Everton Football Club (nicknamed The Toffees and The Blues) are a professional football club based in Liverpool, England. Everton were founded as St Domingo FC in 1878 so that members of the congregation of St Domingo Methodist New Connexion Chapel in Breckfield Road North, Everton could play sport year round – cricket was played in summer. The club's first game was a 1–0 victory over Everton Church Club. The club was renamed Everton in November 1879 after the local area, as people outside the congregation wished to participate. The club was a founding member of the Football League in 1888–89 and won their first League Championship title in the 1890–91 season. Everton won the FA Cup for the first time in 1906 and the League Championship again in 1914–15. The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 interrupted the football programme while Everton were champions, which was something that would again occur in 1939.

It was not until 1927 that Everton's first sustained period of success began. In 1925 the club signed Dixie Dean from Tranmere Rovers. In 1927–28, Dean set the record for top-flight league goals in a single season with 60 goals in 39 league games, which is a record that still stands. He helped Everton win their third League Championship that season. Everton's second successful era started when Harry Catterick was made manager in 1961. In 1962–63, his second season in charge, Everton won the League Championship. In 1966 the club won the FA Cup with a 3–2 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Everton again reached the final in 1968, but this time were unable to overcome West Bromwich Albion at Wembley. Two seasons later in 1969–70, Everton won the League Championship, finishing nine points clear of nearest rivals Leeds United. During this period, Everton were the first English club to achieve five consecutive years in European competitions – covering the seasons from 1961–62 to 1966–67. Howard Kendall took over as manager and guided Everton to their most successful era. Domestically, Everton won the FA Cup in 1984 and two League Championships in 1984–85 and 1986–87. In Europe, the club won its first, and so far only, European trophy by securing the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985.

All in all, Everton have won 15 major trophies: the League Championship nine times (fourth most as of 2017–18), the FA Cup five times (ninth most) and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once. The club have also competed in the top division for a record 114 seasons, missing the top division only four times (1930–31 and three consecutive seasons starting with 1951–52). Everton have play their homes games at Goodison Park since 1892, after moving from Anfield following a row over its rent. Their biggest rivals are neighbors Liverpool, against whom they contest the Merseryside Derby.

I think Amorim will have one eye on the Arsenal game and he'll avoid starting Hojlund, Garnacho and maybe Martinez.

    Onana
Mazraoui - De Ligt - Shaw
    Amad - Ugarte - Eriksen - Dalot
    Bruno - Mount
    Rashford

I hope we start strong. Finish the game off within the first hour and rest 5 players for the last half hour.

but this game is more winnable

We have a good record against Everton recently. Might struggle defensively as players are still adapting to the new system though.

but this game is more winnable
Indeed. Hence why I predicted we would field an 11 that should be capable of beating Everton. Resting Hojlund after his brace is a probably a bit of a wild shout. The other predictions make sense. Garnacho and Martinez have started the last couple of matches and we've got 2 games a week for the foreseeable future.

Considering Amorim spoke about splitting the squad into 2 teams, I fully expect the lineup to more resemble the team against Ipswich rather than Bodo

Slightly strange that Kobbie has been left on the bench for the entirety of the last two games. Surely he’ll get a runout at some stage here.

He's a young player who started last season injured, then played almost every game including all summer and then had a huge drop off in form and got injured. I am glad we have not rushed him straight back, he needs to be properly managed at his age.

I’m not arguing he should be “rushed back”, merely surprised he hasn’t had at least a few minutes in either of the two games he’s been available for.

Yeah fair. Maybe they are just being very cautious with him like yoro

    If Yoro can play, this is the team I want to see;

    Onana
Yoro - De Ligt - Licha
    Mazraoui - Mainoo - Ugarte - Shaw
    Bruno - Amad
    Højlund

    If not;

    Onana
Mazraoui - De Ligt - Licha
    Amad - Mainoo - Ugarte - Shaw
    Bruno - Garnacho
    Højlund

Why casemiro over ugarte? I would say the latter is a far better pick for cm.

Sorry he should be Ugarte -_-. Totally blinked with that one, was in the car waiting on the missus, so quickly copied someone here.

I don’t think Amorim sees Amad as a 10 or Shaw as a wingback.

Yeah seems like its either Amad/Antony at RWB.

    Onana/Bayindir

    Mazaraoui/Yoro
    De Ligt/Maguire
    Martinez/Shaw

    Amad/Antony
    Ugarte/Casemiro
    Mainoo/Eriksen
    Dalot/Malacia

    Bruno/Mount
    Rashford/Garnacho
    Hojlund/Zirkzee

Is how he sees our squad at the moment I reckon.

Ugarte and Casemiro combination worked so well last time when they played together. Why not try that one again?

I hope Yoro's injury doest affect his career long term. I really want him to be like he was before the injury.
I mean, how fecking unlucky can we be, we go and get the best young defender in the world, and he breaks his foot in pre-season.

I hope you're wrong. From where I'm sat, he's our best attacker.

Edit: I reckon he's playing there because he can't trust Garnacho to hold onto the ball.

We lost 4 games in a row to start the season and since then we have only lost one more (against Southampton of all teams) but it hasn't been pretty. We are due another drubbing and I'm very nervy of the way you set up and the players you have to use at WB/AM against our full-backs. I'd be surprised if you didn't score 2+ goals.

I think you’ll get chances too though given we are still making mistakes with the new system

Yeah but DCL can't score 1v1s.

Broja looks like he may be fit to be on the bench though so will see how that goes if he gets game time.

I think you’ll get on the scoreboard for sure

We had a good record under Ten Hag but when I think of Everton I usually think back to those 3 consecutive home draws under Ole and that loss at Goodison Park under Rangnick.

Only thing I'm not sure I agree on is maybe you bump Eriksen off the 2 deep since Amorim will be looking away from older/departing players and also he has to decide where to use Bruno.

    Onana/Bayindir

    Mazaraoui/Yoro
    De Ligt/Maguire
    Martinez/Shaw

    Amad/Antony
    Ugarte/Casemiro
    Bruno/Mainoo
    Dalot/Malacia

    Mount/Bruno
    Garnacho/Rashford
    Hojlund/Zirkzee

feels just as likely to me. Also possible Rashford is ahead of Zirkzee if Amorim wants to sell/loan him and bring in another striker who can run the channels and get into the box more when Hojlund is unavailable/resting, or just to challenge him.

If he's thinking about next year, I'd guess our depth chart looks like this:

    Onana/Bayindir

    Mazraoui/Yoro
    De Ligt/Maguire
    Martinez/Shaw

    Amad/Dalot
    Ugarte/DM
    Bruno or #8
    /Mainoo
    LWB/Amass

    AM or Bruno/Mount
    Garnacho/Rashford
    Hojlund/ST or Zirkzee

    and the big buys are:
    -An LWB
-An expensive attacking midfielder or a #8 depending on where Amorim wants to use Bruno,

    Smaller buy:
-A DM in his prime with some mobility for when Ugarte is out, assuming Casemiro doesn't stay for one final year, but really we need someone who can actually run (and tackle)

    Possible 1 out, 1 in:
-Maybe Zirkzee stays or goes and a new striker brought in. Maybe a big CB buy if Maguire goes.
-Maybe Maguire goes and the Brathwaite signing happens.

Also projecting Amass to be the backup LB, Antony and Eriksen gone and Casemiro leaving but one more year of Casemiro wouldn't shock me and maybe Amorim just won't rate Amass or will want him on loan for a year playing as a wingback first, presumably to whatever team in the Champo plans on playing 3 at the back and has some playing time at LWB to offer.

I don’t think Amorim sees Amad as a 10 or Shaw as a wingback.
I think it would be suicidal to play against established PL opposition with Amad at RWB, Shaw and Mazraoui are technical enough to play there. Starting at Arsenal with two players in defense not natural to those roles could see us ripped apart.

    Onana
    Mazraoui de Ligt Shaw
    Amad Ugarte Eriksen Dalot
    Mount Fernandes
    Højlund

I know we're shit but why is this not televised again? Feels like more than usual this year matches aren't shown. Really rediculous in 2024. I'll get it on Teletext.

This would probably been a Saturday 3pm kick off had we not been in the EL. All they have done is moved it because of that reason.

Mainoo will start this game, will be interesting to see if he is spending more time with the coach to train in his new role potentially as a 10? Nevertheless, I am sure he will start either way.

I also expect to see Zirkzee and Rashford back in the side with Hojlund rested.

We will see Amorim preferred starting XI vs Arsenal.

    Onana
    Mazraoui de Ligt Shaw
    Amad Ugarte Eriksen Dalot
    Mount Fernandes
    Højlund
He said in the post match that both Mount and Hojland were subbed because they were exhausted. No way either of them start when we play Arsenal three days after.
