Maguire | he stays!

Mitten saying he absolutely want to stay at United and fight for his place, and United isnt activly trying get him out, I think this isnt happening.
Totally agree Johny Evans will sign a 1 year contract probably on 50k per week so we will have more than enough depth at CB Maguire will play Cup games with Johny Evans and Victor Lindelof. Defensively we have enough, we can look for the next big thing next summer, need S Afrobat, and one other versatile striker, I’d still take J Felix on loan

I don't see 20m as a joke; I see Maguire's wages reflective to his quality as a joke.

No, his wages are not a 'daft' argument. Most players (most people) will not accept wage cuts, even if they're already rich. This obviously limits his transfer value because mid table teams (Maguire's level) cannot afford large transfer fees AND high salaries. Especially for an aging player with no sell on value.

Name me a player over 30 purchased by a mid table club for over 30m on over 180k pw? I'll wait...

In a sense, it’s easier and more complicated than that. It’s just a question of the needs and wants of three parties: United (what is the value of Maguire as a 4th CB vs the economical value of sales price plus wage riddance); Maguire (what is the value of 200k per week and being sub in CL games vs value of playing regularily and securing NT spot), and Potential Buyer (value of money for purchase plus wage vs a CB of Maguire’s potential and experience). And then it’s negotiation.

i would argue United’s hand is quite good here: if they sell Maguire, they need a fourth CB of a certain quality. If they needed a new super-CB, it would be great to sell Maguire to pay for part of the wages and price of say a Kim. But with Varane, Lisandro and Lindelöf as back up, that is not high on the list. And to buy a player good enough to be 4th choice for United, well, they could save some money selling Maguiredue to the salary, but not a lot. If Maguire/agent puahes for compensation, it makes more sense to keep him around as no 4.

It’s different for Maguire. If he stays at United, he will not play a big part, and his NT spot will be jeopardized. It’s also probably a bit of a blow to the self esteem to be demoted from captaincy and be an established squad option for a guy like him. If I were him, I’d be willing to sacrifice quite a bit of salary to avoid all that, but who knows. Either way, even if he desperately wants to leave, it’s in his interest to say he wants to stay, not to undermine his negotiating position. But in the end, he may have to choose between playing for an OK team at reduces aalary, or hanging around to collect wages and watch football games at OT.

A Potential Buyer won’t give a toss about his wages, they’ll see what is the most expensive package of Harry Maguire vs some other candidate of equal quality. If the package is to expensive, they move on, regardless ofwether it’s the wages or the club compensation that is tje biggest part of it.

Forced to guess, I’ll venture that Maguire will move to someone like WH for something like 25m plus some add ons (games played e.g.) and a reduced salary, and no compensation from Utd. But we’ll see.

We arent getting a replacement cheap.
He knows his role. If he is fine staying as 4th choice, he is probably better than signing a 4th choice.
Wages.. maybe 100k more than what we would give to a new signing.. 5m/year. Nothing for the club. Didn't work out .. we lose some money.

If he wants to go, he goes. If we get a great offer, he goes. If not, he stays on as a squad player, which is fine.

Gives us more time to look for a replacement.. We have other areas we can focus on now.

Maguire is entitled to wind down his contract. But if he thinks that a manager who plays a left back ahead of him in an injury crisis and strips him of the captaincy is really interested in him ‘fighting for his place’ he’s deluded.

He doesn’t fit ETH’s style of play and it could well be that Evans will be higher up the pecking order making him effectively 6th choice.

He doesn't care about playing. Maguire knows that if he refuses to leave, the club won't be able to sign another centre-back(FFP/cashflow issues, Glazer apocalypse...). In that case, he's still going to play occasionally.

Maguire cares the most about wages, and he's not getting Utd wages(200k) anywhere else. It also looks to me that he really likes being associated with the prestige of a club like Manchester United - it's pretty important to him. I can sense some narcissism and snobbism from him.

West Ham with a big Swag bag after selling Rice for extortionate fee go around low balling everyone for their players……might be a difficult transfer market for WH and Moysey!
Oh no this applies to everyone who seems to want to lowball us for any of our players whereas we are getting that 'united tax' when we bid for potential signings. Nonsense.

I don't see a way back for him. Most fans have made their minds up about him over the past two seasons and EtH would rather play Shaw at cb than Maguire so.... the writing is really on the wall and i'd be amazed if he doesn't realise that.

Southgate has already said it isn't great that he's not playing regularly so there's that too.

Yeah hopefully Southgate's words not gonna call them threats could make him take action

Me neither, but players can always improve.

Varane won't play twice a week (even if he's not injured) so he's just backing himself to overcome Lindelof for pretty regular game time if he stays.

IF he was capable of playing that high line Erik is implementing then wouldn’t have any problem keeping him whatsoever but not seen evidence

If we're talking about Maguire. He wont. His problem is not skill but mindset.

The last 2 years could be smoothen out if only he goss back to the basic, cut out rampant interceptions, refrain from hogging the ball too much, keep it tight keep it simple and maybe his shortcomings could be minimalized.

Most great defenders has their own weakness and uses their wisdom to work it out with something else. Maguire is too ... Not wise to work his out.

Thinking of maguire and his slow ass (both mentally and physically in the field) gives me nightmare in a high line. Even just during Shaws brief cb run there were so many instances he covered a thru ball/chance behind the back line that slow ass maguire would've been nowhere near. I do believe we would be best served by just having a youth defender who is more the cb type that eth wants vs an extended run with maguire back there

Yeah give Kambwala/Mengi a shot

I know it's only a friendly but McTominay getting the armband over him tonight kinda shows what ETH thinks of him.

If EtH had given the armband back to Maguire, the press would have called it indecisive management and written a bunch of negative stories off the back of it.

McT with the captaincy is less controversial because it gives the media nothing new to write. Maguire has already lost the armband and now nothing's changed.

And if the armband was taken off him to reduce the pressure, it wouldn't make sense to pile the same pressure back on.

I'd hope everyone on the Cafe would see £20 million as a joke.

The counter argument about his high wages is also daft imo, as when does the selling club care about wages, its not United's problem.

To answer your question, I think around 30-35 would be reasonable, the English tax exists for everyone not just the Top 6.

I'd take anything above 20 million. The wages are definitely part of the problem for united. They're paying them.

In his situation I actively wouldn't want the armband at this stage. I'd prefer to concentrate on my own performances.

Fair. Honestly the armband isn't that important really. I doubt players care that much about getting it.

As captain theres lots of shit you have to do off field too like fines, tickets for squads families and other random responsibilities I remember watching an ex player talk about the hassle of being captain

I think in this time and age, a Club such as United will have staff dedicated to the shores you mention. I don’t see Bruno arranging tickets for other players’ families

Well, I do think it matters to him, and I don't think he is not affected by having McTominay as captain before him. He is so convinced in his ability and leadership that borders on unintended arrogance.

Another game, another instance of Maguire chaotic play. He is completely overmatched under high press and is mistake-prone. Above all, he fits in this system like a square peg fits into a round hole.

We need to go back to West Ham and revive this negotiation. For everybody’s sake, Maguire needs a new start somewhere else.

I'd say it's 50/50. I agree - most won't care about it but there are those who do and it's usually the ones who have a certain standing or status within the team (leader, seniority, one of the best, etc.).

Also not having the armband or wearing it in a temp capacity or one-off basis is one thing but the humiliation of having it and then have it taken away (publically) due to losing your place is a lot for some to deal with - moreso if you didn't feel like it was warranted etc.

A lot of these footballers have huge egos (and they need a certain level of thick-headedness to deal with what they have to) and i'm sure none of this is pleasant for Maguire, no matter what his beliefs are.

Yeah negotiate a price which suits both parties

Should've accepted WH's offer.

After last night, that much has become clear. We’re caught in a situation where we may be trying to justify the cost that took to acquire him, so we clearly overrate him. He’s not good, and not a good fit for this system.

He needs to move away from United too. His weaknesses will continue to be under the spotlight of playing in this club, and is another blunder away from completely botching his footballing mentality.

We should cut our losses and move on. Nothing good will come out of this.

Yeah the cost of what we paid for him is definitely hurting us now in terms of selling
