If athletico have rejected a staggered transfer and demanded the release clause all up front then we'd have very little cash available up front for other signings. Ie no fabinho/perisic etc. Nobody is going to sell players without a decent percentage of the fee paid immediately since they wouldn't be able to replace the player.
