I don't understand the fixation on formation, we could play the outdated 442, but if we play properly we'll look a lot better than a "modern" 433 under this set of coaching staff.

Conte's teams are defensively solid, they score goals, they control games with and without the ball.

I'm worried that these players might break or throw up a fuss under a more demanding manager, these players will not only have to work much harder in games but work even harder in training as they'll have so much to learn. We do very few things right at the moment. Conte will have to start from scratch with this bunch, not sure a lot of them are cut out for it, or have lost that edge being mediocre and lazy for the past 2-3 seasons.

Well, I don't think they have for the most part been either mediocre or lazy for the past 2-3 seasons. We've played some really good football and had some very protracted strong runs. There's a reason everyone was expecting us to step up into contender status not many weeks ago. Shaw made the tournament team at the Euros and many considered him to be the best DL in the PL last season. Maguire, likewise a huge euro tournament and stepping forward as a top, top CB until he went down with injury a few weeks ago. Rashford has developed into a top left forward. Bruno has been huge since he arrived. Greenwood has evolved into a budding star. As bad as we've been for a while now, that's not the measure of these players.

Exactly.
We have good players. I think even the likes of McTominay and Fred could do better under the right coaching. It's no wonder that the best performing players for Ole is the high flair players as they don't need much coaching to produce. But the lesser players like McT and Fred, and defensive players struggled badly under Ole. Those players need proper coaching to function at their best

Well there’s only the CL and FA Cup to play for this season. So I suppose the question then is whether or not it is worth sacrificing the potential progression of our football and a few of our youngest and brightest talents to hope Conte can close the gap on Klopp, Pep and Tuchel next season with his tumescent brand of football.

I don’t see it happening. And it wouldn’t be worth it for me even if he did manage it before inevitably falling out with the board.

No use your own point. He has won the league every time he has been manager. This year or next year. If he wins the league I don't care if he leaves after two years or has issues with our board who are anyway worth the backlash any person would give them.

If Conte joins Pogba is definitely out of there in a hurry
Pretty sure Pogba was great under him

Never understand why people think we have these bad egos or personalities in here. The players have been grinding and giving it their all for fecking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a coach, despite everyone knowing he'll never be close to what is required to compete with Klopp/Pep/Tuchel.

Yet our board will think he might be too much of a loose cannon, just hate our stupid culture.
You have followed Conte right? He is a loose cannon and there's been disruption pretty much wherever he's gone over the last few years. I wouldn't blame the board for not wanting him.

It’s also not just about thinking long term in terms of a manager staying long term.
It’s about thinking long term in terms of style of play and squad building.
The most dramatic example of this in recent years is going from Van Gaal, who we have hundreds of million too and likes playing possession based football and developing younger players, too then hiring Mourinho who likes his teams to play without the ball and like to work with experienced players.
If your going to have short term managers you need need managers who like to use similar style of players.

To me it seems like we have a good squad and certainly a very good first 11, Ole has to take some credit for that. I also seem to think there is a good spirit in the squad full of (mostly) good personalities. Do we really want another manager to come in with an overtly abrasive character? Personally, not for me.
If we have a very good first 11 and good squad, then why would Conte try to change that ? Why would any manager want to change that ? Doesn't make sense.

Or maybe we think we have a very good 11 and a good squad; but in reality we have a RB who can't attack, a CB that turns like a double decker bus, a CM paring who need 3 touches, two Strikers with with a combined age of 70, wingers who don't defend and a world cup winner who is an enigma.

People said the same about Tuchel when Chelsea hired him, that he will implode against the players and the owner in due time but that hasn’t happened yet so far, not even of a slightest hint. In fact things are looking good for them, he won them the CL and sits them at the top the PL table. Maybe we should take the chance on Conte as well?

Suspect there's a lot of truth in that, both good and bad.

Personally I would prefer a manager who more definitively fits the "fluid and attacking football" Murtough was talking about not too long ago, which is why managers like Ten Hag or Enrique would be top of my list.

But if managers like that aren't available, you have to pick someone. And whatever else he is, Conte is a very good manager. A lot would depend on what he says he can do with the current squad but much though he wouldn't be my first choice, if It happened there would be some positives.

Conte would be a great appointment for United as long as he's fully supported by the Glazers.

There are too many at United who believe their own and the clubs bullshit, I include Ole in that. It's okay for fans to believe that the crowd sucks the ball in and the mythical powers of OT can overcome any setback but once the management and players believe it you are in big trouble. The comeback against Atlanta almost guaranteed the dicking against Liverpool. Watch Ole's interview post the Atlanta match. It was ridiculous.

Every club is special in it's own way and United are no different just bigger. Start believing you belong at the top and other bullshit you are never going to succeed.

Football is played 11 v 11 on a grass pitch of regulation size and what happens on the pitch determines the results, nothing else.

Conte would bring the club and players back down to earth. Some would deal with the reality, others not and would have to go.

Conte is just what United need which, given the recent past, is probably why he won't be appointed.

The problem with the idea of Conte coming in to kick us up the arse and challenge the United myth is that it's almost identical to what we did with Mourinho and that was a spectacular failure.

We need to have a ten year plan, not an 8 month one. Decide how we want to play as a club, put the foundations in place and then get the best possible manager to deliver it - waiting for him if necessary.

Granted Ole is not that ten year plan, that much is clear, but we shouldn't be making any rash decisions which will only give us more to sort out in the coming years.

The good thing about Conte is that I do think he can work with this squad. We are ultimately a defensive team in nature so there is something there for him to grab on to.

It won't be the ideological mismatch that happened between Van Gaal and Mourinho.

We'll get conte, might win a cup before implosion. City will get Ten Hag after Pep and be sorted for the next 7 years.

No use your own point. He has won the league every time he has been manager. This year or next year. If he wins the league I don't care if he leaves after two years or has issues with our board who are anyway worth the backlash any person would give them.

He has never dealt with the level of competition in the PL currently. If you think he’s a guaranteed league title you are guaranteed to be disappointed.

Just for fun, wondering how we'd play if he took over. Given he loves a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, and these were his common lineups at Chelsea and Inter:
Courtois
Azpi Luiz Cahill
Moses Kante Matic Alonso
Pedro Costa Hazard

Handanovic
Skriniar De Vrij Bastoni
Brozovic
Hakimi Barella Eriksen/Vidal Perisic
Lukaku Lautoro

So given that, I'd guess:

De Gea
Lindelof Varane Maguire
AWB Matic/McTom Fred/Pogba Shaw
Bruno/Sancho
Ronaldo/Cavani Rashford/Mason

The Guardian has this to say in an article about Conte maybe coming to United: “The 52-year-old would want to understand United’s vision before committing.”

I’m 64 and would love to understand this as well…

Exactly.

Fred, certainly, if his performances for Brazil is anything to go by. I think that may be a case of being asked to do more than he realistically can.

With McTominay, he is being used in a role where he is our best option but which isn't his best option, so him too I guess.

Least likeable manager in football.

I'll take Giggs before I am happy about Conte taking the helm.

He’d play VdB without doubt.

He is like Ole

You can debate the good and bad or hiring him but he'd certainly have higher expectations and standards than Ole.

Hargreaves pointed out that if Sir Alex was in charge of that match against Everton and Fred made the errors he did he wouldn't play again for a month. Now there are no consequences for anything. Shaw, Maguire, AWB, Fred, McTominay, Fernandes, Ronaldo, Greenwood, Rashford...there is no threat to any of them, Ole will play them if they're fit regardless of how they're playing. He shows he doesn't trust the players on the bench so there's no need for those players to worry about their place.

For my part I think our backline is top drawer. No argument that it's not looking good right now, both Shaw and Maguire clearly struggling for form. Varane is class. AWB too, could be a great player for us with some better coaching. You state our strikers combined age, like that matters? Ronaldo and Cavani are two of the best in the world, then we have Rashford, Sancho, Greenwood and Martial ... we are stacked up front. Bruno, goes without saying and yes, the enigma that is Pogba. Even so, that is a mile better than the state of the squad when Ole took over. Well managed and coached, this team, with an upgrade on McFred could challenge.

I feel like the lack of wingbacks would be the main issue with our squad for him. His teams always expect them to run up and down all game and create chances and our lot are useless at that.

We’ve been through the most toxic manager with Jose. Conte isn’t as bad and unlike Jose is at his peak as a manager. The only other option is Zidane.

He’d play VdB without doubt.
Why would he? Ahead of who? Conte is an excellent coach but Van de Beek is a very quiet player who never stamps his authority in games. Conte wouldn't like him much IMO. He'd probably try him in midfield as well, but he's not as hard a worker as Fred or McTominay, not as good defensively as either or Matic, not as good on the ball as Matic or Fred even... I just don't see any future for Vdb really. He's a nothing player.

So why would Conte change that if it's so good ?

fecking hell. You rather have a woman beater for your manager than Conte? That's fecked up.
I'd rather Ole stays than Giggs return to the club at any capacity

That's the point. I can't stand Conte. And I definitely can't stand Giggs. I've disliked Conte for years, this isn't some new novelty.

Players needs to be drop if they underperform. Ole has a different style, he will continue to play hoping they will come good. He gets rave review for doing that like Shaw....... Fred?.... he doesn't give his bench a chance to impress.
