I'd be quite annoyed at the board if we don't sign at least one more player. For a club like United to spend sub £100m in a transfer window when the team can be improved is negligence.
They are talking about 'inflated' fees, yet all the top clubs are paying these fees. Juventus spent a truckload on Ronaldo, Barca spent a truckload on Coutinho and Dembele, City have spent a truckload on everyone they buy.
It's also quite worrying that all we have is to follow Mourinho's list because there are no footballing people at the top. Most clubs have a system in place that isn't so reliant on the manager. For example, Mourinho could get 1st choice on a position, and if we can't get him the club will also have a player or two for the long term that the manager approves.
There are quite a few reliable accounts that Dembele has been offered around by Barca, and Malcom's arrival also signals that this is a player that is actually for sale. Woodward said that we can do crazy things in the market, so why not Dembele?
- DoF: The need for a DoF and additional people for selecting and handling transfer targets is clear, and nobody here disagrees with this notion. Current problem with this: Mourinho does not want a DoF and Woody will not relinquish his control on transfer related matters. Ideal solution for this: Hire Monchi as DoF, Woodward only role in transfers is to set the amount we can spend each season. Subsequently Woody will get more time to make sponsorshipdeals(Head and Shoulders deal for Fellaini) and the club makes more money.
- The board and transfers: As long as they/Woody feel confident that we will qualify for CL next season they do not see the need for overspending. Read this post then you will understand that further spending this window without selling will limit what we can spend next year severely. And the board/woody may think that they should not spend more this season and thus give the next manager the possibility to acquire his own targets.
- Dembele: I agree that Dembele is transferable from Barcelona, and that they will accept high offers, but buying younger players with the hope that they will improve/develope in a club that has shown no sign of player improvement/developement over the last two seasons (bar Lingaard) is not smart. Also younger attacking players does not fit with mourinhos tactics/system.
