Day 12 | England v Slovenia + Denmark v Serbia | France v Poland + Netherlands v Austria

Do Danes and Slovenia have to draw lots now as they've both drawn two games 1-1 and the other 0-0 so not sure how they're separated for 2nd and 3rd unless it goes down to yellow cards?

Went down to yellow cards

I doubt it’s much more overreacting than other ‘top’ nations who are expected to go far.

I don't doubt it at all. Been watching it happen for almost 40 years. It's all or nothing, and it creates huge pressure. Player after player and manager after manager hounded. No other country has underperformed with such regularity.

Build up just to knock down and it creates weight for the team to carry.

It’s position in the qualifiers, Denmark finished above Slovenia (in the same group as well).

It is yellow cards before that but both are on 6

I wasn’t trying to be sarcastic as I’m genuinely not in tune with this third place stuff. Congrats to you guys, enjoy it.

First time in their history Slovenia qualify for knock outs of major football tournament so historic movement for them and they fully deserved it over the three games.

England 2020.. dominant side who get to the final scoring at will.

Utd before last season, scoring loads more, better in defence, finished third and won a trophy.

Luke Shaw is the glue.

Stones “Everyone wants to beat us we have a target on our back”. Steady on lad, we’re not prime Brazil.

I always find this a strange view personally.

Do you imagine the scrutiny is any less in Brazil or Argentina during a tournament? Or Italy or Spain?

We are just a country that cares a lot about football.

They don't do scapegoats quite as regularly as ye do. No other media would do to Beckham what your media did. All part of the culture of impatience and blame.

Just look at the grief Bellingham gets on here for sub par performances.

This interviewer on ITV keeps saying about Palmer and Gordon coming on, but not how good Mainoo was. He has done it in two interviews with Kane and now Stones. Yet Mainoo is younger than either than them.

Yep, that's the story tonight. A country of 2 million people.

Pickford, Walker, Guehi, Stones were all fine.

Trippier, Rice, Foden and Saka were poor.

Gallagher, Bellingham and Kane were appalling.

Maybe it’s all a clever ruse to lull opposition into a sense of false security, knowing they’ve only got to get past a very predictable England side.

I think if you’re good enough you’ll show it and put in good performances no matter the pressure, they all play for big teams with a lot of pressure So it’s nothing new to them. The fact we ’underperform’ is more to overhyping than overreacting to poor performance in my opinion.

That's not really true. In the group stage, we drew 0-0 with Scotland and beat Czechia in 1-0 in a pretty drab match.

Our opener was a good 2-0 win vs Croatia though.

It's kind of impressive that with the amount of attacking talent they have, England barely even created a chance against this completely mediocre Slovenia team.

Oh well. I still have some slim hopes of Hungary going through but this was the big opportunity :(

Didn't Columbian fans literally kill a player for scoring and own goal?

Spain and their whistling is just as bad, they are just historically better than us. We aren't unique in as far as countries who love football in our scrutiny when things don't go well

I wasn't following during 94, but I think even the Italian fans were more forgiving of Baggio missing a penalty compared to Beckham's red card? Imagine if that was Beckham.

Watch without the doom and gloom of this forum’s weird eternal pessimists, it’s more fun. Deffo an improvement on the last match, heading in the right direction.
There's nothing weird about it we have hardly created a clear opportunity against Slovenia. Nothing about that suggested right direction, if that's right what's the wrong direction in terms of our passing and creation. We have qualified which is good but we have produced absolutely nothing to inspire confidence that we have the game to compete at the business end.

I think one feeds the other. It happens all the time. There must be a reason.

England won the group, unbeaten and look have found a few players who can do it.

Yep, they worship him, based on his career, not a headline.

They're equal on pts, gd, head to head, yellow cards and their qualifying, so it's actually decided solely based on Austria being ranked higher in the world rankings. Pretty crazy

I thought with the Colombian GK, that had something to do with the cartels. Didn't watch the ESPN 30/30 documentary on it yet.

Well Gareth Southgate is one huge reason, players being overhyped another and yes third maybe overreacting and making them feel bad and down…….i’m being harsh I know.

So how do they decide which 3rd placed team goes to which bracket?

It depends on the 3rd places from which groups qualify. Now there's 3 choices:

1) 3rd from A,C,D,E qualify. England faces Netherlands.
2) 3rd from A,C,D,F qualify. England faces Netherlands.
3) 3rd from C,D,E,F qualify. England faces random team from group E.

Bottom line, if Hungary qualifies, England faces Netherlands.

Denmark win on h2h from their qualifying group.

I think one feeds the other. It happens all the time. There must be a reason.

I think it's a combination of having a team of players used to playing in highly drilled systems and knowing exactly what's asked of them, suddenly being coached by a man who doesn't really have a clue what he wants them to do, and that same man never fecking shutting up about how much pressure there is on them.
