Yves Bissouma / Signs for Spurs

It's clear that Rice is the player Ole wants and he's going to wait for him like he did with Sancho. It's a damn shame though because there are lots of other good options out there, this guy being one of them.
How is that clear at all? There’s nothing at all to suggest that Declan Rice is the one midfielder we want in the way Sancho was our main wide attacking target.
Good god, what does that shite even mean?
It’s hardly the Da Vinci code. If you stop yelling at those clouds you might be able to work it out.

I'm surprised nobody has moved for him, he's so good positionally and for us I think he'd address the holding role for us while being good enough on the ball for when we play low block teams and need to recycle the ball quickly and consistently.

Good god, what does that shite even mean?

It means he was jolly good old bean.

Good player and I rate him. But Brighton would want Ben White money for him wouldn't they? Not sure if he is worth that.

Didn’t watch the entire game but he looked a different class for much of what I saw, winning the ball and springing them forward very well.

Seems to me that he does like to get forward when they break and support the attack, not sure we would want that here and if we would prefer a sitting disciplined player to break up opposition attacks as the primary role?

Would like to see him sit back and just be a destroyer and distribute from deep for 90 mins.
There’s a real player in there me thinks.

I agree and in fact I’ve been consistently more impressed by Bissouma than I have with Rice.

I think the latter is massively overrated.

What makes you think Ole is dead set on Rice?

We don't need a player who will sit fulltime IMO. I'm not sure why that type of thinking has crept into the minds of many fans. What I believe the club want in a prospective new midfielder (whether that be a more defensive minded one or a more adventurous one) is to have the ability to provide a box to box threat and also to be versatile to show discipline positionally when needs require. Bissouma is someone that fits the profile and could be deployed next to a more adventurous midfielder to provide defensive balance.

Exactly, he's adept at dropping in when the opposition have the ball and holding his position but he can also drive it forward and pass to a good level, in tough games he'd be more disciplined but in a lot of our games he'd be a good on the ball partner for a creative #8 when we want to keep the tempo up and the pressure on a lot of the low block teams we play.

Doesn’t the bolded describe Fred and McTominay exactly though? That’s why many think we need an actual out and out DM, or one that are far more effectively defensively as the primary requirement.

What many don’t want is to add to the list of players we have that are ‘not quite a DM’

You say Bissouma could be partnered with a more offensively minded midfielder, could that player be Pogba?

I ask because its a popular opinion on the caf that it’s impossible to partner Pogba in a midfield two. Something I disagree with.

Ole has said that Varane gives us the option to use different tactics. Does it mean Pogba in a two man midfield against certain opposition?

No, they are both positionally poor defensively, Bissouma is very good in this respect.

No, there's not a midfielder alive that could consistently cover for Pogba in a 2.

This is where I disagree with much of the caf opinion on this.

How can two midfielders who are primarily box to box provide more cover than a true DM (who is mobile) and Pogba.

I think the bolded is a huge exaggeration, particularly with a higher line provided by an improved centre back pairing which includes Varane.

I think this is Exactly what Ole is planning. No way Ole is looking to make Paul best paid player to rotate him with Rashford off the left.

The bolded does describe Fred and McTominay as far as profile goes. But if we want to challenge the best teams in Europe then we need to upgrade on at least one if not both, because I don't believe either gets anywhere close to the best midfields in Europe. That's the issue with both players, they aren't good enough to propel us to where we aspire to be.

Pogba could play next to Bissouma in a 2 man midfield, but would have to take responsibility of his defensive zone against top quality teams. Against the lesser sides, Bissouma, along with the 2 CBs have the capability to provide the necessary defensive balance without Pogba over exerting himself defensively.

What we need is a midfielder who will provide defensive stability against the quality teams and then also provide a box to box threat against the so called cannon fodder. Bissouma is showing potential to do just that along with Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco. Both can cover ground quickly too, which is something that's quite important if the plan is to sacrifice defensive stability for goals.

Allegri and Deschamps constantly made sure there are 2 other midfielders in there with him, Mourinho and Ole have shunted him around constantly because he isn't suited to the responsibilities of playing in a midfield 2, he dallies on the ball too often and loses track of his defensive tasks. I don't care who our CB's are or who the other midfielder is, it'll never work for any length of time.

They myth's continue. The ONLY reason Ppgba hasn't worked in a 2 for us because we didn't have a good enough nor compatible starting center half pair. The notion he can't play with any dm in a 2 is stupid in the extreme.
Ignoring the purile insults I'm willing to bet it's the case, lets see who is right.

Today was the first game I watched of him where I thought yeah he could eventually be one of the best players in his position in the league. He’d be a poor sitter or partner for Pogba. Mobile Box to box who can muck in yeah. Could become better than the two we have? Sure, if he gets loads of games in a better team who knows.

Why are we not in for this player? Seriously?

He's everything we need to complete the midfield: PL proven, pressing, stamina, strenght, tackling, positioning, interceptions, technique, passing (both short and long range). Plus pace and acceleration as well. Not to mention relatively cheap price.

He can easily play as the sole CDM/DLP with Pogba and Fernandes ahead of him. Easily.

Nahh, it's a shit way of speaking and I'm of a generation that uses that sort of language (just about).
You’re right, it’s very cringey

Yeah I agree we can improve upon Fred and McTominay and can see the benefit in that.

In regard to Pogba playing that position though I don’t really think a box to box player is what we should be looking for in a partner for him, which is what I was sort of eluding to on my original post about Bissouma, in the hope that he can play a more restricted role and do the necessary when playing alongside Paul.

So you think Ole is hoping to keep him in order to rotate on the left?

Bissouma could play the sitting role comfortably if required to do so because his defensive game is strong IMO. Don't mistake his ability to play in a box to box role as a sign that he can't play in a more disciplined manner. He's a defensive box to box midfielder who provides tactical flexibility both defensively and offensively.

Looked at him today and thought, player, he’s cool and calm in possession, fast and strong in the tackle, reads the game beautifully and athletic enough to get around the pitch with ease. Amazing what a new hairstyle can do for you but may make Pogba insecure..

When I first saw him play I thought he wasn't very defensively aware, but he played a lot as a straight DM for Brighton last year and I was really impressed. He's improved an awful lot in the last couple of years and is now well capable of playing either box to box or as a pure DM which is exactly what Man Utd's success in the 90s involved - Ince, Keane, Butt...

I don't necessarily buy that there's a player out there who's good enough to play on his own behind Bruno and Pogba against a top team but I certainly think this guy could be good enough to do it against smaller teams (particularly if Varane fits in well). The fact Bissouma would also hopefully be able to step in as an upgrade in the McFred box to box partnership would be a great bonus too.

Obviously the transfer window is not over yet... but Brighton keeping this guy for another year is the best 'signing' they could have made this summer. Looked certain he would leave at one point.

Tonight's performance wasn't anything new, just reaffirms his quality. Really good player.

I'd say that's fairly obvious: people want a midfielder who can play in a two with Pogba (behind Bruno). And that would definitely have to be a proper disciplined sitting midfielder. Unless you can buy Kimmich or Verratti. Or resurrect Roy Keane.

I think people are over egging the performance against Watford, a newly promoted side.
