What was the point of saying that he'd move to the USA, England or elsewhere to win trophies if he was that concerned about the transfer ban's effect on Atletico? Usually these things are the other way around, a player makes noises about how much he loves the club and wants to stay but won't hesitate to move on should the opportunity arise.

Only Griezmann, his agent, Atletico, and United know what is going on. Whether his tweet is the final word and he is staying or whether he is helping Atletico by saying he wants to stay and they eventually give into the loads of cash Ed is presenting. Everything else is speculation. Even if he signs a new deal there is no way it would have come close to what United can offer. I bet deep down their crying over losing out on €100m.

See. I added more speculation.

Are you claiming you're ITK? I'm offended.

OMG. No

Learn how to take a compliment ffs

I am saying when people (NOT YOU) have a go at someone because a deal did not happen despite the efforts of the signing club its not the fault of the "ITK". All the "ITK" can do is get a reliable source that the signing is in the process etc. Their logic (negativity vampires) would dictate that he had some sort of influence over it. "You said he was definitely signing, ha ha you are a fake blah blah" when they are stupid to think anything is definite when people can change their minds last minute as seems to be the case here.
Ah gotcha, apologies!

ITK here: I have it on good authority that Antoine Griezmann will NOT be joining Shrewsbury Town despite all the rumours. But his twitter feed means nothing. "There is no deal lots of bla bla bla", remember?

Richest in the world, one of the best (if not the best) managers in the world, back in the Champions League via a European Trophy, plus 3 other pieces of silverware in the last 12 months, Pogba, Rashford, Martial, Mkhitaryan, De Gea (looks like he is staying), Herrera, Valencia and Eric Bailly to build a team around.

The situation the club is in, is an exciting one. Give your head a good wobble and realise that (possibly) missing out on one player doesn't make us Liverpool.
Yes we are also 6th in the league and that is not a one-off season, year before that we were 5th, before that 4th and before that 7th. For a club like United that is very poor.

Despite the names you list, we struggle to play good football, we struggle to win. We are in the CL because won the EL and in fairness it was one of the weakest Europa leagues I have seen in years, if we would have had it as tough as Liverpool (facing us, Dortmund, Villareal and Sevilla in the final) I highly doubt we would have made it seeing how much we struggled versus the likes of Anderlecht and Celta. Next year we will be in the CL I don't know how we are going to fair against better teams, my guess is not very well based on the fact Mourinho has been unable to defeat most off the teams above us ( that one off good performance in the win versus Chelsea islike a purple patch).

If you think the club is in a good spot, you just haven't being paying attention. Being the richest club in the world is very nice for the owners filling their pockets but means shit all if we don't use it properly to strenghten the team. If I look at what is available on the market and the names we are linked with I don't know why I should expect any progress next season at all. We seem to be buying poor quality players and overpaying for them, poor strategy to improve as a club.

From a footballing perspective the club is being managed very poorly since SAF left. The results we get in the league reflect that mismanagement.

I also wouldn't know why Mourinho still deserves the patch of best manager in the world. He was firred last year at chelsea for the bad results, this year he finished 6th in the league whilst he invested £150m in the squad. And winning the EL is not a great feat if you consider our budget is about 10 times bigger than our opponents. To illustrate it, our Pogba cost more than the entire team of Ajax together both in wages and transfer fee. And Pogba actually seems to be one of the better investments if you consider our other players, I'd say we are getting very little for our money from them.

When one of the better players in the market than decides he isn't going to United and you see City strenghtening left and right with very good players. Then all in all, no I'am not very excited about United's situation at all.

You might want to look at City's trophy haul this season, and then have a look at Utd's - the team you apparently support.

Hint - they've won nothing, we've got multiple trophies.

Big feck, they weren't even participants in 2 out of the 3 trophies we won and finished 3 places above us in the league.

Not that I agree with much of @redpanther wrote, I just hate it when people go "oh but we won 3 trophies" for the sake of it.

Fair point. So how about comparing with Rojo who sustained the same injury in the same game. At Stockholm, Rojo was on crutches and treading very gingerly. Zlatan meanwhile... Anyway, let's not derail this thread.
I'll briefly comment, we're all different, overcome injuries differently. I have no doubt Zlatan is special. A fast recovery doesn't mean a quality recovery.

Yes we have won the league cup and the EL which City didn't even compete in because they were in the CL, roll out the red carpet, best team in the world coming through... Don't use those trophies to paper over the cracks that clearly are there. It is the PL title and CL trophy we should be competing for.

City had a very bad season but they seem to fixing the mess they are in. Something which United just doesn't look capable of doing. They also won a PL title and didn't finish outside the top 4 in the last years we have been struggling to get in the top 4.

And yes I support United, doesn't mean I support every decision the current management makes like a blind fool. I'am allowed to be critical when I feel things are going shit up. If you decide to have a rose tinted view off things and are happy with the shite football we produce, than that is your right but I expect better from United.

Fair play to him contacting Utd to inform them of his decision after the CAS ruling. I believe he would have come had the transfer ban not been upheld

Obviously disappointed but not nearly as disappointed as the rest of you guys. Very good player but we'd be shoehorning him into a formation which would fail to get the best out of him.

I'm not sure how you can possibly come to this conclusion in June no less. We do have some problems which need fixing; even Chelsea do. Chelsea finished 10th the season before and I'm sure after that season, even their fans couldn't believe they'd be champions. So I'm very sound on our ability to make progress next season.

Fair play to him if he's staying at Atleti because they'll be in the shit otherwise. That's a player I'd like to sign in the future! Someone like Costa would just do one

City are seen to be fixing their problems every summer, you really need to wait and see.
Maybe you should go read Citys 15/16, their 14/15 etc threads or the threads of everyone they've signed to see how giddy this forum gets over them.
It's June 2. Calm down. Who knows who we have wrapped up pending holidays etc

He has scored 20+ goals the last three seasons.

We would have played him in whatever Jose considers is his best position. Other players would have to adjust or sit on the bench.

Has the club made any official statement about the transfer situation or is the assumption that "sources at United" are true reports?
It was clearly briefed. And it's clear that it's straight from the top brass considering Simon Stone were among those reporting it.

Whoever it is, can't be anything but underwhelming at this point.

Do we really want to buy him next summer? Are we supposed to keep a place open for him in the team and suffer in the interim? This could be an opportunity. For example, we could buy Sanchez for half of Griezmann's price AND get a striker at the same time. It would probably be better overall, since Sanchez is around the same level of Griezmann and we can replace Ibra at the same time.
Fair point. I don't know whether we would still buy him next summer. It's possible, but again, it would turn on many factors. Do we qualify for the Champions League again next year? Who do we buy this summer? Do any of the current players (who play the same / similar position to Griezmann) improve significantly? Does Griezmann sign a new contract? Does Griezmann maintain his high level of play? Does Griezmann sustain a significant injury? It goes on and on.

Rest assured, Jose won't put all of his plans on hold for a year. He'll have known that this was a possibility, and will have other plans. Significant money will be spent and the team will be improved.

So we should just buy the guy Athletico Madrid were gonna replace Griezy with, right? I mean Lacazette will probably be worth 100m in 2 years, let's get him for whatever he was gonna go to AM for, plus the obligatory Man United interest fee of at least 10% more on top.

The deal may of well hinged on Griezmann being able to be replaced, if he intends to stay now breifing the media would be normal before Griezmann or Atletico do.
If it hinged on that he is a massive bellend coming out with being ready to move on and whatnot.

It's inconsistent with suddenly staying put without question after the ban is upheld.

When someone displays different degrees of loyalty inside two weeks you can't interpret them as loyal.

We are not willing to stump up the whole release clause in one go, Atlético (reasonably) won't entertain anything else and Griezmann isn't willing to throw a tantrum to change that.

The only thing that can change that is us deciding to pay the full amount upfront, but we will only decide that after securing other targets and knowing the damage.

Move on, nothing will happen here until we finalise a couple of deals.
