Wot, no transfers?

I'd be quite annoyed at the board if we don't sign at least one more player. For a club like United to spend sub £100m in a transfer window when the team can be improved is negligence.

They are talking about 'inflated' fees, yet all the top clubs are paying these fees. Juventus spent a truckload on Ronaldo, Barca spent a truckload on Coutinho and Dembele, City have spent a truckload on everyone they buy.

It's also quite worrying that all we have is to follow Mourinho's list because there are no footballing people at the top. Most clubs have a system in place that isn't so reliant on the manager. For example, Mourinho could get 1st choice on a position, and if we can't get him the club will also have a player or two for the long term that the manager approves.

There are quite a few reliable accounts that Dembele has been offered around by Barca, and Malcom's arrival also signals that this is a player that is actually for sale. Woodward said that we can do crazy things in the market, so why not Dembele?

  • DoF: The need for a DoF and additional people for selecting and handling transfer targets is clear, and nobody here disagrees with this notion. Current problem with this: Mourinho does not want a DoF and Woody will not relinquish his control on transfer related matters. Ideal solution for this: Hire Monchi as DoF, Woodward only role in transfers is to set the amount we can spend each season. Subsequently Woody will get more time to make sponsorshipdeals(Head and Shoulders deal for Fellaini) and the club makes more money.
  • The board and transfers: As long as they/Woody feel confident that we will qualify for CL next season they do not see the need for overspending. Read this post then you will understand that further spending this window without selling will limit what we can spend next year severely. And the board/woody may think that they should not spend more this season and thus give the next manager the possibility to acquire his own targets.
  • Dembele: I agree that Dembele is transferable from Barcelona, and that they will accept high offers, but buying younger players with the hope that they will improve/develope in a club that has shown no sign of player improvement/developement over the last two seasons (bar Lingaard) is not smart. Also younger attacking players does not fit with mourinhos tactics/system.

Didn't we come 6th in his first season?

Won the Europa League and got that Champions League TV money. That’s the prize for our owners. Deliver that, don’t ask for much investment and you are set for life.

There was no champions League TV money. The TV deal splits it based on finishing position in the league heavily weighted to the champions.

We earned no TV money from last years champions league until after Xmas.

In fairness, if I were a business owner, and my CEO or manager said, that I will get you CL money every year and won't ask for much investment - as long as he kept to his word, he'd be set for life.
And for those who say that the Glazers will save the money and put it back into the business - I doubt this. They could've repaid the debt to the lenders a long time ago, but they didn't. They prefer to pocket the cash themselves (which is within their rights).

They see this club like a cashcow.

BTW, does anybody think we are going to make any signings? Do the people who were using WC as an excuse, think we are going to make signings?

I've got a horrible feeling that we won't make any more signings. That leaves the full back and right wing positions looking pretty weak.
If we do make a signing I think it will be one more and it will be a centre-back. I'd be happy with Maguire, but Alderweireld is 29 and has a bit of a history of injuries. I don't see the big improvement to our squad if we do manage to bring him in.

So, bring in Maguire - good move, but doesn't address the biggest issues. But I feel more likely we'll add no-one.

We are 1/4 to sign Toby Alderweireld before the window shuts, 11/5 that he stays with spurs. These odds surprise me

Feel this thread needs added exclamation marks.

I'm increasingly pissed off by our lack of activity. I'm sure we'll be working on something but it feels like we've left it late for no good reason.

When some of us had this concern last month, we were told to be patient. How people cannot see Woodward isn’t interested in bringing quality players to the club really beats me.

Well in about 5 hours time the prices will start going back up as teams in UK will say - we have no time to find a replacement - so get a wriggle on Ed or we are back in Fellaini premium payment territory again.

Why would Ed leave all this so late?? The CB that we obviously need, let alone the left back and right wing which it looks we're having to shelve now as he's left everything so late. Makes him look very amateurish

Businesses like to keep debt as it is tax efficient. As for paying themselves, I didn t see recent dividend figures but aren't they like 15 or 20m. Nothing.

Dont really get all this criticisim of Ed. I mean even as a fan we are asking why the hell are we chasing a CB and not a RW or LB. He probably is thinking the same when he received the list from Jose

Tick tock. Very annoying that the tweets seem to indicate its just centre halves we're looking at now too. I'd much rather a RW to a CB. Toby will make us better, but I don't think he's a massive upgrade on what we've got. Anybody half decent would be a massive upgrade on Mata on the right wing.

I feel it. Something spectacular is going to happen. Like 3 out and 2 in .

I'm secretly hoping for this but I don't think it will happen.

Expecting a busy deadline day with a panic buy right at the end.
Feels like the rush that got Fellaini in for over the odds 5 years ago. (Even though I am one of the few who are fine with him)

Who'd have believed that when this thread was created, we would still be writing posts in it, at this stage of the transfer window.

I feel it. Something spectacular is going to happen. Like 3 out and 2 in .

We have sucked in the transfer window for weeks/months and I doubt that will change in the next 2.5 days. Here's hoping, though. :(

Getting really close to the deadline now. Why on earth would we leave it so late? Summer of 2013 all over again (although at least we've bought someone this time). Woodward is the common denominator in our post-Ferguson era of diminished success - I'm convinced he's absolutely clueless.

I really hope we don't have to settle with depressed top 4 battle resignation before the season starts. Like many have said, just a CB won't be enough.

Surely 70 odd million on Willian or even Zaha is within our capabilities. Sell two or 3 to make a good chunk back.
Just read that our debt has gone back up in the last few years. Imagine if there was no debt.

He provided a list of names for multiple positions not just CB ffs

I'd trade Pogba to Juventus in exchange for money, Sandro, Pjanic and Cheillini

Sort out 3 positions and let an unhappy(?) player leave in one deal.

Ultimately though, I'd prefer United tie Pogba to a new deal (which despite everything, I'm sure Raiola and Pogba would sit down and listen to, maybe even what they're really after) and De Gea. Getting those two done would be better than any signing we could make

6 plus weeks ago when we had signed Fred and Dalot early doors I had a good feeling, thought Ed was on target for his best transfer window. What a turnaround.

He has four years left on his current contract, what has he done to deserve a new one besides Raiola offering him to half the world.

If things stand and no signings the Jose moaning is going to the next level.

Even as I have been shamelessly been empowered by it as an oppo, couple recent whining is starting to affect me. Every football related media is being saturated by it. Jose slating this and Jose warns fans that.

Enough is enough. I hope you sack him and PL gets rids of him. He has started to stink up the place. But Mourinho himself have invited this kind of media antipathy towards himself. It's been his modus operandi since his first Chelsea stint. Anything too much and it gets on nerves eventually. Like Kloppo this and Kloppo that when media was full of Klopp mania.

But time really is short and we arr going see a mad dash in the next 2 days. Be that United or Chelsea but we certainly are going to see panic buys.

We left everything so, so late and now all others teams know that our backs are against the wall !

I don't think we are signing anyone either. Not that I'm bothered, Jose's list is utter shite. Nothing but CBs and an obsession with Willian who Chelsea have no intention of selling.

If I were Ed, I'd fine Jose for producing such an utterly shite list.

I floated this idea in the pogba thread yesterday, but how would people feel about Rakitic and Umititi coming the other way? If pogba truly does want to leave, then getting these two players could arguably improve us beyond what we are now even if he does go.

This is obviously all hypothetical though, considering which players would add up to his value and who would be willing to leave Barca ect.

As it stands, we are in a very precarious position of not getting anyone in and having a month where the vultures that are Big European clubs circling around our top players.

Very surprising that we’ve not strengthened beyond Fred.

Really bizarre. I can only assume the board are trying to force Mourinho out...
