That is more the point, we have been targeting supposedly experienced or players with PL experience, so now it is someone who is another new to the country, young, needs guidance. We needed a leader at the back.
 
dont know much about him, but you have to wonder why barca are happy to let him leave
 
I don't mind Mina, any defender that can play 30+ games and not get injured is an upgrade, saying that, if we are only signing one player, i'd prefer a right winger.

The criteria for the type of defender we need keeps changing based on who we're rumoured to be interested in.

The problem is none is available to transfer to us. And realistically, we still need someone there regardless since Rojo, Jones and Bailly have been sicknote. That leaves us with Lindelof Smalling (Smallling is injured) as primary healthy CBs. Does it look assuring? Moving out one of the RoJones and getting similar quality that can stay fit may not be ideal, yet can be a good step forward.

We do need a leader but when you look at the market, there's not many experienced and quality centre backs available. Alderweireld would be a good buy but Spurs are demanding way too much.
 
Strange signing, if we do end up going through with it. I see no point in spending money on yet another relative gamble at CB, given that Mourinho has already had two attempts at that without getting anywhere. If we can't bring in someone who's closer to a "sure thing" we should focus on other, more pressing parts of the squad.

If we do get Mina, I fully expect him to end up on the list of "deadwood" the next manager has to clear out before we can be expected to challenge.
 
Atleast Castles says we've been scouting him since 2016 and Jose prefers him over Maguire.

Maybe it is a smokescreen for Alderweireld. It really doesn't make any sense. Mina might have potential but we have 2 defenders in the same position. I said we should've bought Bonucci instead of Lindelof last season. I can't believe we might make the same mistake again. Alderweireld isn't the best CB in the world but I'd take him over Maguire and Mina if it came down to those three.
 
Said this in the transfer tweets, but...He's not my first choice, but when you think Barca HAVE to sell him because they bought Malcom and Arthur - the fee will at least be reasonable. You can't say that about Maguire or Alderweireld. Also people saying we're signing him off the WC, how do we know that? we could have easily been scouting him at Palmerias.
 
Thank goodness people on a football forum know better than one of the most successful managers in the game.

I was all set to trust Jose on whoever we buy, but now I'm all turned around on the topic.

I also prefer Mina over Maguire. Why? Because I saw him beat Maguire to a header in the WC.

Its increasingly clear that the board is only willing to sanction major outlays for youngish players. The problem with that is you end up where Arsenal ended up after 2004: with a team of potential but no experience to help it find its footing during the tough times.

The few Premier League winners we have in our squad are ageing, if we don't start winning big trophies in the near future soon we won't have anyone in our squad who knows how to navigate the title run in. Then what do we do? We need leaders to help us get it over the line.
 
I know nothing about this bloke, apart from his decent WC . However, it worries me that Barcelona are looking to sell him after only signing him in January.

There are guys like Manolas at Roma and Benatia who wouldn't cost that much and would surely like one last big contract before they retire.
 
Still think Alderweireld is our main target. We've gone pretty public with the Maguire / Mina interest, I think we could sign Mina tomorrow if we really wanted him.

Maguire is more difficult, but I can't see Leicester getting more than 60m for him after this point, he's seen as a national hero right now.
 
Let’s get another average defender to go with the other 5 average defenders we already have.....this club should be banned from making any transfer deal until someone is in place who knows what the feck they’re doing.

Jose apparently gave his transfer list to Ed months ago as if Yerry fecking Mina was on it....waste of time.

I'm guessing its the same way we did business last season by negotiating concurrently for Morata and Lukaku, no one expected us to end up with Lukaku but we did. Its a good way to maintain leverage and not waste time with someone trying to drag us to the deadline and extort a fee out of time crunch.

I have no idea where this notion of Utd having to buy players by the middle of July or its a panic buy has come from.
If he prefers him over Maguire then it seems that he's second choice behind Toby, even then his clause of 25m could push Mina up as a priority. We just don't know.
Jose does seem certain 1 transfer is coming in so unless you think it's Maguire, Toby or Willian then its safe to say this could have been in the pipeline for longer than you think.
The thing is, if you believe this story then you have to believe the reasoning behind it. You can't really choose what to get hysterical about.

They are well stocked for cbs and need the non-European slot now they’ve signed Malcolm
 
Don't know much of him, let's be honest apart from the WC few have watched him beyond that. An underwhelming signing if true but I'd be willing to give the guy a chance, seems some have already decided he is terrible which they couldn't possibly know.
 
The Columbian Mangala. I watched him a few times for Barca last season and he was useless. Theres no way he's the answer to our CB problems and i would rather we kept Rojo instead of signing Mina. Can't believe we are linked to him. Must be a joke.

Barcelona based news outlet was the first one to go with Mina rumor like a week back. Noise in England only started last couple days. For the ploy to work (2 targets from English clubs), the English press should be one to be briefed first.

Mina is a decoy, for me. Quite clearly. Club briefs the media we're close to a signing that will please Jose, the Mina links ramp up massively.....I think it's just a 'take it or leave it' statement for Spurs and Leicester regarding whatever offer is on the table for Toby/Maguire. First of those clubs to blink, we sign that CB. Mina is a diversion tactic.
 
Could Mina possibly be a direct Smalling replacement if these Wolves rumours turn out to be true? Not the passer that so many have been calling for, but a presence in both boxes, and from what I saw in the WC a real appetite for defending. Would still need the ball player when Rojo is catapulted out the door, but that will be our transfer deadline day drama.

Not more projects no.

But better projects than we have? Sure that makes sense.

Bailly has a lot to prove right now.

At least Lindelof has some momentum from a fairly good World Cup.

But if we believe that Mina has the quality to become a top CB and is a better project than Bailly or Lindelof, then move them on and get him in. The only point of a project is that its someone you fully believe in. If there are players we believe in more than the ones who havent come good yet then make the change.

Obviously I have no idea how the club and/or Mourinho rate Mina compared to Bailly and Lindelof. But I will say that I'm sure their transfers havent gone as planned so far.

I hope not. I am far from Smalling's biggest fan here and have hardly time for him, but he is miles better than those two other CBs we have, and better than Lindeloff too (whom can still improve a lot). Smalling must not leave before Rojo and Jones who are useless for us.

Yeah. Like I dont like any of our centerbacks tbh, Bailly looked good at first but isnt reliable at all, while Smalling is the only one who stays fit and somewhat reliable who can physically cope with the role. Maybe shouldn't be starting every single game, but he is easily our most "reliable" centerback. And that's not saying much. In an ideal scenario, he would make a perfect squad player at center back and probably key starter at top 6 club, but not one who hopes to do more.
