Feels like he could be our Claudio Bravo type signing. Not necessarily an improvement on current goalkeeper, and not an elite goalkeeper however a move to a different style?

Probably our 2nd choice keeper. Dubravka will go back to Newcastle eventually, Heaton's contract is ending, Henderson will hopefully be sold and DDG will probably be extended for another year to give us time to look for a replacement and fill the other gaps.
Can't see this being true. Why would we replace De Gea, who is having a very good season, with an older, worse keeper? Would be a very weird move.
A lot of United fans seem to have gotten this strange obsession with replacing De Gea with just about anyone but the truth is there aren't many better keepers out there.

Would be a really smart signing. Competition with ddg. Sell hendo for around 20m. Have 2 decent options for goals. And focus our war chest for more pressing areas like a striker.
Yeah, think it's strange. He's at an age where he's not exactly a player to build with. We'd be better off shopping for a new keeper who has years to grow with this team. That being said, I liked the idea in the summer when it was presented as him vying with Dave for the #1 spot. Dubravka doesn't really do that, nor is he some kind of progressive move away from where we've been.

Because De Gea is a poor sweeper and is a weak link playing out from the back both things that are realitive strengths of Sommer. Both things that are key in how ETH wants us to play.
Clearly ETH has had a good look at De Gea and come to the conclusion that he is going to hold us back.

The problem with DDG is he is on MEGA wages. He is the highest paid keeper in the world and he doesn’t even play in the Champions League and doesn’t even make the squad for his national team. His status is based on our team being horrendous the past ten years, he saves us from embarrassing ourselves and we throw more money at him to stay. I imagine the hierarchy at United including ETH have theorised that we can get just as good a keeper (if not better) on less wages and reallocate those DDG wages to other new players.
And that’s without even going into that DDG doesn’t really fit the modern playstyle.

Why are people so confidently saying De Gea is better than him? I haven’t watched a lot of Bundesliga, but is there any area of goalkeeping De Gea actually does better than Sommer?
Maybe we are signing him on a pre contract agreement in January for him to arrive in the summer rather than for him to come immediately?

My guess is you're right. He's out of contract in the summer and Ten Hag probably doesn't want to lose him as a #2 for the next few years when he's been so good on the ball. Similar
And if this happens, we'll let De Gea go and sign a 25-30 year old sweeper keeper on smaller wages who is a better passer.
Guardiola did this with Claudio Bravo and Caballero coming in for a couple years, then they spent big on Ederson and upgraded. So, one year of Sommer and Dubravka wouldn't shock me even if the quality of shot stopping didn't improve.
I do think this, and Wan-Bissaka not being played and Maguire being 3rd or 4th choice does tell us that Ten Hag wants to build up far more from the back than we're doing right now. Might keep us from improving a ton next year since De Gea is a far better shot stopper, but the lack of control in games must be giving Ten Hag fits, and in time, well it worked for City. But they didn't win the league until they ponied up for Ederson (2nd most expensive GK signing of all time back then).

It's the same result, no matter which goalkeeper you compare with De Gea - invariably, De Gea is the better shot stopper and the other bloke is better at all other aspects of goalkeeping.

Sounds like a good plan as long as this guy turns up to be good enough for ETH.
And I remember back then lots of fans thought signing VDS was a ridiculous idea as he was old, flopped at Juventus and only did well in Fulham because he was under no pressure. The general consensus was that he could not handle the pressure of playing for big clubs. A lot of fans thought we were better off sticking with Tim Howard, or should at least try to get Given as he was younger and had higher potential.
I've never known some fans have a blindspot like De Gea. I'm not sure whether its because its hard to analyse goalkeepers (many people basically judge them off what flashy saves they can remember) or whether its simple fondness for a player who's been around a long time. Either way, I can't ever think of a bigger disconnect between how a player actually performs and how some fans perceive him.
Imagine a striker who finished the season with 5 goals, yet the fans were arguing he was the best in the league. That's basically what's happening with De Gea. He's ranked 19th out of 22 keepers at shot stopping so far this season and people are claiming he's doing well. Its bizarre.
Anyway, Sommer is not a long term solution and in previous seasons has usually been solid rather than amazing. But he's having a stonking season and he's a more natural fit for ETH's style of football.
Not sure how much we'd be paying for him, but I can't imagine we'd pay more than £5-10M for a 34 yo keeper out of contract in the summer. Given that Sommer's transfer fee + wages would probably be less than the £18M a year we pay De Gea at the mo, feels like a smart deal.

Don't see this as like VDS at all. He was great at Ajax then eventually struggled at Juventus. A closer equivalent would be a Serie A team buying Kepa this summer if Potter demands and gets Sanchez from Brighton or another keeper, though Kepa's pre-Chelsea resume isn't near as strong as Van Der Sar's.
There's not really a guy with Van Der Sar's resume who struggled after a big move and was still young enough to become a star again. Lots of outfield players fit the bill, like our own Sancho, but not many keepers come to mind. De Gea might even be the closest. Would it be that surprising if he moved to say Serie A or La Liga and became a top 5 keeper again for 3-4 years?

I was thinking the same — assuming that Sommer is more of a ‘modern’ ‘keeper.
He definitely is used to play in a possession based team and isn't afraid of the ball like DDG sometimes appears to be.
One of the most under rated goalkeepers.
Brilliant with his feet, great shot stopping ability.
Always had question marks about his height but hasn't seemed to have impacted him too much.
