Wilfried Zaha - Sold to Crystal Palace

Saw today's game, which was my first 90-minute watch of him. Not sure how I feel. On the one hand he's an unpredictable dribbler, often inventive with the sudden shift in direction he takes. At other times though, he actually reminded me of Bebe - pacy, leggy and crosses soaring past their targets. Either way, he's raw, that's for sure.

I think that's actually a fair opinion* based on his performance today, despite the hype because he won them promotion. But believe it or not, that wasn't a particularly good showing by his standards. Normally the thing that really makes him stand out for me is that he has an extremely consistent, efficient end product. Always seems to put in a dangerous ball regardless of how successful the flashy stuff beforehand is. Today was just an off-day in that regard.

Not helped by the fact that Palace spectacularly failed to get the ball to him for most of the match. He can't have received more than three decent passes in the entire second half.

I do dislike it when people call players like him 'leggy', though, and talk about them having poor ball control. His ball control is absolutely superb. It's central to all his tricks and dribbling. People seem to have got the notion in their head that only small players dribble, and so when tall players do it, they think it looks clumsy. But it's not at all.

EDIT: *Not the Bebe comparison, which is way overboard - he was still bloody dazzling whenever he got on the ball.

Yeah, but where's Evans from?

Edit - sorry I shouldn't even joke.

I'm actually happy I didn't go to make that joke now, you can take the heat instead :D. This thread has amused me for the past 3 pages I must admit.

Looked great today, little bit of consistency with his crosses and we have got some talent in our hands. Will be interesting to see how he develops, and how he will compare to young wingers like Walcott and the Ox.

Ian Holloway admits he is tempted to ask new Manchester United boss David Moyes if he can borrow Wilfried Zaha next season.
Winger Zaha, who completes a £15million switch to Old Trafford this summer, signed off in style by helping Crystal Palace to victory over Watford in the npower Championship play-off final. Zaha's dart into the Hornets penalty area in the 15th minute of extra time ended with Marco Cassetti bringing him down, with Kevin Phillips dispatching the spot-kick.

"I think he'd be silly to give me him back," Holloway said. "Now we're up it might be realistic, but who knows?"

He added: "He (Moyes) will know the task he's got. Mine will be staying up, his will be winning every week. Good luck to him and good luck to us."

Zaha was in tears after the match, having given his all to ensure his boyhood club would be joining him in the top flight next term.

"I'm speechless," he told Sky Sports 1.

"I'm exhausted and speechless and I don't even know what to say. It's my dream come true and this is all I wanted.

"To leave Palace now, knowing they're in the Premier League, that's all I wanted.

"I told myself I'd give all I can, I've given it 200 per cent and I've wanted it for so long. I just wanted to help out the team and I'm happy we actually made it.

"Walking into the stadium with so many people was amazing and being able to play at such a great ground left me speechless. That's all I wanted."

Cant see it happening.

Watching him yesterday and from various videos that have done the rounds since he signed for us, I'm excited to see him step up at United - he has all the attributes to succeed, he's physically impressive, tricky and he never stops going - he didn't give in till he had the match winning moment sealed. I think he's going to do well here.

Hes not just a trick pony though, he made some fantastic passes through to the lifeless , limp and downright pathetic Wilbraham.

That sort of service our strikers would thrive upon.

Considering how well he was doing against 2 defenders aswell, its certainly impressive. Championship level or not that is not easy to do.

 I bottled it and edited it after a few minutes in the end.

Because if we keep Nani and buy another winger that would make a lot of sense.

Rumours in the press about him going back to Palace on loan, why would we possibly do that?

These rumours only stemmed because of the interview with Holloway after the match yesterday; I really wouldn't read much into it.

To get the thread back on track a little... Imagine we sign no more wide men (or anyone who would force anyone else out onto the wing), and we keep our current wingers. Who do you start on the wings in our first game of the season?

Signs of Valencia regaining form in the last month or so of the season. Nani generally better than him this season but fell well out of favour and was unreliable in terms of form and attitude. Zaha flying, but coming into a new club and a much higher quality league.

I'd be tempted to start Valencia and Nani, on the presumption that by the start of the season they'll both be back in form. But as soon as either was not playing well, I'd drop him for Zaha. Even if that meant playing him in the second game of the season.
You're giving Valencia and Nani one game to show they're in form. A bit over generous for me. If they haven't scored or awaited in the opening ten minutes I'd haul them off and put them on the naughty step.

On Zaha, he looks a talent and a player who could be very useful from the bench against tired defences. One thing Inoticed was his off the ball movement was a bit shit. A number of times somebody got the ball out wide and he sort of just ran alongside him. He was like a FIFA player.

On Evans, he seems a nice chap. An old fashioned British gentleman.

If it doesn't matter, why the feck are you going on about it?

This all started because someone mentioned Evans in a list of young British talent, which another twat couldn't allow to go past without trying to act the smartarse about.

The poster in question said it was pedantic! But he is right. Don't blame him or me for it. I honestly don't know why people have to get worked up about it. Surely by now we've learnt from 1000's years of history that Nationalism is not a good thing. It's all bullshit. Peace, love, live & let live, etc. Is doesn't matter if you're Irish, English, Welsh or Scottish; we're all a bunch of useless cnuts.
And Zaha looks very promising.

The world never has, and never will, work like that. We're social animals, predisposed to form group identities - to think in terms of 'them' and 'us'. That's not going to change.

Ask those ********* Scousers. Or the plastics at Stamford Bridge. Let alone the bitters down the road, with their half empty stadium, and their delusions of grandeur!

The thinking was more that playing Zaha in the very first game of the season might be too much too soon. I have confidence that Valencia and Nani will, with a decent pre-season, be back to decent form. So you play them until they have a wobble, and Zaha is ready to step into the breach as soon as they do.

I was contrasting to the approach of allowing wingers to carry on starting game after game despite being in terrible form, as we did with Valencia for much of this season gone.

He won't wait until there's a 'wobble'. He'll come on as a sub as Ronaldo did in his first game no doubt.

He'll be a great sub, PL defenders don't know much about him right now and he's not a great prospect to have running at you when you're tired

Not a bad idea to loan him back if we are looking at loans for the kid. But I can't see it happening, with the current wide options. And looking at this season he should be able to pick up games with United. Best course forward I think would be to give him half a season at least to get used to United, whether he gets lots of game time or not. Then once he has settled here look at whether we want to loan him or have him in or around the first team for the rest of the season.

Looks like the new Black Ronaldo -- other than doing the inevitable stepovers, range of hairstyles and ability finishing and heading... very similar.

Don't think we'll get to see the best of him until halfway into the season. He played 49(1) games for Palace this season and looked tired in the latter half before coming on his own in the play-offs. He will be one of the main men for England in the Euro U21 championship and would need a good rest after that.

It will take a couple of months to bed in with the new club and teammates. Some sub appearance initially and then we should unleash beast on the tired league defenses in the later of the part of the season.

He has already made around 150 appearances for Palace. Don't think he needs another loan.

I am very excited at see him in a United shirt.

Made plenty of people look silly in those gifs. Hopefully he can do the same sort of thing in the premier league for us.
