Smalling, Schneiderlin, Darmian and Rojo are in the lineup. None of them have played more than 5 minutes since the season has started. Schneiderlin came on for 5 minutes against Bournemouth exactly one month ago and Smalling came on for about 2 minutes twice and the last time Rojo was seen was the Community Shield

Plus we've got another game in the League Cup next week. That's probably where the players not playing tonight will play.

I wonder what's the reasoning behind Pogba playing. Things are not looking bright for the likes of Memphis and Carrick.
I bet Carrick doesn't really mind, he's at the twilight of his career and I'm sure he's happy to just sit as backup for the occasional game nowhere days.

I reckon Pogba has played because he didn't get a pre season and Mourinho feels he needs additional game time to get into his stride which I don't think is a bad move. Additionally he's probably gonna tease the idea of a 4-3-3 with Pogba as the AM just to see if that brings and extra level out of his game and the teams in the absence of Rooney.

Finally, I agree with you on Memphis, signs don't look great right now but he will just have to take any chance that he can get and grab it with both hands.

Why are people still surprised Mkithryan isn't playing, he's injured.

It only took a defeat for Mourinho to forget all about the ‘coming September I'll give minutes to every player’ thing.

Should've been more cynical in my prediction. Got De Gea instead of Romero, Bailly instead of Blind, and Pogba in, though.

Darmian, Smalling, Rojo, Schneiderlin haven't played, Rashford didn't start any game. Herrera started only 1 game. So that's 6/11 players.

Strong team, but you just know Rojo will slow down our left side to a halt.

He's put 4 players in there who have hardly played all season. That's a pretty good amount of changes IMO. Also Rashford has had game time but hasn't been starting so that's 5 players.

What side would you have liked him to pick? One which featured players who haven't started a single game so far?
That was the apparent logic of Mourinho's statements while in August. Of this team, I only find it weird that Martial and Mata are starting, since I was/am expecting them to start again against Watford.

There are 8 changes compared to last game. Darmian, Rojo, Smalling, Schneiderlin, Rashford all starting first time. Herrera only has his 2nd start. Memphis/TFM may come on as subs. That is definitely good enough on the promise.

I suppose Mou wants to get the group won asap then be more experimental later on?
Yeh I think this is bang on especially as this is one of our harder games in the group and we do need to bounce back from the city game.

DDG was always in the team, I think the only time you change your keeper is if he is injured.
The basis of a stable team is a stable keeper, its not like they are running round the pitch for the whole game.

Rashford has got the first start of the season and Rojo is playing his first match of the season. Quite likely we will be seeing TFM, Carrick and Depay gett some time in the 2nd half. Which is basically what Mourinho said would happen, minutes for more players. Considering we lost our last game, its quite important we bounce back and get a nice away win. Team is as strong as it should be.

With this line up (formation), the boys better put in a great performance so we stick with it!

Yes, that's my point. Mourinho's first thing, his logic, is winning. Giving minutes to second and third choice players for positions isn't in his nature as a manager, contrary to what he's been telling us in August. I like it, not complaining. Will he be able to do this, feature 5 first-teamers on a Thursday game come March, though?

    Team sheet suggests 4-2-3-1:

I bet Carrick doesn't really mind, he's at the twilight of his career and I'm sure he's happy to just sit as backup for the occasional game nowhere days.
I'm sure Carrick is professional enough to stay focused but I doubt he 'doesn't really mind'. Pretty much any player with the right attitude wants to be playing regularly. You can listen to the likes of Scholesy talking about how difficult it was to adjust to the idea that he was too old to play Saturday-Wednesday-Sunday.

Are you actually disappointed to see a strong team play because it fecked up your line up prediction on a football forum where the prize for winning the competition is feck all?
Not at all, just trying to understand Mourinho's logic. He's walking a tight rope with his large squad, eventual defeats, big egos, and youngsters' tradition.

Love the midfield 3. Hopefully it's Schneiderlin holding with Herrera and Pogba ahead. Not fussed on the Europa league but if those 3 have great games tonight it could be the signal we need to show Mourinho it's the way to go.

What are you on about? He wont and shouldnt change the whole team. Its not a league cup we're playing

Why? He's that crap that we'll have to be down to the bare bones before he gets a game....or be playing someone like Northampton next week.
Why don't we sell him then if he isn't good enough to play in the group stages of the EL?

Barcelona usually play one keeper in La Liga and the other in the Champions League. If Europa League doesn't count for much, could't Romero feature. He would be much readier to start, when De Gea eventually gets injured or punished.

Yeh perhaps I worded it wrong and your correct he won't be 'happy' per say but with Carrick he loves the club and he's never really been a player to kick up a fuss and cause a stir in the dressing room so I'm sure he's acting very professional about it. I do think he is intelligent enough to realise that he isn't going to be first choice any more though and I reckon the club will have informed him of that when he signed his 1 year deal. Perhaps could come on tonight anyway and hope to impress.

There are a number of players brought in today and he's played the deserving kids too. I don't see a problem. I don't see any deserving player with an ego that is getting a hard deal. If someone like a Memphis throws a strop, he can feck off really.

 It does indeed. Mourinho will never bow down to Peps 4-3-3 system. He feels he has to win using 4-2-3-1. 4-3-3 is far superior.
UEFA never ever gets the formation right! Although, in this case, I think it did: the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 hybrid!

If Pogba plays well in the advanced midfield position, Rooney is in trouble.
