Conte fits our current squad than pretty much any manager out there. He'd fit it better than Pep, as we don't have a squad that is great at keeping possession and playing tight quick football. He'd fit it better than Klopp as we don't have a squad fit for high pressing, constant energy football. Conte, and managers like Conte, is what our squad is built for right now. World class personnel in defence and attack. Some average midfielders. Quality and depth in attack but players who do pretty much feck all in defensively. So what do you need with that? A 3-4-3 type of system where the manager can coach them as a unit and have the individual talent overcome the opposition.

People have this dream of getting the next Pep or Klopp when the structure just isn't there to support that behind them, and it won't be for the near future. Conte was a perfect situation for us that was almost handed to us on a silver platter, and we've managed to feck that up too. Incredible.

Exactly. Don't know how people fail to see that.

Of course I want more than top 4, but you have to be realistic. If I think a long term appointment would make us more likely to win over time, then how is it unambitious to not hope for a worse short term solution?

Because the squad is good enough to win now? 2 years from now whenever Ole/Rooney are let go you'll say the same thing, "we need a long term appointment". The best players in the world want to win in the present, not be a little token a lame duck manager can use a few years in the future.

Glad Conte is going to Spurs. Shows that Ole is going to be there for a while yet. As he should be.
That's the way I feel as well.

Glad he's signing somewhere so people can stop obsessing about him coming here.

Ole isn't getting replaced in the immediate future, and even if he was I wouldn't want Conte here.

You think that the club wants me to think that they are feckless and that I don't really have any hope for them or the club in the near future? I would be very surprised by that.

How do you mean. They’ve got you to believe in the future. That’s all they need you to do. If they can keep stringing you along with that. They have you for life.

If Conte joins Spurs, this season is over. Ole will be sacked at the end of the season for not finishing top 4, we'll get Potter or Haag or Rodgers and they'll struggle to buy a midfielder because who wants to play Europa league and play in Manchester when managers like Pep, Klopp, Conte and Tuchel are in the country.

There are two problems here, first the post that you quoted makes an unlikely assumption that a manager could stay +5 years which is an exceptional length in Football and you then use an hypothetical where a better option than Conte could be available this summer. That ideal man could easily not be ten Hag, he is used to manage a club that has twice the budget of the second wealthiest team in Eredivisie, he is not used to manage big profile players, he is on the older side of things at 52 and has never managed in a top league and he is used to work in a club that he is highly structured as a pure head coach.

I like the idea of ten Hag and I would gamble on him but people should realize that he is a huge gamble and one of the managers that come with the least certainties. He could be anything from the new best manager around to Bosz or De Boer.

Two problems? Eh ? All you mentioned there is your opinion is different to mine which is fine, a bit pretentious to use the word problem like yours is correct and mine is not, football is a game of opinions, none of us have crystal balls and we football fans are usually always wrong,

1. Ten-Haag if i was to guess going from past records is more likely to stay at a club longer than Conte, the proof is in the pudding there, just because i agreed with the poster i didn't specifically mean 5+ years
2. Ten-Haag who i believe would be a better fit as a manager for Manchester United is not available now and yes hypothetically could be available in the summer which I think if we come calling he would accept, even if he wasn't i don't want Conte.

Ironically in your comments, your logic is also using hypotheticals

Of course I want more than top 4, but you have to be realistic. If I think a long term appointment would make us more likely to win over time, then how is it unambitious to not hope for a worse short term solution?

What exactly is long term ? And who is going to come after that? We have Ronaldo, Cavani, Pogba, Varane and Bruno now. Half of them won't be here next year, means we go through another rebuild. We need results now.

Long term vs short term isn't a manager appointment strategy, all well run clubs appoint for short term goals and evaluate the situation constantly which can lead to long tenures. And your idea is absolutely naive particularly when you need to be even more savvy when it comes to appointing a manager if you were to follow a logic of long term appointments since you will by definition allocate more time and money on a single action, you can't afford to miss on a long term appointment.

Your take isn't uncommon but it makes no actual sense, you wouldn't apply it to any area in your personal or professional life, no one would suggest that if you are not competent in a domain then you should focus on taking decisions that have a lasting impact instead of taking a serie of smaller, less complicated decisions. That's why all continuously successful clubs operate on a shorter term basis, that's less costly and easier to fix.
On the bolded, it clearly is a factor to consider, otherwise Conte would be sat in Ole's office right now, right? The board including SAF like to view it with a long term approach, that's what many have an issue with.

Regarding your opinion that a club would need to be extra savvvy for a long term manager and it costing more, I'm not sure that logic works, for example we've spent a lot of money assembling a talented squad, it benefits us to find a manager that suits the squad we have, especially if we are looking to transition to a different system/approach.

So IMO we should be transitioning to a front foot, high press/possession system and would like somebody like Ten Haag to implement that, swapping to Conte for two years may leave us with a worse squad and one that doesn't suit that style, granted we would need to make some signings to suit Ten Haag as manager anyway but to swap from one manager to the next isn't exactly cost effective either is it, first you have the severance pay for each manager that leaves and each one that comes in need their own signings to make their system/tactics a reality. If you get it right it, not having to swap every other year to a new manager, saves you money by default (granted, provided the incumbent is winning things.)

Should be easy for them to finalise a deal with Conte this time.
Levy just has to meet the demands he previous baulked at in the summer, before pissing away more money on Nuno to save money that he now has to spend. He's a real genius that one.

Such a low point for our club... let Poch go, letting Conte go for nostalgia and harmony reasons..

How do you mean. They’ve got you to believe in the future. That’s all they need you to do. If they can keep stringing you along with that. They have you for life.

Belief and hope are two different concepts and United has me for life almost regardless of who the owners are or what they do. If you have no hope in the future I wonder what you are doing talking about the club, you are wasting your time.

Will be a disaster at Spurs, they won't buy him a new team and he'll implode. He'd do well to hold out for the toon job, they'll give him an open cheque book.

My Liverpool, Citeh and Leeds supporting mates are loving this, they were worried about us getting Conte after the weekends game using a Conte style system, not now though

There is that wonderful Viale or Corso (road with trees) in Turin named Corso Vinzaglio, that is where Conte home is, where Ciro Ferrara has his own pizzeria, where a number of cafes both regularly visit are (full of bianconeri photos from the past and the present).

That’s the wisdom this morning: Conte prefers London to Manchester because he was there already, because of his young daughter schools and because of the connections he made while at Chelsea. He is puzzled by United attitude in the sense that they contacted him recently but winning seems not their first priority, so be it. In the end, money at Spurs will be very good, he knows Paratici from his time at Juve and any sensible progress he would make at Spurs will be seen as his own personal merit, further raising his stock.

They were right indeed, then. It escalated verery quickly and seems a done deal to Spurs.

I think we might regret not pouncing on this, but let’s wait and see. I just hope the club are sounding out Ten Hag behind the scenes and have gotten encouragement, and that’s why they aren’t acting. Rather than just ‘oh well Ole beat spurs so all is rosy again’.

Basically there had better be something else going on rather than exactly what it looks like.

Crazy, some of you are genuinely happy that a manager who's claim to fame as a manager is getting Cardiff relegated from the premier league is here for the rest of the season.

Chelsea got rid of Lampard who is more of legend for their club than Ole was for ours and reaping the rewards of a top manager now.

Meanwhile we get stuck with a P.E teacher, a man who spends half his time sat in the stands whilst his assistants do his job and the other half laughing as he shouts instructions to players as we play like crap.

If Conte goes to Tottenham then who is genuinely left?

Conte finished outside the top 4 with Chelsea.
His European record is very poor.

I dont get why he is rated so highly.

I can't wait for Ole to win anything really. How long its been 3 years and 415m spent (a decent chunk of that on wingers and AMC that we don't play)?

Why is that your response to my comment? No one mentioned Ole and off you go

Well it seems like his move to Tottenham is very close so pointless to even discuss it anymore. Though all the reports over the last 5-6 days or so have been saying that our board isn't very keen on Conte so it looked unlikely to happen anyways.

Ole should of been sacked and should still get sacked at the end of this week. Regardless if Conte is available or not. Makes no difference, except with Conte we could of won a major trophy this year.

This. I can't see the point of going through another season blowing hot and cold and putting off the inevitable. With Conte we would have an immediate improvement along with the chance of winning something.

Ole is too nice a guy and has his favourites too. We need someone able to give the hairdryer treatment when necessary and whom the players would respect and work for.

Right on cue for us to panic then and offer Conte a double your salary contract that what might have previously been discussed

Conte finished outside the top 4 with Chelsea.

Because he won the league with loads of goals and 93 points. Then he won the FA cup, then he went to Inter and won their first league in 10 years. He also has an instant impact which is exactly what we need.

Do you know next weeks lottery numbers?

Because you're making it sound as if we're better off without Conte and with this fraud at the wheel.

Our squad is far far better though. Like, there's a huge gap.

Agreed.

But our manager is far far worse.

So while we should still get 4th it would not be a foregone conclusion.

The fact we are have to be talking about not making top 4 is another reason Ole shouldn't be here. Man has spent an absolute insane amount and most on players he doesn't use now.

Right on cue for us to panic then and offer Conte a double your salary contract that what might have previously been discussed
It's too late Conte will go to Tottenham before Ole has another disastrous run of results meaning we are left with.... practically nobody.

On the bolded, it clearly is a factor to consider, otherwise Conte would be sat in Ole's office right now, right? The board including SAF like to view it with a long term approach, that's what many have an issue with.

If you get it right it, not having to swap every other year to a new manager, saves you money by default (granted, provided the incumbent is winning things.)

How did you come to the bolded conclusion, there is a lot of things that could affect that decision one of them being money since we just extended the manager and his staff?

And what makes you think that the board and SAF like to view it with a long term approach when the current manager was only an interim appointment and was extended for "only" 3 years based on short term results, if what you say is true Ole would have never been extended and they would have followed the announced long term plan of appointing a DOF and then appointing a head coach during Summer but we both know that it didn't happen that way.

And your last paragraph makes no sense in this context because nothing actually tells you how long Conte or ten Hag will last, I mentioned it earlier but someone like Simeone is now on a full decade at Atletico while having a very similar career to Conte before that, a manager longevity has more to do with relative success and the willingness of his club to accomodate him than it has to do with the manager itself, the same is true for ten Hag who didn't stay much in his previous jobs until Ajax. The second point about that paragraph is that you can't talk about the club having a long term view and put ten Hag in the equation because he is at the opposite end of Ole in terms of Football, if the club was to sack Ole then the long term appointment would be a manager that is a continuation of what Ole has done because the long term view starts in June 2019 not today and we need to make the best of that long term view that's why I said last week that in reality someone like Conte is probably the right appointment and if we want to change things the starting point should be after the current expensive core of this team is out or on the decline, we need to keep in mind that we invested a lot of money in the likes of De Gea, Varane, Maguire, Bruno and Ronaldo these investments aren't part of a rebuilt or a new long term plan, they were made for the present.

BREAKING: Antonio Conte has been offered an 18-month contract by Tottenham, according to Sky in Italy.

I hope we do not regret this.

Spurs fans will be happy. Christ. I hope he doesn't take some of our players in January.... that would be too much.

That's not ironical but the point, we can make hypotheticals about everything which is the problem when you tell people that they are very short sighted while using hypotheicals and not facts.

So as expected Ole will remain at the wheel till the end of the season and probably beyond.

The club don’t see him as the right fit, probably his style of football and the fact he’s short term wherever he goes. It’s fine if the club have decided he’s not the right man, I don’t particularly want him here either. If it means we get Ten Hag or someone else better in the summer then it’ll be worth it. Long term I just don’t see Conte as being a good option.

Don’t be so dramatic we signed Bruno when we were in Europa, players still want to sign for United

So Conte is on his way to Spurs, Zidane made it very clear he’s not interested and Poch and Ten Haag are tied up until the end of the season. Ole’s got the whole season now, his luck is fecking incredible.

Looks that way. Got the vital win just in the nick of time. It's been the story of his United tenure.

He will now be here until the end of the season at least. His future surely depends on getting 4th, though - fail to do that and I expect we'll move Ole on in the summer and try for Rodgers or Pochettino.
