Think he'll play Fellaini as a striker and rest Rooney for this one.

    Louis Van Gaal Press Conference:

    Romero

    Darmian
    Smalling
    Blind
    Shaw

    Carrick
    Schneiderlin

    Fellaini
    Herrera
    Memphis

    Rooney

SUBS: Johnstone, McNair, Schweinsteiger, Mata, Januzaj, Young, Hernandez.

On the basis that LVG hinted he'd rotate a little and the press saying Herrera and Fellaini are pretty much dead certs to play; I'd be surprised if Schweinsteiger starts two in a row within four days of each other, plus Carrick is fresh and Mata could do with a rest.

    ......................Romero.....................

    ............Herrera........Schneiderlin.......
    Mata...............Fellaini............Memphis

If we balls it up and it end 2-0, does anybody know if the away goal rule kicks in after 90 mins, or 120 mins?

We'd be out after 90 minutes if the score was 2-0 to Brugge.

AFAIK, the only time away goals only apply after extra time is in the semi-final of the League cup.

If we go through am I right in saying we'll be third seeds?

These 8 are 2nd seeds and all higher than us I believe?

    Madrid
    Atletico
    Arsenal
    Porto
    Valencia
    Zenit
    ManCity
    Sevilla

Not sure if it's accurate, but this says we'll be second:

We have a commanding 3-1 lead but for some reason I'm nervous about tonight's game. I just hope we score first, that should be enough to put the whole tie to bed.

No messing around resting players. Brugge will be well up for this and if they were to get the first goal we are in trouble. We have until Sunday for our next game so I would play :

    ------------------Romero-------------------

    Darmian------Smalling ------Blind------Shaw

    ----------Carrick--------Schneiderlin----------

    Mata--------------Fellaini-----------Memphis

    -------------------Rooney-------------------

Yeah I just remembered Dortmund aren't in it this year so that frees up a spot too.
Zenit are the champions of Russia too, so they're automatically pot 1.

0-3 win, and after the win we announce the signings of Muller and Bale.

He won't rest players for this game because it's his and ours most important game yet, we need to get into group stages this season and he won't mess about it.

Fellaini will probably start in nr 10 position instead of Januzaj, but I'd rather want Fellaini replace Rooney and Januzaj to stay as a nr 10 or give Herrera a chance as a nr 10.

Rest people after 4 games, in the most important game of LVG's tenure?
    I think not.

This is it people, we could be back in the CL this evening.
Hopefully today, we will put an end to Moyes' disastrous season which is what saw us out of the CL, in the first place.

Brugge should be annihilated today. Another weak performance in the league this weekend and injuries not taking a turn for the better. Brugge's young striker (Oulare) got into trouble and got told by the coach to apologize to fans and teammates alike. The other striker, Diaby, is a new transfer, not hitting form and not fitting into the club yet. The other striker (De Sutter) is leaving for Turkey after tonight, I doubt he'll even feature but if he does I don't think we'll see him go 100% in challenges (Prove me wrong, Tom).

The creative attacking midfielder Vazquez played a bad first leg and played bad this weekend. He wants to transfer away from Brugge (for a CL club) but nobody is making any offers. So he isnt mentally ready.

Brugge have to score 2 so expect a high backline and probably loads of space. What Brugge fear most is an early United goal killing the match, so I think they'll start the game a bit cautious.

Remember the groups are seeded based on the five previous seasons which includes us getting to the final in 2010/11. This is why we're still a pot 2 team. The current coefficients listed on UEFA's website start in the 2011/12 season, which means we fall down the rankings and City climb because they've only been in the Champions League four seasons prior to this. Not being in Europe at all last year means we really need to be making quarter finals or better (unless we win the Premier League of course) to keep our seeding.

So we're fecked then, got it.

    What I Want.

    -----------------------Chicha-------------
    Memphis--------------Mata--------------Adnan

    ------------Herrera-----------Morgan

    Shaw-------Blind-------Mike-----------Darmian

Although I expect same line up as last week,

Quarters or better is a bit of a guess if I'm being truthful but it looks hard to see how we're going to get there. We're 20th in the rankings currently and although not every team above us will necessarily qualify for the Champions League (Dortmund, Schalke, Napoli, Basel and depending on tonight Leverkusen) are ahead of us but aren't in it, you do get points for the Europa League and the way the pots are decided based on this new system it looks difficult. Some of it depends on which teams win their league I suppose.

With rumours of Herrera starting I'm going with this:

    ---------------Romero------------------
    ---------------Same back 4-------------
    -----------------Morgan-----------------
    --------Herrera------------Fellaini------
    ---Mata---------Rooney----------Memphis

We're playing in the CL tonight, bro.
No we're not. This is a Champions League qualification tie. In the same way as the current England matches aren't European Championship matches, rather, qualifiers to get into it. There's a difference. Pretty well illustrated by the fact that players are not cup tied after the match.

I'm surprisingly not nervous. As long as we qualify, I won't even care if we draw. I just want to see us perform well. Hopefully some goals from our attack - will give us a huge boost.

I don't think he's going to go with one defensive mid, especially in a game where we don't have to score but should not concede. Its 2/3 from Carrick, Basti and Morgan and 1/3 from Herrera, Fellaini and Adnan.

If Herrera does indeed start, then I hope for his sake that we don't get a bad result, or he'll be frozen out for another couple of weeks.

This was my original thinking too but I got influenced by this thread and went with Schneiderlin, Fellaini and Herrera... Not feeling confident I made the right decision :(

I can see both Carrick and Schweinsteiger not starting tonight. Maybe wrong but is there any need to play them when we could put Schneiderlin in and then play Herrera with Rooney playing off Fellaini.

I wouldn't really consider that a risk and I'd like to think we could win this game without them and they're both available for the Swansea game.

Come on United let's do these waffles over!

I don't think that's a fair comparison, in the EC qualifiers you play for years to quality and play many more games in qualifying than in the EC.

Over the years, when Arsenal or whoever have had to play one of the qualification ties, neither opposition supporters nor the media made it out like they weren't in the CL at all until they qualified. Thus the idea there are four CL places.

I get what you're saying, but hopefully you know what I mean too.

Apparently the weather is really shit at the moment so I'm expecting the game to be just as shit.

This will be Rooney's 5th game starting despite being shit. If he puts in another tepid performance up front, then I've officially lost patience with him.
