Surely a summer of drastically poor proportions will make his position untenable? I can't see us having a very successful summer as the options are dwindling fast, so he most likely wouldn't get another year in the job. Then again, he's done such a remarkable job at acquiring new sponsorships, so you never know. It's starting to feel like that's just as important to the club than signing players at this present time.

Coutinho? We clearly havent signed Shaw either. We may well do....but its not done.

Before LVG or not, he shouldnt be saying jack shit to the press. He is doing nothing but creating pressure for himself and in turn making the club look incompetent. If he continues with his "urgent transfer business" nonsense then we are going to be in a bit of bother come September.

Bah, was looking at Coutinho on SM, meant Carvalho!

That's his job mate. Take pressure off from Glazers and put it on himself as he only care about cold interest in making money for a sport institution he works for.

He's a classic example of a businessman enjoying his trip up on a social ladder. That's all he appears to be right now.

I was just about to post the Glazer angle....further supports the "wont spend a penny" argument. More excuses.

Glazers wont care....gives them another fall guy and get away without spending for another year.

The guy is an absolute tool.

Should learn to keep his mouth shut. He's spent months telling every journalist that we've got deals done and even went as far as telling Daniel Taylor we had "signed 2 players already". Also spent a whole load time spouting shite about how important it was to sign players before the world cup.

Yes, its only June and still got plenty of time. My point is he's made himself look like an imbecile.....again.

WTF did you think would happen when we got rid of Moyes? Did you actually think all our plans for the summer would continue ahead regardless?

Christ, did people genuinely not realise there might just be some negative consequences to getting a new manager just before the summer starts?

My view is the guy is a twerp. He's there to take the flake. We shouldn't have someone used to making money the one responsible for spending it since he's good at one and abysmal at the other. If we believe we let Chelsea have Fabregas and we didn't compete? We're Mugs. You have to compete. Let's see if we do that because when you talk about having xxx to spend - you will fall flat on your arse.

If you intend to spend it, you never say how much you have. We'll buy one midfielder and maybe that's as a result of LVG but it's stupid. If you get the opportunity, you compete! Chelsea lost lampard? No problem they signed Fabregas, a player that Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime spent last season chasing and not getting. They got him barely more then what we offered last season.

Not much else to say right now. Except, where the players? ...

You've completely misunderstood my point. Woodward knew long before the decision was made that Moyes future was not guaranteed - he should not have said shit to the press about plans for players in the summer. We all know a change in manager brings different targets - Woodward has created a situation by saying things he shouldnt have in the first place.

It's such an obvious thing we need to sign midfielders, a defender or two and a winger. Where's the bids? Oh I see what you're saying. The new manager wants to access the squad, give everyone a chance? Blows my mind. You got to compete in the summer. We're not doing that. Is it that if LVG fails we'll bring someone else in to 'access' the fecking squad? Fabregas will be a BIG player for Chelsea. It's nuts to let him just sign for Chelsea. Do we want to compete or what?

Well we have gone for a Manager that's currently managing a team in the Brazilian World Cup. This was one of the issues we all thought would happen when Van Gaals name was being mentioned in the papers. None of us has any idea what's happening at the club, not even the Journalists have a scoobies. I think us remaining quiet is signs of our staff being very busy and working on targets. We just have to be patient and stop crying when a new mega signing occurs.

I'm not that fussed that we've passed up on Cesc, I really think we have better lined up. It's not a race! :)

Don't worry Ed. Chelsea have Fabregas and Costa in the bag after finishing 3rd and reaching the champions league semi but take your time bud.

As far as I recall the comments made were in regard to bringing top players in - which may very well still happen. I don't recall him ever saying "we'll sign Cesc Fabregas" or commenting specifically that they will target any player.

As it is the club may very well have been in for Fabregas and were turned down because he preferred a move back to London.

The club would not comment publicly I suspect as to whether they were interested - which is sensible. The news blackout regarding signings is the best way to get things done. Let the press speculate and just get on with things quietly.

You're saying he shouldn't say things he can't back up, and in this case, he hasn't.

I think you give us to much credit. Woodwood isn't the guy from the equalizer. It's the psychological effect it has on players. If he stays fit, Chelsea will be a FAR bigger threat because he is good for 10+ goals a season and as many assists...and he's proven in the premiership

Amazing.

Ah right, my mistake. In that case I agree with you, Woodward (and Moyes when he was here) built up a ridiculous level of expectation over the last few months.

It's very obvious that we need to sign midfielders but there is more than one type around, you know. Cesc isn't the type we need. That simple. Having a balanced team is more important than simply signing big names. If we start missing out on actual targets I'll start worrying but if LVG is happy to use Kagawa/Mata as the most creative midfielder in his three than I don't really care about missing out on Cesc.

He leaked to daniel Taylor that he thought two deals were done. This was also when the board were supposedly considering sacking Moyes. Why would he leak that if he thought there was even a slight chance of us having a new manager, and therefore new targets? He's been nothing but an amateur so far.

Correct.

We'll get this shit like clockwork every time a half decent player moves on.

Some on here are clueless. They moan when the club mention players they want publicly - but also moan when there's no news from the club.

Loads wanted Moyes sacked and are now surprised that transfers are taking longer than a couple of weeks to emerge - even though the manager was appointed a few weeks ago and every half decent player is at the World Cup.

Some moan when we target top players because its a "waste of time" but when that player does move "we should have been in for him".

Fact is nobody knows what's going on behind the scenes. The club seemingly wants certain players which may or may not come off. Now is not the time to judge if this summer has been a success.

How do you know who leaked it? How do you know anyone did and it isn't made up? Unless I've missed something.

You know we can sign more then one midfielder right? Mate Kagawa will never be as creative or score as many as Fabregas.....

You can improve the quality of the team as well as squad. People keep talking about Kagawa. Keep on talking cause there is no comparison.

He can be slagged off for the players in before the WC briefings but not for Fabregas. If LvG didn't want him then we don't sign him.

He seems more like a 'yes definitely, maybe not, unlikely, sorry no' man to me.
If you are referring to transfers yeah. In relation to the Glazers, he will diligently take the flack and adhere to everything they say. The perfect man to relieve them of pressure.

How do you know who leaked it? How do you know anyone did and it isn't made up? Unless I've missed something.
I thought it was common knowledge that Woodward had been briefing a select few near the end of the season. Mitten and a few others have said that's a fact, and I think he's the only journalist to actually get an interview with him, so I'd be inclined to believe him.

If there's one club that needs to have a big summer it's Manchester United, Chelsea are probably only behind City in the list of clubs who could get away with a quiet summer. So far they've made two top class signings, and the WC hasn't even started.

I remember this forum when Moyes was sacked, everyone was concerned about not getting business done early in the summer [before the WC]. And here we are.

I wouldn't mind but there hasn't even been transfers [going out] or really, any visible presence by our chairman at all, having to chase targets post WC could be a nightmare. Frankly after last years complete clusterfeck we really needed to hit the ground running, and it hasn't happened.

You know we can sign more then one midfielder right?

Yep, and we need more than one midfielder too. That still doesn't mean we need Cesc.

Been pointed out before by other posters (and Ill assume it's true) that LVG like his midfield to consist of one creative CM, one box to box CM and one defensive CM. Out those three types the creative CM is the position we have the best options in with Mata/Kagawa and even possibly Rooney. We're currently missing the box to box and defensive midfielder in that set up and Cesc would fill neither of those roles.

Indeed. I find it all exciting, perhaps I'm being naive but if we are turning Cesc away then it seems to me that we're going after a bigger fish. I'll be patient and judge our Summer once the window closes. There's a World Cup to keep us distracted! My hope of a Kroos/Vidal partnership is still alive! :D

Maybe it's a good thing that we're not seeing/hearing much being done? I was getting sick of every story leaking to the press...

Good point about transfers out of the club, I'd have expected to see some deadwood shipped out pretty quickly. We might just be playing it same until we sign replacements though.

Let's be honest, we probably were interested and he turned us down. Is that fair? Because when we say we weren't interested, it makes us sound like idiots. Of course we were interested. We want to play in the Champions league no? He's a great player?

I guess we'll have to wait and see what the club does won't we? We'll see then who we fail to sign at the last minute costing the club further ground.

The worry is LVG will identify his targets and then Woodward will make a balls of it (again) or end end up paying way over the odds (again) because every club in Europe knows we need big changes and can hold us to ransom.

There isn't a single player in the world who wouldn't want to have their future nailed down before a world cup. All those who are currently in Limbo about which club they'll be at next season would have wanted to be signed already, which leads me to believe that Eddy boy has fecked up, Van Gaal has given him no transfer targets because he's pre-occupied, we've signed players but want to announce it post-cup or Van Gaal has complete faith in our squads ability.

Hopefully, its one of the last two, because if its the first then it really probably will be bye-bye too Woody regarding our transfers and the second one is just highly unlikely.

Well according to Cesc Reps, it wasn't like that. They waited for our response, we said no, he went to Chelsea. That's what's being pushed around Twitter.

Twitter. Look at the end of the day he signed for Chelsea and he knows Arsenal fans won't be happy.

If that is right then fair enough. I've not seen it any where stated that "Ed Woodward told me this or that". I'm not sure why a journalist would reveal sources - that is usually the last thing they want to do.

Even if it is the case the suggestion was that deals are "agreed in principle" which isn't the same as certain to go through - presumably they are for the incoming managers approval.

As such, perhaps LVG doesn't want them. If not then that isn't the boards fault.

Fans called for Moyes to be sacked and he was. That throws transfer plans into chaos and they start potentially have to start from scratch. The fact that deals aren't done yet is not a surprise when that is the case.

The vast majority of all clubs transfer business will be done post World Cup anyway.

It was flagged from a long way out that we weren't interested in Cesc. You might be right though, maybe we were just covering our bases by leaking that and we would've been interested in Cesc after all. Wouldn't particularly make sense to me though given the type of player we need for a balanced CM, but who knows?

If we start obviously targeting someone and get turned down, then I'll panic. Until then I'm willing to be patient and see what happens in the couple of weeks after the WC.

We'll have our own targets. If we're going to go and have an E-numbers paddy every time another club signs someone we haven't signed it'll get ridiculous and fast.

Twitter. Look at the end of the day he signed for Chelsea and he knows Arsenal fans won't be happy.

What alternative did he have? If Chelsea were the only club that made an offer, then he's going to Chelsea. Arsenal fans can moan all they like, but Wenger had the chance to sign him and they said no. Arsenal fans have no reason to whine except to Wenger for allowing it to happen. But why should Arsenal sign him when they have Ramsey and Ozil?

We'll have our own targets. If we're going to go and have an E-numbers paddy every time another club signs someone we haven't signed it'll get ridiculous and fast.

Pretty much. Not signing our targets is reason to get annoyed, not signing everyone else's targets isn't.

If Chelsea or City want a player, the feeling is always that they will ultimately get him. When we want a top player, the feeling on here is that he's unrealistic and it shouldn't be for a club such as ours. I just hope that we're looking at targets which are considered as top players that can come into the team and get us to the next level.
