A Bit Wordy
Just so I don´t misunderstand you, you are talking about a 4-3-3 formation with a 3 man center midfield and Kagawa as the offensive spear head of the CM, right?
This could actually work, if he gets enough defensive cover from the other two. Kagawa´s least impressive ability is his tackling, both defensive and offensive. As AM he finds a way to compensate that, because his enourmous mobility and anticipation allows him to actually foresee and evade 1v1 situations. He has an extreme good eye for space and likes to push into it. That makes him such a good player in the hole, because he finds spaces even in positions, where the opposing defense is the thickest.
However, in a CM without enough defensive cover or just one partner (in a 4-2-3-1) he is actually forced to take tackles or otherwise he rips a huge hole in their own defensive formation. That is why he is wasted in a two men midfield and IMO a worse option than Cleverly or Anderson.
We'll have to be flexible and see how we can best use Kagawa without compromising our strengths elsewhere.
Let's begin with the assumption that Rooney is outta here. I'm not so sure now that's going to happen, but it's a better bet he'll go than he'll stay. At this point only Chelsea seem to be serious about Rooney and if they are, I'd like to rip Mata out of Jose's grip. And if we do, we may come out the winners in that deal. But I digress.
With Roo gone, I see no problem with Kagawa in the middle of the 3 in a 4231, provided it's Fellaini and Carrick behind him -- NOT the woeful, pie-eating Ando or the slight-of-build Cleverley. Maybe if Fletcher returns to glorious form. But you're right that if Kagawa is forced to contribute defensive duties he's not the man for this job. He wouldn't be as reckless as Scholes in the tackle, but probably about as effective.
I can see Moyesey experimenting with a 433 against weaker opposition this season with Kags in the middle of the orchestra, as you rightly sniffed out. Who knows what would come of it, but I'd like to see or new manager try a few different ideas out to see what gets the most of the squad.
If we did bring in Fellaini to partner with Carrick in the back 2 of the 5 man midfield, I don't see why we wouldn't allow Kagawa to roam about directing traffic up the pitch. Assuming, of course, our wingers are doing their job -- which for the most part they didn't last season.
It's a shame Rooney hasn't embraced what is so painfully obvious, that with his ability and his deteriorating ability to accelerate past defenders he really would be ideally suited to this role. Fergie knew this day would come to pass and picked up Kagawa a season before Roo went into "I want to be King" meltdown. At any rate, Kagawa is here and he's already shown us great stuff as a last third passer and scorer of tidy goals. I'd like to see whether he can hit the kind of shot that Modric scored on us last season. If Kags can add that club to his bag, oh my fukking God.
