Wimbledon

back on Song here. She can do Serena easy imo.

BTW rained for half a day last Thursday I think. Some matches were effected, but most becuase it was an early start by 2pm it was clear skies

There speaks the voice of knowledge. Apparently it's gonna piss it down tomorrow. Now look what I did.:(

Anyone seen much of Dementieva? The only thing I remember is she has a terrible serve. Seems the main obstacle to my Williams sister bet if Serena can come through here.

Really poor stuff here by Radwanska. Played great up until now and has crumbled.

Very Immature tennis.

The Williams sisters are showing that power generally wins out(yet again). The women's game is pretty pathetic to be honest, a Wimbledon QF with scores of empty seats. Yet, woe betide the man who says they are getting the same as men for doing less and bringing in less money.

A few years ago it was the men that were boring and the women were exciting. Now it's reversed. I find so many of the women just fold when they have to play a Williams sister. No belief whatsoever. The stars all faltered early so I cannot see anything but a Williams final. Yuk. They play the kind of muscular tennis that Nadal does. Effective but not terribly attractive to watch. Too bad Henin and Hingis retired and Mauresmo has had so many injuries. At least they had touch, flair and variety. Anway, come on Roger. A victory for all court tennis with flair and grace.:D

To be fair, Serena does have a lot of skill to go with the power. Or at least she used to when she was at the top of her game. I always thought she was a bit hard done by from people saying she simply powered her way to wins. Obviously not Henin and Hingis levels of skill, but far more than the likes of Venus, Sharapova and a lot of the other women coming through that would've been nothing without their power.

looks like rain today lads.

You might get some work done Brophs

Federer looks at his best today, just won the first 6-1. He's returning as well as I've seen him in a long time.

I think I am right about Fed beating that wall.

He is amazing to watch. Consistant - no errors.

BTW did youse hear about Jankovic creating a stir and not been happy playing on Court No 2 on Monday.

Was heard to say that as World no 2 she should be playing on Centre Court if not Court No 1. Wimbledon gave her a slap on the wist's by saying all the players Men & Women were out on Monday and some of the women who never had Big Court experience got a position on Centre / No 1.

But I love this line. - Probably the greatest ever player to play at Wimbledon, Sampras, lost his very last game at Wimbledon on Court No2, nobody deserves special treatment.

Will be interesting to see where she gets next year first round. I personally don't like her so I hope its court No. 2

brophs, do you really think there game is all based on power. Maybe more so with Serena but they both have a lot of quality as well. Players such as Sharapova, Ivanovic are just as athletic or powerful and also dont have much grace. Henin is the only recent top player that has played that way.

No, not at all. The point I was making was just that they are probably more talented than any other players on the tour, but invariably when I see them, power is the key to them winning matches, not their superior shot-making abilities. They have it, and the vast majority of their opponents don't. Unless they are in poor form, generally over a long-ish match, they will just have too much for their opponents. I wouldn't agree that the players you mention are equally as powerful, the Williams' for me are out on their own in that respect.

Fair enough. Im just trying to make out why some people (not particularly you) seem to dislike them or their activities. Your correct on that, they are greater physically than Sharapova and Ivanovic did not mean to say that... just meant their game is based on mostly power as well. Just look how Ivanovic failed to adjust to Zhengs game.

Strangely enough, I quite like the Williams'. They made the other women on the tour raise their standards just to have a chance against them, and since they lost their focus on tennis, it seems like there has only been one genuinely class player(Henin).

I'm not someone that will take the piss about "men being allowed to play the women's game" etc, but I would like to see them rely on their power less, as they undoubtedly have the talent to do that if they wanted to-as always desire if the key with those two. The attitude they have towards their game is quite arrogant, and that is what grates with me a bit. They seem to take their talent for granted, when they could be creating legacies that will live on for years and years in the women's game.

I tend to agree with you personally on their arrogant attitude in terms of picking and choosing competitions not seeming fully immersed in the tour life... I would like to see them go flat out also. However there is some debate to be had there as well. If they see shortening their schedule or having other interests as a way to have a longer career and still be playing in say five years time it could be good for tennis. The opposite of this is a Henin or Clijsters who went full tilt became disillusioned with the tour life and burned out.

Nadal breaks again in the second set. Murray double faults to lose serve. Very poor. They are a different class. Murray & Nadal are practically the same age. Nadal (and of course Federer) are so good that Murray will never get near winning Wimbledon unless the others get injured.

Does anyone else find Nadal boring to watch? At least compared to other players. Just seems to me that he stands at the baseline smashing balls into the corners most of the time. Clearly not always, and he plays some lovely shots, but I swear a lot of his points are won through sheer strength.

Sadly I think he's going to win Wimbledon and probably go on to dominate world tennis for the next few years. Federer is on a downward slide and Nadal is only twenty-two. Shame, really.
