Wimbledon 2012

Yes!!!

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant from Federer. Legend.

No Nadal or Djokovic in a Grand Slam final for the first time since..2009 I think.

Godger-Tsonga Final

Though I do wonder who the crowd will be with if Murray made it, don't think they've played at Wimbledon. But Wimbledon(well everyone tournament) sure does love the Fed.

Wouldn't be shocked if the crowd supports Federer vs Murray. And as for the French Open crowd, I'd actually be shocked if they supported a Tsonga or a French player over Federer in a final.

Tennis fans are weird*. They don't really seem to do the whole underdog thing. Unless they share a nationality with any given player they seem to all choose one or other of the very best players around and back them, no matter what. Surely at least some of you want Andy Murray to interrupt the procession of trophies won by the usual suspects?

*My opinion of tennis fans is based mainly on this thread but my overall opinion of tennis fans wasn't much better after my one and only visit to Wimbledon.

Also, Federer's serve is something else. The aces don't tell the full story. The amount of serves that don't get returned is amazing. Also, I think he's got to have one of the best second serves around.

Regarding two qf loses in 2010/2011 Fed admits: "People were saying how are we going to have a Wimbledon final without you." Humble.

Anyway, well done Federer! Incredible achievement to make it to his 8th Final.

Glad Federer won this, hoping it's Tsonga that makes it through, can't stand the thought of Murray beating Federer, especially at Wimbledon.

Great match by Federer, fully deserved win. The third set was crucial as I said before. More or less proved today that at his peak Federer would have walked over Djokovic.

Murray is a very meh player though. I bet if Tsonga makes it, many neutrals will support him.

That's not the complete quote, though. He qualified that statement by saying something like "I was fine with, just went on vacation and tried to play better tennis at the next event." Didn't feel as arrogant as that quote sounds.

Does Murray really lead Federer in the head-to-head?

Yeah, there's something beautiful about this. It's like when Scholes came back in January and started fecking up everything in sight.

...not as beautiful as that, though. That was immense.

Would be MUCH better than that for me if Federer wins Wimbledon. He's one of the two sportsman I've grown up idolizing.

Federer was brilliant today, as well as i've seen him in a long time, but Djokovic was very disappointing. There was no real spark in him at all, a lot of unforced errors, and constantly hitting the net. Not a Federer fan so will be cheering on Tsonga/Murray in the final.

To be honest in every sport I love to see the best play and win like they should. There's nothing more disappointing than seeing a great player not achieve what they should. In football it is a bit different because of United and having grudges against certain teams, but I don't think I really know of anyone who cheers on the underdogs simply because they aren't as good.

Also, I share a nationality with Murray, as a Brit, but I hope he never wins anything of note in his entire life, the dour lifeless cnut.

Federer is 14-1 in Grand Slam finals against opponents other than Nadal. His only loss was v Del Potro at 2009 US Open.

He's going to win this title irrespective of who he plays in the final.

Please tell me you just worded that wrong. What's the point in seeing the same people/team just winning all the time. That's like anti-sports.

Murray is complete ball-less. He refuses to take any risks unless he's absolutely up against the wall. Doubt many neutrals would prefer his dire game to Tsonga or Federer who are two of the most delightful players to watch.

Eh? Explain how it is anti-sport?

Wow. Fed could become no.1 if he wins the tournament.

Cmon Jo Wilfred.

He could have all these records to himself:

1. 7th Wimbledon equalling Sampras.

2. World number 1 ranking.

3. Most weeks at number 1 overtaking Sampras.

Do it Federer :D

The whole anti-Murray thing is amusing. He's pretty much as articulate as most sportsmen, but gets dogs abuse as some sort of grunting Scottish ape.

I'd like to see Murray win. He's a very good player who'd have easily had a couple of slams in pretty much any other era. He's also dealt with both the ridiculous hype and the ridiculous backlash from the British media very well over the years.

Personally, I don't hate him. But I find his game dull.

Nadal and Djokovic out of the tournament and Federer in decline in the final. Murray will never have a better chance of winning a Grand Slam.

Come on Tsonga!

I find it very strange too. Especially coming from Brits, when he's up against Swiss/Spanish/Serbian opposition. I don't think you'd get that in any other sport. Which brings me back to my first post in this thread.

I think it's more a Brit thing than a tennis to be honest. I can't imagine anyone from my country wanting an Indian to lose no matter how dull they find his style/game/personality. Similarly, I think it would be impossible to find many Serbs who don't wan't Djokovic to do well.

Fair play. Do think he's fecking brilliant, to be fair. I used to spend hours obsessively practising that one-handed backhand of his. Just quality.

The thing with Paul Scholes' return though is that it was so beautiful that it could've reduced me to tears (not really, but you know what I mean). Just the way the silent hero stepped out after quietly going about being one of the greatest players the league has seen, the mourning that happened after that departure had sank in, the constant pining and re-watching of YouTube videos of him doing that standard cross-field pass to Valencia on the right wing, say, only for him to then return in a time of crisis with everyone writing it off as desperate and absolutely dominate.

It is tragic that we didn't win the league last year in light of that.

Is it anti sport to see Spain win 3 major world tournaments in a row? To see Federer reach his 8th Wimbledon final? To see Tyson decimate boxing? To see Tiger Woods play Golf?

To witness any man dominate a sport, to be THAT fecking good, is not something you see often. There are precious few moments in history when that happens. Federer is the best I've seen, and some say the best ever. Frankly, I just enjoy being part of this moment in history where 'The Best' is playing 'At his best'. And that, logically, extends to any other sport. In theory the thought of one man winning everything sounds boring, but that doesn't actually happen does it? No-one wins EVERYTHING. But on the big stages, damn fecking straight I want the best in the world to show what they can do. Who wouldn't?

Anti-Sport...

He'd probably feel the same about you. I don't understand the hatred forum for him around here. As a British person I'd love to see history being made regardless of how 'dour' he is. Each to their own though.

So true. Imagine the plaudits he would have (deservedly) have gotten.

As for Federer, have you seen many better second serves? I find it amazing how he manages to get free points even on his second.

Also, I don't think the final is a forgone conclusion at all as some are suggesting. Despite today, it doesn't change the fact that Federer is 30, and no matter who he plays it will be a quality player capable of beating him.

4. Biggest shitcnut

But he's already had that sewn up for years. :D

And to think Federer was probably one overhit Benneteau backhand away from an early exit.
