Wilfried Zaha - Sold to Crystal Palace

2 wrongs don't make a right. The one game ban was probably the right call, the other decision is a joke.

This is the organisation which gave Ben Thatcher an 8 game ban for a violent physical assault which, had it taken place on the street, would have landed him in jail for a year.

The FA are very concerned about player welfare, but public relations is, of course, far more important.

Would it be a red even if Ref had seen it ?

Of course.

By the letter of the law, a player just swearing alone (including offensive gestures) warrants an immediate sending off; but of course many referees let this slide being that's it's such a common occurrence on the pitch. The FA takes a more severe approach when such gestures are directed at the opposition support though as they see this as potential incitement to large-scale violence and as such a health and safety risk. I've no doubt that giving the middle finger to the opposition support would result in an immediate sending off should it be witnessed firsthand by an official.

I think we all accept that the FA is an inconsistent joke of an organisation. That aside the 1 game ban is about right. No point in comparing it to completely unrelated incidents as they never seem to make sense.

Is it really harsh?

A one game ban for giving the opposition fans the middle seems fair to me. What would be an appropriate punishment if not this? Half a game ban?

Maybe I'm being simplistic but I just find this kind of thing really hard to care about but mainly just don't see the point of a ban. What mainly gets me though is how a lot of this comes from fans reactions to it when usually they cause it in the first place by giving so much abuse, I just don't see how they can complain about that kids are in the crowd etc... when they will have been swearing at the guy for 90 minutes.

The only thing that worries me about Zaha is that I think he has a clumsy look about him, as if he's not fully in control of what he's doing. He might get away with it in the Championship but I'm worried that he'll struggle at first when he comes here. His game definitely needs a lot of work, but he does seem to have all the tools.

Must admit I think that too. But it works so often it makes me think there must be more to it than luck.

The 1 game ban seems about right to me.

Very bad timing though, if the game is being televised.

Saw him in the flesh for the first time on Sunday, did a lot of stepovers and fell over quite a lot, and threw his toys out of his pram a few times over absolutely nothing

Are the Leeds fans complaining about kids in the crowd being subjected to Zaha's finger? Has the FA's response been prompted by complaints from the Leeds fans? I've not heard of such.

Inciting the opposition fans is something the FA don't take lightly on account of the perceived health and safety risk; the fact that Zaha did it with a middle finger just makes it that much worse. Do you honestly expect the FA to allow players to swear at opposition supporters free from punishment?

I agree that you're being simplistic.

I love hearing about his petulant spats, it'll be interesting to see if he pulls anything like it at United. I bet there'll be some contrast the minute he's wearing our colours.

Glad he's banned so he learns now, not in a United shirt
Yeh, best if he has this learning experience before he joins us. The media spot light will only intensify once he joins here and these type of things will bring larger bans (ie Rooney swearing at the camera)

Looking forward to this signing but I hope people don't expact too much. Will take him a couple years of wildly inconsistant performances before he finds his feet probably.

It will be interesting to see how he does considering the amount of wingers/choices of forward line you are able to make. There are people who've been excellent in the Championship and flopped at PL level and there have been players who've managed to make the step up and be excellent in both. For a young player what you'd expect is that they'd be excellent some weeks and poor the next as they begin to come to terms to a different level of football. Considering the amount of formations/players you could pick it could have a negative effect, and it could be positive. He's only 20 so there would still be time to loan him out in his 1st or 2nd season if it would benefit him and the club.

I honestly can't wait. I reckon he'll be a starter for us from the off. I predict a successful preseason tour to which Fergie will be creaming himself.

I have high hopes for him, but I'll still be patient if it doesn't start off fantastically. He has all the attributes needed to be a top player for us, and I think he can be the type of winger again that can raise everyone from their seats as soon as he receives the ball.

So wait... Zaha gave the middle finger and gets a 1 match ban, while Callum McManaman puts a guy in the hospital possibly ending his career and gets nothing...

Well done FA clowns :wenger:!!

Agree with you. Although you have to think, playing and training alongside better players he will surely improve. Add that to him effectively getting more space as players won't be doubling up on him like in the championship and we can hopefully see a big improvement from him.

Lets just hope his decision making is up to scratch.

I was at the Amex for the Brighton V Palace game on sunday.

Palace were pretty dreadful, Zaha showed a lot of promise but looked frustrated with his team mates. He tried to take on the whole team by himself on more than one occasion. Overall it wasn't his day but he did look threatening at times in the match. Not as threatening as Matthew Upsons crazy header which forced PIG to make a quality save.

This comparison probably won't go down that well but he reminded me of Obertan's more exciting moments during this match. But Zaha will obviously be a star as he is English and doesn't have a head shaped like a kidney bean.

Starting for the U21s against Romania. It's on ESPN for those interested. Not sure when kick off is. Guessing in about half an hour.

#EnglandU21s team v Romania: Butland, Clyne, Rose, Chalobah, Wisdom, Dawson, Lansbury, Henderson (c), Zaha, Shelvey, Sterling

That's a very good team actually. A lot of promising players, the lack of an out-and-out striker is evident though.

Decent team apart from 22 year old Lansbury. Shouldn't his place be used for promising up and coming younger players? You don't need to be expert to work out he is never going to be good enough for the senior team.

Lots of dross on the bench and in reserve as well.

Exciting player that will commit defenders and get people on the edges of their seats but he needs to learn to get his head up more and find a team mate.

Nice ball into Pato. He passes when he wants... He passes when he waaaaants.
