfield combination. Martial is there for the interplay, but he also enables Bruno to work himself into threatening positions with his runs away from the ball or subtle switches from hold-up to to transitional. Pace down both flanks to keep them honest and also keep that threat of the counter constant to force them to take their defensive line deep.
The game is won and lost in midfield, for me and I think McTominay has a crucial role to play in that one way or another as his is the side to attack in the pocket of space between AWB and Mainoo if he's not doing the work we need him to do.
This is a more than winnable game, so long as we keep our nerve.
