Day 12 | England v Slovenia + Denmark v Serbia | France v Poland + Netherlands v Austria

Yep, that's the story tonight. A country of 2 million people.
And it's not just football. Look at basketball, handball, volleyball, cycling, skiing, skijumping, athletics and I could go on and on...

I think it's a combination of having a team of players used to playing in highly drilled systems and knowing exactly what's asked of them, suddenly being coached by a man who doesn't really have a clue what he wants them to do, and that same man never fecking shutting up about how much pressure there is on them.

Maybe. Maybe there has a been a different but valid reason for it happening over and over again, generation after generation.

Well Gareth Southgate is one huge reason, players being overhyped another and yes third maybe overreacting and making them feel bad and down…….i’m being harsh I know.

Who knows. But it's mad that it keeps happening with such good players. Even when it was loads of United players from a dominant club side, the England thing was tricky.

Yes, congratulations on being brilliant at everything Slovenia!

Yes, there has generally been better teams around and we play dour boring football for the majority of that time, especially in tournaments.

The only decent ones I can remember where the wc 2018 & euro 96 where iirc we played fast attacking football.

Flashscores gave Mainoo a 6.8 rating but palmer a 7.1? He literally got the lowest rating on the whole team.

I wasn't following during 94, but I think even the Italian fans were more forgiving of Baggio missing a penalty compared to Beckham's red card? Imagine if that was Beckham.

Baggio was exceptional until that moment. He single handedly took Italy to the final in that tournament. So, it's no surprise they were more forgiving towards him.

Most likely fixture IMO:

Spain - Random team from group E
Germany - Denmark
Portugal - Hungary
France - RTFGE

RTFGE - Slovenia
Austria - Turkey
Switzerland - Italy
England - Netherlands

Yeah other teams do get in the way I suppose.

Anyway it's a good problem to have. Ireland are utterly shite just now.

First time in their history Slovenia qualify for knock outs of major football tournament so historic movement for them and they fully deserved it over the three games.
Why? Zero wins, two goals and copious amounts of diving, feigning injury and timewasting. Tiny country or not, they're wank.

I think 6.8 was probably a fair score for Mainoo, I’m just completely mindblown that everybody else got more.

Stunningly bad Trippier got motm with a 7.8 and all the front 4 got over 7. Worst player ratings ever.

Because the 3 bigger countries all did the same vs them for the most part, bar the timewasting.

Mainoo changed the game when he came on.

Mainoo is an excellent young player & played well but he didn't change the game. Slovenia decided to sit deeper and play for a draw the second half as that's what they needed to qualify.

It depends on the 3rd places from which groups qualify. Now there's 3 choices:

1) 3rd from A,C,D,E qualify. England faces Netherlands.
2) 3rd from A,C,D,F qualify. England faces Netherlands.
3) 3rd from C,D,E,F qualify. England faces random team from group E.

Bottom line, if Hungary qualifies, England faces Netherlands.

Interesting. Basically it's England-Holland if Portugal don't lose to Georgia and Turkey don't lose to Czechs.

The Dutch were awful defensively today but I don't think England have enough zip and pace in the game to test them like Austria did so that would be a real 50/50 game imo as Memphis and Gakpo would get chances on the break.

Feels made for a Weghorst winner tbh.

Gareth Southgate. The Grey Man.

It's like when Moyes got the United gig and shat himself trying to play down expectations at every turn.

His players go out their instilled with his self-doubt and hesitancy.

England were looking very dangerous when Mainoo and Palmer came on. Thought they would score.

Fek Southgate looks so out of his depth in this interview.

Felt that Kane probably should have slipped Mainoo in at the end rather than going wide.

England could easily get knocked out by Swiss and especially Austria playing like this. The Netherlands would be a tight one aswell as they do have a bit more upfront and out wide than Slovenia do.
Sure thing, it's still a favourable side of the fixture key while all the other likely suspects have at least one very risky game before the final.

I suppose people aren't going on what they see on the pitch but what could be. You simply can't keep being so shite with that squad, it's baffling.

If Belgium wins group E, France will play one of the following: Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine.

Mainoo and Palmer should start next game - seemed like they had a good understanding between them. Our problems are Bellingham & Kane but Southgate won’t drop either of them.

Insane how Germany, France, Spain and Portugal (and Denmark) (and potentially Belgium) is in the same ladder.

England get an conparably easy road to the final

Maybe. Maybe there has a been a different but valid reason for it happening over and over again, generation after generation.

England have never actually been a footballing nation capable of continually pumping out quality players. They're always going to be prone to a duff generation.

2008 to 2016 they were actually just quite shit. The squad was full of mediocre players.

The previous golden generation was simply too preoccupied with club-rivalry while also being shoehorned into a system that didn't suit them.

I'm not really old enough to remember much before that, but as has been pointed out elsewhere, there's also just an overrating of some of the players from the past.
