Can Russia afford to lose against the Czechs if Slovakia beats Latvia? How many teams progress from a group? Usually have no clue about group stages....
Ay sorry mate.
All the teams advance, and then are re-seeded, which is why goals are VERY important in international shinny.
Qualification round then the quarterfinals are like so:
12 plays 5, winner plays 4
11 plays 6, winner plays 3
10 plays 7, winner plays 2
9 plays 8, winner plays 1
Essentially if the Czechs beat Russia, the Czechs will likely be the high seed, Russia may or may not slip into a position where they play a harder team.
If Finland beat Germany, then they will play Sweden for a bye, though both teams might advance to the quarters... Super Sunday should be interesting.
The 3 points available per game system is fantastic, and winning in OT still only gets you 2 points (Like Canada last night) and losing gets you one (Russia).
As of right now, we'll say Finland beats Germany 2-0 like Sweden did:
Latvia plays Russia, winner plays Czech Republic
Germany plays Switzerland, winner plays Finland
(Winners play in the semis)
Norway plays Canada, winner plays Sweden
Belarus plays Slovakia, winner plays USA
(Winners play in the semis)
