Xabi Alonso is horrendously overrated

In fairness pretty much everyone on here said Alonso was a level or two above Barry and it was 50-50 on Carrick/Alonso.

Alonso is far better than Barry, and is not overrated. Barry on the other hand is a tad underrated.

Underrated but still not good enough to be playing for a team with City's ambitions. At least hes better than Rodwell.

Alonso's one of the best deep lying playmakers in the world and one of the best passers in the world as well. There's a reason he finds himself as the first choice starter in midfield for Real Madrid. It's only now that a lot of people seem to appreciate that as well. He was horrendously underrated for a lot of time he was at Liverpool and we only really saw how crucial to their play he was when he left.

He's on a different level to both Carrick and Barry. I'd say it's ironic that those who call him overrated would probably praise Scholes when both are largely similar players in many respects, with Alonso being the better all-round midfielder of the two. Double standards from those people in my opinion.

He isn't as good as Scholes, no. More well rounded but not as good.

He's nowhere near Scholes or Xavi type of maestro at their peaks but he's a world-class player. Slightly similar to Carrick, esp more than to Scholes. Better than Carrick? more eye-catching certainly, but yes better throughout his career.

He isn't that far better as some say mind you.

a notice me OP clearly

Alonso is an excellent footballer - a slightly more talented Carrick but his big difference is his confidence

I think Carrick has been excellent for us the last year - he has fantastic shooting and passing ability - he just does the simple thing too much sometimes to be that game winning midfielder that someone like Scholes is

I'm not for this 'if he's name was .... and he was spanish/brazilian he would have been rated higher', but it is truth in Carrick's case.

I would say he was a bit behind Scholes at his peak, but he's better than the current Scholes. They've got similar passing ability, but Alonso is ahead of him in most other factors of his game and is the better player of the two now.

Of course. Scholes is closer 40 than 30!

wow... with this type of insight into the game the OP should be being lined up by the Boston Red Sox owners as the next to sit in the Anfield hotseat.

I'm pretty sure the majority of United fans would swap Alonso for Carrick right now.

and only Gareth Barry's mum wouldn't rather have Xabi in their side.

Already shitting it because of your draw I see. Trying to persuade yourself of absolute gobshite to calm yourself down I guess.

What in the absolute feck?

Alonso is miles better than Carrick, who is comfortably better than Barry. It's not even a discussion.

It's more of a discussion than comparing Alonso to Scholes.

That's all crap from start to finish. He isn't a deep-lying playmaker like Pirlo, he's not one of the best passers in the world like Xavi or Fabregas, and he's about the same player as Carrick. He's nowhere near Scholes at his best.

He is one of the best passers in the world in my opinion. If you don't agree, then fair enough, but that's what I think and there are quite a lot who agree with me on it. Not as good as Xavi who's in a league of his own for passing but on a par if not better than Fabregas for passing. He's a much better player than Carrick though. I can admit that as a United fan because it's not really up for debate. If he's not a deep lying playmaker type of player though, then what is he?

IMO Alonso is better than Carrick and much better than Barry. One of the best midfielders in the world and after Ronaldo and Casillas, Madrid's best player. So, he is not overrated at all.

Mental thread.

Alonso is an absolutely brilliant player. I was delighted when he left Liverpool.

He was horrible the season before Benitez tried to slog him in exchange of Barry. Alonso at his peak was marginally better than Carrick but Carrick always offered more defensively.

Fair enough City fans rate him higher than others. I do it for united players all the time.

I think alonso is very good though.

You were only on the board for his last year at Anfield! Which happened to be the year after Rafa tried to unload him for Gareth Barry - meaning praise for Alonso was equivalent to a :wenger: for Rafa.

There were loads of people in the years before that who claimed he was a nothing player.

What in the absolute feck?

Alonso is miles better than Carrick, who is comfortably better than Barry. It's not even a discussion.

Agreed. This guy had it right:

I'd say Carrick is third-tier, if we're doing it like that:

Top tier - Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo and Scholes at their best
2nd tier - Alonso, Fabregas (currently), Yaya Toure, Schweinsteiger, Sneijder, Gerrard and Essien at their best
3rd tier - Carrick, Van Bommel, Ambrosini
4th tier - Fletcher, Barry, Song, Lucas Leiva (currently)
Tiers of a clown - Adam, Henderson, Spearing

Modric is somewhere between 3 and 2, as was Lampard at his best.

You can debate Alonso's place amongst the best midfielders in the world all you want. He's still better than Gareth fecking Barry, and I say that as someone he rates him a little higher than most of the Caf.

Glad I'm not the only one whose remembers that Alonso was distinctly inferior to Carrick until his last season at Liverpool. In 2008 not a single person on this forum would have even countenanced trading one for the other, and, as has been noted, Rafa was trying to get rid of him. In the Premier League Carrick was the better player, and the extent to which you consider Alonso superior now probably depends on your views on Spanish football.

Barry's not fit to clean the boots of either of them, of course.
