    FOSU-MENSAH'S FUTURE IN MIDFIELD?
"It is dependable on vacancies in your squad. You have seen that players in my squad are playing in different positions than what they are used to in their former careers. When there is a vacancy and you think a young player has the quality to play there, you give him the chance and he takes it. You can ask Bastian Schweinsteiger who, at Bayern Munich, played on the right side. I made him a centre midfielder because I looked at his profile and I thought he can better play in the middle and he enjoys it more."

People take the mick out of Van Gaal for playing players out of position, but moving Schweinstieger to centre midfield was one of the best conversions I can remember. He's easily been one of the best midfielders of his generation.

It was a good move, but he has gone overboard with our team and most of them it hasn't worked. Once in a while it will.

In all honesty I had forgotten Schweini played for us. When is he back?

Don't think it's been as bad as people make out, in regards to playing players out of psoiton. Who would you say he's played out of positon in our team, who has looked really uncomfortable?

We should win this but Everton know that this is their only chance for a decent season so they'll be up for it.

    Fellaini as a striker
    Fellaini as a midfielder
    Young as a striker
    Mata as a winger
Rashford on the right (only 1 match I think)
    Lingard in the middle

Lingard started his career as an AM
Rashford played on the right a lot in the youth teams.

But they did good in other positions in the first team and there was no reason for sudden movement to a different position in a season where every match is important.

I think Lingard has done well in the middle. Adds pace when travelling with the ball which mata can't provide.
Rashford on the right was to try and get Martial back up top like a lot of people believed should happen. It failed and he put him back up top, can't see a problem with that personally

    My team would be

    DDG
    Fosu Smalling Blind Darmian
    Schniderlin
    Herrera Rooney
    Mata Martial
    Rashford

we could have won the first game if the ref had sent payet off for diving and if he hadn't given a free kick for a soft challenge too. That was an actual mistake by the ref unlike the offside which was quite clearly the right decision
I'll give you that. I was a bit annoyed at Van Gaals comments at the time.

With Coleman out, Funes Mori banned and Jagielka/Stones huge doubts, this is the biggest chance we've had for years. We must keep the pressure on them and test their defence early. No doubt Martinez will be trying to play a high scoring game.

    Stick to the 433.

We look best as a team in this formation,

    DDG
    Valencia Smalling Blind Darmian

    Carrick

    Herrera Schneiderlin

    Mata Rashford Martial

I'm shocked how many people have Rojo starting. That's an absolute no-no, there are 2 or 3 better options at left-back and Shaw isn't even fit.

I think we should go with an unchanged team from Palace, though I expect Carrick or Fellaini (or both) may find their way back into the team.

    De Gea
    Valencia....Smalling....Blind....Darmian
    Herrera......Morgan
    Rooney
    Young.........................................Depay
    Martial

    Subs: Monstah, Pereira, Rashford.

    De Gea
    TFM - Smalling - Blind - Darmian
    Schneiderlin
    Mata - Rooney
    Lingard - Rashford - Martial

Carrick's not been in the match day squad for the last two matches, despite being fully fit. Maybe he will come back into the side?

IIRC, there was a discusson when Schweinsteiger first signed where this was debunked. Joachim Loew first played him in midfield in 2007, two years before LVG came to Bayern. I remember someone posting a link that explained how when LVG first came to Munich, he moved Schweinsteiger back to the wing, but in preseason the players spoke out and convinced him to move him back.

It shouldn't be this way, but I'm really excited about this game mainly due to how many players are missing/doubtful for them!

    David de Gea

    Valencia Smalling Blind Darmian

    Rooney Carrick Herrera

    Lingard Rashford Martial

have this nagging feeling everton will raise their game and we'll whimper out of the competition.

but I guess this is what happens when LVG has destroyed any confidence have in this team.

Well with Everton's form and injuries, if we don't win we simply don't deserve a place in the final.

    DDG
    Valencia - Smalling - Blind - Darmian
    Carrick
    Mata - Rooney - Herrera - Martial
    Rashford

Take names and reputations out of it. Review each players skills and play them in the position which best suits their attributes. A first principles approach, great in theory.

I know they have been bad recently, but they will dominate us, they have nothing to lose and they want to salvage their season.

Young as striker, Mata as right winger, Di Maria as striker, Rooney as central midfielder.

The only conversion it has worked is Blind as CB.

    Fellaini as a striker
    Fellaini as a midfielder
    Young as a striker
    Mata as a winger

Fellaini played as a striker/support striker at Everton and was very good there.

Young, I guess was an experiment because he done well in the U21's a few days prior to him playing him there, but I doubt it will happen again.

Mata's best form, in my opinion, come playing on the right last season. Also started off as a winger at Valencia.

Rashford played in the wide areas a lot in the U18's, so I'm told.

Lingard in the middle has been good, in my opinion. Prtetty sure he played there for the under 21's too.

Again, like Young, I think he only played Di Maria up top once, if I remember correctly, and that was in a 352, where he was able to drift out to the wing - similar to how he used Robben in the world cup. Didn't work, but it was worth a try.

Rooney was played in midfield long before Van Gaal. I could agrue that Rooney's best performance (Newcastle last season) in centre midfield.

I honestly don't think any of these ideas were outlandish.
