World Chess Championship: Anand vs Carlsen II

Equal? These are the sort of games that Carlsen thrives in. If he grinds Vishy here, it would be a huge blow. Carsen's knack of winning "equal" endgames is probably his greatest strength IMO
Well it was, but Anand didn't manage to do anything in the middle game, and Carlsen was close to winning this one, but Anand kind of "salvaged a draw" in the end.

Good game for a first game though.

Good first game. Vishy will be encouraged by the start, Carlsen the end.

Not that I disagree with you, but people also thought that last year.

Ok then, let's try to make it interesting.. How do you think the match will go per game?

My "prediction":

Game 01: Draw
Game 02: Draw
Game 03: Draw
Game 04: Draw
Game 05: Draw
Game 06: Draw
Game 07: Draw
Game 08: Carlsen
Game 09: Draw
Game 10: Draw
Game 11: Draw
Game 12: Carlsen

Final score: 7-5 for Carlsen
That's bit harsh on Anand with no win.I'm not expecting Anand to win this tournament but certainly looking for some surprise here.Much better performance than last year.

Carlsen again decides to trade a bishop for knight to leave Anand with double pawns. Is this going to be Carlsen's main strategy in this match? Inflict damage on Anand's pawn structure, survive the middle game, and then grind him out in the endgame? It is imo the correct strategy for him to follow considering his and Anand's strengths and weaknesses.

As far as the opening preparation goes, it looks like Anand handled the opening well and we're now into the middle without any problems for either player.

The thing is I expect Carlsen to take very few risks in the match and play it as safe as possible, which is why I'm not only predicting that Anand won't be winning any, I'm also predicting that Carlsen won't be winning many either (only one game really apart from the last one).

I do expect Anand to get better positions in a couple of games, but converting them to a win is another matter.

It's just a prediction though and I hope I'm wrong.

Anand straightened out his double pawns, and we have a situation of bishops of opposite colours now (which is drawish in the endgame, but could allow more fireworks in the middle game).

Looks like Anand will have to save another bad position. Anand winning this is now out of question.

Anand blunders on move 34 to gift the point to Carlsen. Wow.

This wasn't a typical Carlsen victory. He just outplayed Anand in the middle game and won decisively when Anand blundered in a difficult position under time pressure.

Well done @pillory for predicting a Carlsen win in game 2.

:( Carlsen is going to cruise isn't he.

I know nothing about chess, but yes. Yes he is.

Weren't you in one of the tourneys we did?
@Danny1982 do you still play?

I now live 1 block from the 2nd oldest chess club in the USA but have had no time to go :(

Thanks to the world championship match I found myself playing a few blitz games yesterday and today. I wasn't impressed by my play though. Been a while. Do you still play?

I used to play a lot and was pretty good. I tried playing recently. Amazing how bad I am now. Just can't seem to focus beyond a few moves ahead and I've forgotten what used to be autopilot openings :(

Good to see Anand go for it. A very decent opening for him. This will make it interesting, Magnus has had a stroll prior to his.

Looks like Carlsen ran into Anand's preparations today, and Anand just took it home from there with some brilliant play.

This sets up the match really well. Great to see Vishy's still got it! Magnus has been troubled for the first time in a while and it will be interesting to see how he approaches the next game.

It would be Intresting to watch the remaining games.

Not entirely unhappy about that. Great for the match. Perhaps my gut feeling about loads of decisive games wasn't completely silly.

Got to say I'm actually rooting for Anand here, Carlsen is just too smug :p

A draw it is. Match tied at 2-2 now, and still very much interesting!

Carlsen had a slight advantage in this one, but neither player made big mistakes.

I think carlsen will eventually win but this time it will be much closer.
