Of course it will be.
He won't go to Chelsea i imagine, as he'd be competing with others for his spot. Plus if it's just on the CL for this season that he bases a decision on, then thats a bit stupid.
Plus don't you think ten Hag has already discussed the Chelsea links with him? He'll want assurances that if Barca pay him what he's asking, does he definitely want to come to us or is there a chance he'll go there
True! Im not convinced him and Jorgingho as a pair works, be fighting to be the midfielder who reveives the ball from the centre back.

I'm leaning towards him signing for Chelsea at this point, but I hope I'm wrong. Just feel like he desperately doesn't want to join us but is close to accepting that he'll have to leave Barca.
Disagree. Chelsea is a red herring and he’s never said he doesn’t want United specifically, he’s only maintained his desire to stay at Barca, most likely because he would like his 17m repaid.

It’s going to be;

A) Wage cut and stay

B) Payout and leave

They are clearly trying to force the situation more and more
Although he could, and would have every single right too do so, give them the middle finger and say i'm staying on my current contract, and theres not a thing you can do about it.

The chances of that are slim as he literally would become a bench warming CB with sporadic playing time i'd say

Add to the fact that for the past few weeks, maybe even over a month, he's not even said publicly that he wants to stay. It's just been the same reports that say "Frenkie wants to stay". Theres nothing from him thats mentioned that

With Chelsea close to signing Kounde, maybe they need to hurry up to find a solution

I think tier one is saying Kounde has been told by Xavi he’s first choice CB and he’s happy to wait..

Chelsea look out of that one. Wait for what though?

All positive in this saga mind. Can see it is starting to hot up again now

To be fair, I think their first choice midfield 3 would be Pedri, Gavi and Busquets.

Pedri and Gavi will be future of Barca/Spain, Busquests is still irreplacement as DM.

If FDJ want to stay, he may have to try his luck as CB (but they also bought Kounde), or as squad rotation/backup for Pedri Gavi.

Pretty sure Barca have hijacked Kounde from Chelsea and will be signing him. So thats Raphinha and Kounde that they'll have taken right from under Chelseas nose, all whilst being supposedly skint!

He'll be thrilled to be playing Centre-back on a reduced wage for his dream club.

The centre back treatment could go away with signing a new re-negotiated deal. There's no reason he can't be an option in midfield for them, they are just trying to push him out by playing him at CB.

All that said, the likelihood of him signing on reduced terms yet again seems miniscule when he can just wait it out on his current contract and hope Barcelona pay up for him to leave.

I think this one will all go down to whether it financially makes sense to pay De Jong what is owed. If De Jong is owed such a big chunk of deferred wages, you might as well pay those over a longer period whilst he remains a big asset for you on the field. Why would you a big him a big proportion of that same money, only for him to be playing elsewhere?

You're correct, but ultimately it will come down to United and Barca to pay it, and they will probably end up splitting it. United will have factored it into what they've offered Barca/what wages they can offer De Jong. Seemingly a transfer fee was agreed with each club thinking/hoping the other would pay De Jongs deferred wages. It's just a game of chicken now, and ultimately a compromise will be reached. If United have to pay De Jong an extra few million, Barca will have to accept a lower transfer fee. Or it may be done the other way around for tax purposes, United pay Barca more, Barca give the extra to cover De Jong. It would be nice to have the deal wrapped up sooner but also Barca need the deal done as much as we do, and financially they have overstretched and desperate to raise funds, so I'm glad we're not caving in and are waiting for them to concede.

I am mostly trying to stay away from this thread for the last month or so. Are we supposed to believe that Frenkie is truly desperate to stay at the club that pretty much does everything they can to push him out of the door? I find it bizarre that someone can feel so unwanted yet is fighting to stay. So what is holding up the deal at the moment? Is it just the unpaid wages? Barcelona buying players left and right makes me feel they are confident about shipping him out no? If someone can summarize the current situation It will be much appreciated.

You know what i've noticed... it's really only the Barca mouthpieces that have mentioned the Chelsea links. No English journo close to Chelsea or not have mentioned it. Romano and Romero have mentioned it once or twice, but not as much recently
It's always those that are connected to Barca or pump out their propaganda that mention it and the only English journos that pick it up quote the Spanish sources then add their own BS.

Does seem to me like Barca are desperate to push it out there

One thing to come out of this saga is just how much of a joker Graham Hunter is.

Watching his embarrassing emotional meltdown on talksport in defence of Barcelona, its noticeable that he tries to obscure what Barcelona's position is by denying that they won't pay his deferred wages but saying its a 'regular negotiation'.

It's been reported that they offered 3.5m out of the 17m which means that he's not necessarily lying, just sweeping up for them the fact they want to only pay part over an extended payment schedule.
Yeah I watched half the video wondering which of the guys in the studio was the Spanish football expert before I realised it was the emotional ranting weirdo on the phone. Also the fact that Danny Murphy was lapping it up and jizzing at his every word left me feeling a bit dirty after I’d watched. ABU cnuts the lot of them.

Everything said today is at complete odds with his own statements around his best playing position. If he was to stay now he'd be locking in a permanent wage reduction to become a bench rotation CB.

It's borderline parody now.

I bet they haven't even spoken to him yet about the agreed deal and what to do with his wages, the uber cnuts they are will make it uncomfortable as feck for him, and then take the meeting, once they believe they are in a position of power. They'll offer the extra 8.5 mil that United added to the deal, and not a cent more. At that point, knowing he's second choice and that Xavi sees him as the new Mascherano, if he has any self respect he'll take the money and run... and Barca know it.
The tour now seems like Barca's method of gaining an upper hand in the eventual negotiations, and they are playing it well, scummy as feck, but well.

is this really true?

always thought that was just Woodward PR
It's not fecking true at all. We've spent similarly to City and have nothing to show for it and we haven't generated anything significant through player sales either. Woodward was good at selling the brand that SAF and Gill left behind. A badger in clown makeup could sell the 2013 edition of Manchester United to sponsors. Idiot didn't have the foresight to increase - or even just maintain - that brand value, though. We've been passed by multiple clubs in terms of revenue since Woodward took over, and Liverpool look likely to overtake us within the next few years as well. The guy is a fecking fraud and should have been fired years ago. The fact that Barca have somehow found bigger idiots to run their club doesn't change a thing.

Let's hope future Barca players take note of this and not be stupid enough to defer wages.

Can't remember the last time a player got disrespected like this by his club. It's. getting embarrassing and sad and I can't understand why de Jong is still there. I get the issue with the wages they own him, but surely he could sue them or something and get what he's owed, since Barca seems to have the money now considering they are whoring out the club to sponsors.

Frenkly, Mr Shankly this position I’m in (CB)
It doesn’t pay my way and it corrodes my soul

I think ultimately FDJ and Barca will agree to some sort of compromise on the deferred wages. FDJ did agree to current deal after all. I wish Barca and him would sort it out quickly as current stand off suits nobody.

Has FDJ ever played CB before? I don't think he is in anyway suited to that position whatsoever. Really feels like Barca are insulting him now, surely he can't stay after they screwed him around so much

The thing is its fine for them to do this now in pre-season but once the season starts if its like the first half of last season and he's sitting on the bench I doubt the supporters will care for the messing about. They'll want the best players on the pitch if its going to get them points and closer to Madrid. And that would put the pressure on the manager and higher ups.
Yeah I don’t think the Barca fans will care that much because Frenkie is competing with their beloved biscuits, and a La masia prospect for his position. In that scenario Frenkie is an outsider, not one of them. He’ll quickly be forgotten when he signs for United.

Wonder if van Gaal has publicly told him he needs to be playing regularly to get into the dutch team this winter yet.

If he was to stay now he'd be locking in a permanent wage reduction to become a bench rotation CB.

He'd either be on his regular wage, looking at being a rotation choice at CB, or he goes to ten Hag and plays in his best position.

The 3rd option is that he fools himself into thinking a wage reduction will make Xavi reconsider him as a CM, but feck me that'd be some gamble with the prime years of your career.

Barca have played it well, he has to leave, he may well even be forced to ask for a transfer.
I do feel a bit sorry for the poor lad, get swindled out of a load of cash, else risk the prime of your career... not really what he had in mind when he chose to join Barca whilst the cream of the European elite chased his signature.

fully agree again. Tour was the perfect time for this as well. It's a "fresh start to look at the squad". No one believes this move half way through a season if he's seen to be vital as a creator of goals. It's a new season, fresh signings, "oh i really love the work he does as CB". Then Laporta comes in with the "you're a bench CB, your wages are unsustainable, Xavi has told you this, either cut wages or seek terms with MUFC"

Being a financial behemoth while footballing irrelevant is no easy task

well, it kind of is actually

from a marketing point of view, football brands retain their customers better than almost anything

a decade of being shite isn't enough for the majority of fans to stop paying

Some posters have already said that quite a few Barca supporters are already none to fussed if he goes. He's not really special to them and they don't actually care either way
