Why did we buy Fred?

It strikes me the most that he wasn't that bad when he played. For me it is not normal for any club to pay 50mil for a player who doesn't play at all.
One thing we must avoid. To continue with this situation in next season. I guess we can still get 30 mil for him. Then sell him or play him. This is really strange situation with him.

Who ever decided on buying this guy, should be fired. And the scouts who have recommended him should follow suit. 50m and we can't play him when we are on our bare bones in midfield? Pathetic state of events.

Agreed. He was a bit sloppy at times but seriously no worse than pereira has ever shown. I can only think they’re trying to protect him until he’s fully up to speed in the league. He’s surely going to get minutes soon though considering the situation.

Maybe Fred isn't playing because he's busy playing Fred the Red role instead ? At the end we don't know who wears the costume. :D
Its so obvious now you've said it. £50m for a mascot sounds ridiculous until you remember who's in charge of our transfers.

I'd imagine he'll start on Wed night, options are pretty much bare minimum. If he doesn't, it might indicate he's a goner in the summer.

It begs the question what is taking him quite so long to not even be worthy of a run-out these days. 10 PL apps, 3 CL, 1 FA Cup and 1 League Cup is ridiculous for a player in our plans, and only three under Ole in 14 games (some of which you'd think he'd have been useful in, such as today when we've got two injured CMs) suggests more than acclimatisation to me. I hope you're right about the future though; if he doesn't get a go in the next few games he's in a true deep freeze.

I think Ole has to work on him and get him in the side, we can't afford to throw away all the players from the old regimes that we spent a fortune on.

At least we know where he stands in terms of midfield options - stone dead last pick.

I’m not sure what he would’ve done differently to Andreas (who’s disappointed me today) as we’ve seen little of both to make a proper judgement.

I’m sure he’ll get minutes in the next game. I heard Ole mention 3 hamstring injuries in the post match comments, but do we have any indication on how long Matic and Herrera will be out for?

What's this based on?

Based on the fact that Ole will most likely get the job and he doesn’t fancy him at all. He has been able to get minutes even in this injury crisis, I don’t think he will make the cut for next season.

Gotta get him back on that good Juice regimen. Worst case scenario he gets caught and gets suspended... what's the difference, he's already not playing.

He's obviously having a hard time adjusting, there's no shame in that. It appears to me that instead of hanging him out to dry like another manager would, he's getting time away from the first team to acclimatise and get settled.

Real possibility of him, Mctom and Andreas playing in a midfield 3 against PSG in a few weeks :nervous: . It is weird though that he's not playing even at a time when injuries are mounting.

Does the coaching staff speak the language which Fred speaks? Far as I know he is still learning english, so does anyone of the staff speak his language? Can lack of communication be part of this dilemma?

I'm actually dying to see him - considering that Ole has gotten the players performing better; I just want him to get on the pitch with a level of freedom.

truly mystified. hopefully the manager will give us an update in the next press conferences. we'll at least know from his tone whether Fred is in future plans or he's not doing enough behind the scenes.

I think there's something to do with the fact he had a child 1 month ago. Maybe OGS give him some time to spend with his wife and child and/or he isn't mentally ready/focused. I still think he will make it at United (hope so).

Did we bought him just to pray for us before the game ? 4 players out injured and this guy still sit on the bench , He must have been fecking dogshite in training . I would love to work like that though. Earning loads of cash doing feck all.

I have a feeling you'll see him come on as a sub against Palace and then as a starter against PSG. He's no Pogba replacement but offers a range of passing that Perreira and McT don't.

He's clearly struggled to adapt to English football, Ole recently compared him to Forlan and Veron in that sense, but away in Paris will be a very different game and without Pogba/Herrera and Matic, I'm sure he will play, but he'll need a bit of time against Palace to build himself up.

I don't think we can read too much into the fact that Fred wasn't brought on today. Liverpool are a massive opponent. Fred needs to be eased in against opponents like Palace.

Absolutely agree, Perreira was brought on in front of him as he has played this fixture before and is a bit more settled within the club. To bring on someone that is struggling to adapt into such a massive match with no prior warning would have been madness.

I refuse to believe Fred is as bad as our management team is making him out to be. To give Sanchez and lukaku a chance and not Fred some game time seems conflicting. With the injuries in the team, no doubt we will have to see him sooner rather than later

It's strange that a £50mil player sit on the bench when academy player like McT and Pereira play ahead of him.

I really think Fred is not that bad to the extend that he is behind our academy players.

Something is not right here, maybe he has attitude problem or already request for transfer in the summer.

He is our ace in the pocket for the business end of the season. We will unleash the Mighty Fred onto the world soon.

Fair point. I want to see Fred being given a run of games and judge him again.

He must be absolute turd in training if Perreira is ahead of him in pecking order - not because Perreira is particularly crap but he's made costly errors this season.

Yeah. Everyone looked shite under Mou, so not much could be said really, but the fact he has barely been on the bench since Ole took over speaks volumes. Buying "star players" from smaller leagues is always a risky move though. In Freds case you can see he has a good pass on him and a decent engine, but the tempo of the league seems overwhelming to him and he has always looked very uncomfortable in possession here.

Now though would be a good fecking time to step up and justify that transfer fee

Loads of players take time to adapt, remember Lindeloff last season didn't appear in the prem for at least a couple of months, then actually I think he was brought on as a sub against pool, then he was shaky and everyone slagged him off, now he's probably your most improved player. Fred just needs a bit of time to adapt and coming on against Liverpool was not the time, Palace however and Southampton at home maybe.

I reckon the bolded bit is absolutely correct - he just needs to be eased in.

But Lindeloff still featured in other competitions, Fred is barely getting a sniff and this despite what we play. Two different situations

When did it become standard to be writing players off in their first season? I mean you got doubts and the odd few kneejerkers but it seems like most want him out... Weird.

This is anything but standard.

Its one thing if a player is playing their first season after a transfer and not doing that well, but not even getting a look in while the kids play is pretty much unprecedented for a big signing.

For me he's had 1 or 2 encouraging games so I'd be picking him. The fact he isnt getting minutes when we're so thin in his area says a lot.

Lindelof made 13 starts last season because when our first choice CBs were injured he came in. Exactly what Fred isnt doing right now, McTominay and Andreas are instead.

What’s odd is that he is never getting minutes yet is still on the bench, that suggests that maybe he is purely seen as a Pogba deputy rather than someone who can come on and do a more defensive or auxiliary role, for example.

Given that Pogba is undroppable right now and that every point counts he’s not getting a look in.

Fred has not been doing the basics. What’s so mind bending about him not playing?

I am totally baffled too. This is unprecedented, or at least I don't remember such expensive signee in mid 20s travelling with the squad but eventually warming the bench even when options run out on the manager. He has been here for 8 months ffs. Nobody knows what the feck is going on in training. He is not injured, I don't know if there is relationship problem between Ole and him. Yesterday the team was crying out loud for help, any help. Yet, manager doesn't trust him. jeez.

True if you base your ideas on just one game, which is one of toughest of the season so far.

As I said earlier Ole has already said he's having trouble adjusting to Prem football, so why would you introduce him in a home game against your biggest rivals with very little prep. Why don't you wait for a few more games and see what happens against Palace Soton and PSG, you'll have a better idea by then.

If the coaches don't think he's ready now, you'd have to wonder if he has a future here at all!

With Andreas starting and looking out of his depth, goodness knows what they think of Fred.
