With this line-up we have: Mazraoui playing wing-back, which he isn't great at. Dalot playing on the wrong side, which he isn't great at. Bruno having to be moved deep, because of a lack of options. Garnacho and Amad playing centrally, when they are arguably best in the wide areas.

Even ignoring the obvious quality issues, we have half a team playing at least somewhat out of position.

    This! Beg, borrow, loan, ANYTHING

Just get a striker that can actually put the ball in the back of the bloody net, you know like a striker is actually supposed to do

Although I do not want another Wout!!!
What about Wout van Aert? He can't be worse than our current crop of shite

Starting with Hojlund over Zirkzee week after week is odd. Especially when you can see that Amad, Bruno and Garnacho are better when they have striker who can hold the ball.
Zirkzee started the last 2 and was pretty poor. Every time one of them starts I think 'just give the other one a run'

It's because they are both equally poor right now.

Can see the thinking behind playing three quick options in attack - Amad, Garcacho, Hojlund - in a tough away game where we'll probably be more dangerous on the break.

Some suggested lines up seemed to have a slow front three - likes of Fernandes, Eriksen or Mainoo at #10''s with Zirkzee at #9 - but this didn't seem the kind of game to go with that.

I prefer Bruno deep anyway in this system and think that's his future so I'm pleased he's there again. Means you can pick an extra attack minded player too.

The problem is Zirkzee is nowhere near balls that come into the box (very frustrating in the last couple of games) and you lose the ability to play balls in behind on the break because he’s as slow as they come.

But I agree, Hojlund is detrimental to our buildup.

Whoever starts, hardly anyone will be excited. Both are lacking and neither is in particularly great form.

Have he tried them both up front with Bruno or Amad behind them? Might make up one good striker combined.

The options are so little, tonight Amorim has basically gone with Bruno instead of Mainoo/Collyer

    That's it!

Then you toss a coin and pick either Hojlund or Zirkzee.

    Team selection DONE!

    Amad is definitely best centrally.

Man City played 2 new signing yesterday and we haven't even signed one player. This club is so frustrating.

Another 6 defenders/defensive minded players?it is not as if we are too difficult to score against

Christ, can we get a half decent centre forward in before the transfer window closes. Having to alternate between Zirkzee and Hojlund every week, I'm losing the will to live!

Same, it is just awful to know that there is such a slim chance of our CF doing much of anything. Hopefully one of them scores today but 9/10 Hojlund is just a surrender of possession and Zirkzee has 0 cutting edge. I wish we'd taken Osimhen on loan when he was available, at least he has a track record of scoring goals and isn't a non-entity in the air, which is more than can be said about our existing options.

We are back playing 5-4-1 with '1' that cant trap the ball.

I will simply never understand Amorim’s persistence playing Mazraoui at wing back.
Playing fullbacks as wingbacks is the heart of our problems. Both Maz and Dalot are offering very little going forward. We desperately need to sign Dorgu or another LWB this window.

Have you seen the amount we've spent this last few years? The money had to run out at some stage.
Why do you think there's big rumours of selling Garnacho?!

The problem with wingback is it's such an unusual position that very few are specialist at.
The worry with Maz is that he was supposed to be a player who "could" play this position.

But play it versus "excel" at it are hugely different.

Left wing back feels even more of a problem. There was one game Dalot was on the break a few times, but simply isn't an attacker so was shut down easily.

Away game will help that frontline

    Bruno assist for Hojlund incoming!

    C'mon Rasmus.

Just about and none of those goals came in the PL, where he never looked like scoring.
Yeah but he scored that keepy uppy volley against that Belgian(?) side. And he held the ball up late against City which tangentially led to the McTominay rocket. Between those two moments and the "coming from Shanghai, we're all gonna die," I'm glad we had him.

Was Rooney throwing the ball back aggressively. We also lost there 3-0 the following season where we had an insane injury crisis.
Was that the one where he had Carrick and Fletcher in CB or something ridiculous?

We had it so good it’s easy to forget some of the rare bad.

Yeah, he played just about 100 minutes across 12 games in the Premier League. Not ideal circumstances. Zirkzee also has nowhere near a goal every 100 minutes in the Premier League.

I couldn't cope with him at all. He was so slow and well below PL standard.

Good post. Factual without emotion, but pointing out some interesting issues.

3 PL goals for a young player in a new league is definitely better than 0 for an aging striker who was miles past his best.

    At least Zirkzee can improve.
