Xabi Alonso: Bayer Leverkusen manager

Nice to see someone having a clue doesn't it? Not someone who completely abandons something that made them successful in the first place.

Xhaka really knits that midfield together. Arsenal might have won a league or two if they kept him.
Many here told you Xhaka is a really poor player.
Anyway, Alonso did an unbelievable job there on par with Leicester title winner. Cong!

Fantastic achievement. Will be interesting to see how he does at Madrid in a couple of years. ;)

Fabulous achievement. Good for European Club football, so good. Good for Bundesliga too.

Napoli, Leverskusen... Gerona, Villa, Brest maybe in CL next season. I think it's great.

Leverkusen with Bayern relationship is nothing like United and Liverpools. He won the CL with Liverpool and is revered by their fans. There is 0 logic in hoping he would pick United over Liverpool, Bayern or Real Madrid. Sure, we have a bigger appeal than Liverpool for some managers. But we didn't for Klopp, and we sure as shit wouldn't for Xabi Alonso.
But even with Klopp.. I think it’s a story that gets misreported. Lots is made of the “Disneyland” story. But we made that approach when he was employed by Dortmund. Liverpool approached him when he had no club. They were obviously more likely to get him. If United had approached him when Liverpool did, it might be a different story. We won’t know that

As I said to VP, we can agree to disagree on the idea that Alonso would reject United just because he played for Liverpool. Neither of us know do we. It’s just what we think. I can only be confident I’m correct

But question for you and @VP89 - do you also think Alonso would reject Barcelona out of hand if they approached him this summer?

Still not sure if this incredible season is thanks to him or Harry Kane

Congratulations @Zehner , few fanbases have had to deal with so much heartache and near misses. This is a fantastic and well deserved win. Enjoy it!

Thanks! Yeah, the fanbase was so traumatized that even 16 points difference were not enough to not be nervous until the very end :D

Great achievement.

Please Uncle Flo, sign him asap. Liverpool can get Gareth Barry

He has publicly said that there is no way that he moves this summer. So yes he would also reject Barcelona.. All these discussions about where Alonso goes should be about after next season, not about this summer.

Congrats to him and Leverkusen - what a brilliant season from them.

Great achievement.

You're 8 points clear at the top of your league and just went toe to toe with last seasons treble winners under one of your greatest ever managers who recently won you a Champions League he had no right to and has extended his contract this season.

Real Madrid fans truly don't deserve nice things.

Barcelona is more glamorous for spanish/Latino/most players than United is, obviously. Also don't really know Xabi Alonso well enough to know how he feels about that rivalry or how Madrid fans view him.

It's also always relative to other clubs. If none of Bayern/Madrid/Barca/Liverpool were looking for a manager this summer or next summer, then sure, maybe we'd have a shot. I'm not saying he'd reject us out of hand if he was ready for a move (which he said he isn't). I'm saying given that the clubs that would be ahead of United in the pecking order for him all happen to be looking for a manager this summer or next. So yeah. We don't have a shot for him.

Congrats to Leverkusen. To stop Bayerns run is incredible.

It's quite impressive to join a team in the relegation zone, and 18 months later win the title, all in your first season as a coach and without having to rebuild the entire squad.

The truth is that Bayer ususally is a stable top 6 club and had an inexplicably bad run under Seoane. They were no "true" relegation candidate.

yeah Real Madrid - Barcelona and Boca juniors vs River Plate can have a laugh at that.

That being said I don’t think he will ever coach either United or Barcelona.
Look at the global following of the clubs and the TV viewerships of those fixtures and tell me.

Yes. The fact he had a stipulation where he also was allowed to leave his club of real bayern or Liverpool came calling shows where his heart lies on that.

Yeahhh… not sure about that. But ok.

You try telling me the United/Liverpool rivalry is too big and he wouldn’t consider joining us because of it. Then say you don’t know how he views the Madrid/Barcelona rivalry… Pretty sure that one he’d understand more, not less.

Anyway. I disagree completely but have a good day

Stipulation according to Alonso? Link me. Then I’ll admit defeat

Great stuff for him and Bayer!

Still German cup and Europa league to play for too.

You can Google it. Came from various sources including Bild. The Leverkusen CEO initially denied it but clarified that "some agreements are verbal and not in writing".

It's been mentioned almost everywhere that he had this agreement.

Let's be real he's won a mickey mouse league and he's been able to do it with all of his body parts.

The real test will be if he can do it on a cold windy night in Stoke with his hands tied behind his back

On the other hand they were also no serious title contenders in decades.

That´s not hard to explain. Seoane is a sh*tty coach, as he´s showing at Gladbach again. If the BL wasn´t so crap at the bottom of the table this season, he´d be in another relegation battle with Gladbach. He might still get there. Darmstadt is on pace for the 2nd worst BL season of all-time. We hammered Gladbach 3-0 at HT before the referee gave the most ludicrous penalty and red card to one of our players right after HT. Game ends 3-3 and the coach praised himself for the tactical adjustments he made at HT. He was so proud. Return leg, we are now on a 22-games winless streak, finished 0-0 with 11 vs. 11. Guess he forgot the tactical adjustments. Dude is a massive clown. Not to take anything away from Alonso. His job is just brilliant, but the reason they were down there was Seoane alone, not their squad quailty.

Fecking Spanish managers just seem to automatically be good.

Can we give it Juan Mata til the end of the season?
They're on a roll right now. I don't know about Mata, but I'd certainly try to ascertain Valverde's english language capabilities.

Well, Seoane is the reason for that. Not really "inexplicably"... ;)

Unbelievable achievement really, not just winning the bloody thing, but doing it undefeated too.

Hopefully he stays as far away from Liverpool as possible.

Good on him. He might become very unlikeable here one day if he ever manages Liverpool. Happened to Klopp.
