No, he wasn't. Falcao was signed a whole year later. Welbeck was considered expendable enough that he was sold on deadline day, without replacement. He saw himself as a striker, and LvG disagreed. That disagreement is what lead to him opting to leave. Could he have been a decent option to have out wide? Sure, but he didn't want to stay and be a decent option to have out wide, he wanted to go elsewhere and be a striker.
Nope and nope.

Literally the same day.

Darmian was bang average, but he was at least available most of the time. Rafael wasn't, and was also in decline. At age 25. Tony V had basically already replaced him as starting RB at that point. Darmian essentially replaced Rafael as back-up RB, even if that wasn't the intention originally.
If Darmian had been bang average it would have been an improvement, he was absolute dogshit. And people seem to forget he was quite injury prone the first 2 years here.

Valencia became first choice at RB long term because Darmian was so dogshit, the season before he only ended up there after Van Gaal basically put Rafael on ice and stopped picking him.

But anyway we're off topic, so if you want to continue this discussion no problem, but let's move it to another thread yes?

Agreed, Welbeck was actually even worse after leaving United, his highest ever league tally since leaving us was 6  his highest for us was 9.
Absolutely Darmian and Falcao were absolute dogshit for United.

Evans has done well. Says a lot about United that a guy who was only meant to be training and maybe play a few pre season games, and ended up given a one year contract is looking like the most reliable cb we have, one we deemed not good enough Ten years ago and was relegated last season.

The state of United eh?

Anyway happy for evans

Fantastic player to have around - not a reminder of the mentality we used to have but also a talented footballer in his own right. Like Ibra and Cavani, if only we’d signed him 10 years ago…

It doesn't make much sense though with Evans because we did have him 10 years ago. He was never anywhere as good in his position as Ibra and Cavani either.

He really wasn't, but I can't be arsed to have a discussion about how much of a mistake it was to sell average players who went nowhere after leaving.

It wasn’t an entirely serious post

He is slow to turn and react but he can still run with decent speed (I feel he is faster than Maguire). This guy has the real leadership!

Worst senior full back to play for United in the PL era.

It’s actually a mystery. His signature is to treat ball like hot potato when he played for us. Every time he got the ball, he would try his utmost best to get rid as early as possible. He apparently is capable of more. Probably due to LVG’s coaching?

Evans and Maguire should be the CB pairing for the next few games regardless of whether Mr Glass (Varane) is back or not.

Genuinely feel this would be the case with most players across mid table teams that the cafe calls average. If they were given a chance they'd likely outperform our high wage thief's simply on effort alone

Yeah get the ball pass it to whoever as soon as possible (usually whoever gave it to him), contribute nothing to the attack and be weak as piss in defence.

No idea what his problem was, he's looked decent enough back in Italy, maybe it was a psychological thing.

I wish he was younger. He is a leader on the pitch.

Still a bit annoyed Lvg got rid of him so soon.

Fergie's squad players > LVG's expensive flops

Several players have talked about LvG trying to coach their natural game out of them, asking them to play safer and be more conservative. Which tracks with the brand of football he had us playing, which was completely risk averse.

To this day I maintain that he broke several of our players with his nonsensical negative coaching

Yeah. I remember Evans said LVG taught him control the ball first always before next action. He thinks it’s something he benefits greatly even though he was shipped out by LVG.

He is doing okay, better than i imagined he would...but let's be honest every forward in the league would love playing against Evans/Maguire/Lindelof.

None of them command or own the field. As fans we are just grateful when they don't have an almighty feck up and present the opposition with a golden chance.

Gotta like the guy. He clearly cares about the club and we need more of that.
Agreed.
He strikes me as a very honest player who is well aware of his strengths and weaknesses. Of course he is getting on and does not have much pace.
But as a squad player he is fine.

What is his injury status after last international match? He picked up a few knocks.
Strange he's yet retired from his national team, when he's this injury prone and almost retired from club football; all while his NT doesn't do so well in hope of qualifying for any big tournament,

He’s proud of playing for his country, 102 caps so far

Easily the best CB available.

Goes about his business quietly has great organisation and exudes calmness.

He's bringing Maguire back into form as well.

Really impressed with Evans, I'd much rather he pair with Maguire than Varane at this moment.

He is nothing worse performer than our two so called best players. If anything, he is much better in last few games then them.

I honestly can't really slate Evans. He's a serviceable enough option against much weaker sides but should never in a month of fecking Sundays be playing against opposition as strong as City.

To be fair to both CBs today, they did ok. But how can they plug the holes at both fullbacks and have literally no midfield cover?

He was awful when he was younger and is even worse now. Positionally screws the back 4. It’s a joke he’s at the club.

Though he was decent today, not much he can do when there's a vacuum in front on him in midfield and the ice melt at left back.

But he wasn't brought in to play against City, he was brought in as an emergency backup. And he's done ok.
