Wout Weghorst

Ugh. So much for making a title run.

This smells so much like Glazer stink I think I just threw up in my mouth. The best thing that could possibly happen is that they sell the club pronto.
I thought it was widely known that we over spent in the summer and as a result we wouldn't have much to work with in January. In that context I think this would be a decent signing, no?

Will remind you of this post if he pops up with an important goal or two in next few months
That’s fine. I think ETH has been great, but the man doesn’t shit gold. Maybe he will score a few goals, but some of us were hoping for a better, longer term solution. Hell, I would have taken old man Giroud over a Burnley/Besiktas retread if we’re going the stop gap route.

We will get a long term solution in the summer but need a different dimension to see us through this busy period of games

Reminds me of the Ighalo loan. Makes no sense to me.
Why didn't the Ighalo loan make sense? It didn't work out but that's not the same thing
The Ighalo loan worked out fine for what it was, we were absolutely fecked with our striking options that season as Rashford did his back in January which left us with only Martial and Greenwood as our strikers (which was just dreadful planning).

Henrik Larsson only scored 3 goals for us in his loan here but he was desperately needed. Sometimes it really is a case of just having a squad player to alleviate the demands on the squad.

That was before Cristiano threw a fit and you a lifeline by agreeing to terminate his contract. That’s 500k per week gone off the wage bill. That’s roughly 10m. Plus, we could look to sell to raise funds as well. Would it be possible to get a squad striker for 20-30m? Maybe. Morata? Don’t know if we could pry away Tammy Abraham.

Did Ronaldo actually terminate his contract and walk out with nothing? I don't know but I suspect not

I think the issue is that we don't need a squad striker long term, we need to spend at least 60-100 mil to bring in a clear first choice striker and that's not happening in this window. Also, 30 mil wouldn't get you much these days.

I don't think it did work out, but mostly because he hardly played, but that's Ole's fault, TBH I liked him, he was a United fan living his dream, if he'd had a proper chance I think he'd have done quite well

I’m really not keen on ETH’s fascination with a big lump up front

Don't personally think we should have spent so much on Antony, fee is ridiculous in fact.
If the board act fast before Ajax sold lot of their players, Antony would have cost much cheaper. Ignoring the fee, he’s the right profile.

This place sneering at a loan signing again. Other clubs seem to utilize that market and sometimes even find decent value in that system, but people here always turn their noses up at it.

He will give us something, something we don't readily have as a team. And he's a hard worker by all indication, that should be useful in a club like ours.

It was probably mutual with him knowing what he was going to get paid from the Saudis.

There probably was a clause in his contract about causing reputational damage or something that could have been activated too no doubt.

ETH also loves his target man like Haller and Huntelaar.

Pressing machine striker, can hold the ball, good in the air, and has warrior personality. This is sensible for short term before summer.

Still fully expect us to bring one in this summer and see it being one of

Kane
Osimhen
Vlahovic
Sesko
Schick

I also wouldn't rule out us bringing him for £10m on a permanent basis to provide a backup number 9 IF the loan happens and he proves useful

Apparently had an emotional exchange with besiktas fans today and waved them goodbye, based on that I'd say we're probably getting him as no one else seems to be in for him.

I’m all for getting a decent striker who is relatively experienced (PL and in Europe especially) and can stay fit until end of season, cheap and has great discipline as well. So as a short term backup, this guy seems like a good idea.

ETH already spoken about Martial's workload. If this is the solution then I'm all behind him.

It makes far too much sense. Decent option, cheap, leave options open going forward and done before mid-Jan.

Won't happen then, surely.

Ground is 36. And if I am not mistaken, wout requested a loan because he refused to play in the championship.

Times are that hard we’re having to go for a player that’s from a championship club. ETH is going back on his word really about signing average players. Even if it’s for 6 months. We need someone who can make a difference… will he be that guy? I’m not sure.
Liverpool signed Robertson from a championship club. Jack Graelish almost got relegated with Villa too.

He is going to be a backup, start maybe 5 cup games and come off the bench here and there to provide cover for Martial/Rashford. We will look for a long term solution in that position in the Summer as we would not be able to address it in a January transfer window. Weghorst is not a long term solution, he’s a stop gap signing to ensure that we have enough bodies to get us through second half of season.

I'll be honest....as a straight loan deal that ends in june this IS NOT a terrible idea.

He's a fuking monster of a player and would provide a stylistic option off the bench that we just don't have when we need to play more direct

This is a guy that has proven on the international level, including this world cup, that he knows how to find the back of the net.

I think I see the logic now. Aboubakar rumor was spread so that after that disaster Weghorst loan sounds like a smart move.

Sigh. And we are doing this to an amazing manager, best manager we've had after Sir Alex. Feck Glazers.

Yeah he stepped up when his country needed him most,ok they lost the shootout but without his goals it doesn't go to ET

Relax we will get that striker in the summer and with Erik in charge he is gonna get it right

People that aren't happy with this option need to actually look at where we are fishing for now.

Aboubakar ? Depay? It was Arnautovic before the window closed and he's second top scorer in Serie A now. We can't do big business currently.

We aren't signing him to propel us to league winners and score 15-20 league goals between now and end of season.

I was going to say he's the exact opposite of every striker we have but we actually don't have an out and out striker.

If Rashford/Antony/Garnacho/Bruno/Eriksen/Sancho can get a proper aerial cross in, this guy will do his utmost to get on the end of it.

Whether or not he will do the business nobody knows.

No matter what happens he's only on loan for a few months,. He's not gonna disrupt the team , He's not going to cry cause he didn't start. Worst case he comes on a sub a few times and doesn't do much. Exact same as bringing a winger on as a striker and and they doing feck all.

This cannot backfire unless he scores loads of own goals or gives away alot of penalties.

Again the fdj transfer saga bit us big-time. And it was obvious at that time, so many people were calling it.

For once I hope we get our business done quickly next summer.

I actually think this will prove to be a masterstroke; the reality is nobody is who could be deemed a good longterm option is available now - I have a feeling it’ll be all in for Kane in the summer - so this profile of player works.

Ten Hag improves/gets the best out of players - Tadic, Haller etc all looked decent under him, while De Ligt, DVB and De Jong all got overpriced moves on the back of the work he did with them. Rashford, Dalot and Shaw look miles better under him, so I’d back him to make Weghorst useful at least.

This is exactly it, you'd swear we were trying to sign him for 50 million quid on a 6 year deal the way some are reacting on here.

For all Ten Hag's talk about signing the right players who are United standard and not average, I struggle to see how Weghorst fits any part of that description.

I'm sure he was referring to permanent transfers, this is just a loan deal to tide us over for the rest of the season because of our lack of striker options.

I think this will workout well but I hope Bruno doesn’t start trying to find Weghorst’s head all the time even to the detriment of the team’s play.
