My thoughts on four favourites are the four current leaders in the poll, so not surprised at all. I went for Argentina, for some reason I just fancy them this time even though the masses would likely go for Brazil. Germany and Spain will do great, but I fancy a team from that region to win it.

Brazil for me I think.

They're an actual team, not blessed with the amazing individuals of past teams but they fight for each other. Scolari is a good international coach and knows how to win a World Cup and he'll have them about as motivated as possible. I think they'll attack every match like they did at the Confederations Cup and against the big teams it'll be like the final against Spain where they were magnificent. The crowd will pull them through as well.

Watched a documentary charting Brazil's progress over last 36 months. Looks like Scolari has got something very special going within the Brazil squad. They are literally unbeaten in ages, their squad spirit and togetherness cant be bettered and of course they will be powered on by home support.

I think the occasion will give birth to a new generation of great Brazilians as young potential will be inspired and accelerate to their true potential. In a sense, it could be the international version of Athletico Madrid, a team with no egos' because they possess only one true superstar.

It often sounds like a lazy statement, especially because they are the host nation, but I cant see beyond Brazil for this world cup. I think they will win and it will be a glorious and romantic journey to greatness.

Spain.

Underrated teams:
Spain (should be considered the favourites)
Italy (they're better than most realise)
Portugal (very solid defensively with Ronaldo up front)

Overrated teams:
Germany
Belgium
Holland
England (by the British media at least)

That gives predictions and lets you work out different scenarios.
I used that gadget to do a "World Cup underdog" prediction

For group stages, win, draw or lose
If the underdog has less than 15% chance of winning, they lose
If the underdog has 15-29% chance of winning, the game is a draw
If the underdog has 30% or more chance of winning, they win

For knockout stages
If the underdog has less than 40% chance of winning, they lose
If the underdog has 40% or more chance of winning, they win

End up with very interesting World Cup :)

Group A
Brazil 9pts
Croatia 4 pts
Cameroon 2 pts
Mexico 1 pt

Group B
Spain 5pts
Netherlands 5pts
Chile 3pts
Australia 1pt

Group C
Ivory Coast 5pts
Colombia 3pts
Greece 3pts
Japan 2pts

Group D
Uruguay 9pts
Italy 6pts
England 3pts
Costa Rica 0pts

Group E
France 5pts
Ecuador 5pts
Switzerland 2pts
Honduras 2pts

Group F
Argentina 9pts
Nigeria 4 pts
Iran 2pts
Bosnia 1pt

Group G
Germany 7pts
Ghana 4pts
Portugal 3pts
USA 1pt

Group H
Belgium 7pts
Russia 3pts
South Korea 2pts
Algeria 2pts

Second Round

BRAZIL vs Netherlands
Ivory Coast vs ITALY
FRANCE vs Nigeria
GERMANY vs Russia
SPAIN vs Croatia
URUGUAY vs Colombia
ARGENTINA vs Ecuador
BELGIUM vs Ghana

Quarter Finals

BRAZIL vs Italy
France vs GERMANY
SPAIN vs Uruguay
Argentina vs BELGIUM

Semi Finals

BRAZIL vs Germany
Spain vs BELGIUM

3rd place

GERMANY vs Spain

Final

BRAZIL vs Belgium

Brazil win the tournament, Belgium the underdogs, Germany 3rd Spain 4th and England crash out in the group stage

Interesting :)

Voted Spain.

In reality though the South American team do have a big advantage.

France are the team I think will surprise people. Easy group and (probably) an easy first knockout game. At that point they have a bit of momentum behind them...

Belgium will be a big disappointment, I think.

Argentina
Close to home, nowhere near as much pressure as Brazil have as hosts
Fabulous attacking possibilities tho i don't expect massive thing from Messi
Reckon it could be Lavezzi's year along with Aguero
Fine defence too but a couple of injuries would see midfield looking shakey unless they can work it that Mascherano gets it first...
Like England to be going a bit further than people expect - quarters maybe - from there on in its a toss-up

Germany, although the case for Brasil is obvious and Argentina and Spain are both very strong.

The Germans probably have the toughest group to deal with, which will serve them as they work their way through to the final.

If Argentina win a Brazilian World Cup there'll be war. But they do have a very good team offensively and solid in defence too.
Brazil haven't got the best squad but the home advantage could help them.

I think the humidity will take a toll on the European teams as the tournament progresses, so the likes of Spain and Germany will be at a disadvantage if they're facing a South American team in the QF's for example.

I have to agree this, apart from the Messi bit, This is going to be Messi's World Cup I feel.

I really cannot see past Brazil but it's a cup competition, one bad game and they could be out. Spain could have quite conceivably lost to Paraguay in 2010 if only Cardozo scored that penalty.

Not really, there isn't any hatred between the two nations. There is a rivalry and in that sense we don't want that to happen but if it did, it would be well received. If Argentina are knock out of a tournament, they usually cheer for Brazil and vice a versa.

In order, but tiered:

Tier 1 - Favorites (Only winning it is a win)
Recent Examples: Spain 2010, Germany 2010
Spain, Brazil
-Home team, and the best squad and winner of the last three. At gunpoint, I'd go with Spain.

Tier 2 - A Good Chance (Losing in the finals would be an excellent result, though)
Recent Examples: Netherlands 2010, Germany's not so talented 2002 finalists
Argentina, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium
-Originally wasn't going to include Belgium, but 4 talented CB's across the back and Hazard, Lukaku is a great start to a team that could shock a favorite or two on the counter.
-Most likely the winner comes from this group. I'd go for France, myself, since their CB's are capable of short-term brilliance, they have an athletic and talented group of CM's and Ribery-Benzema-Griezmann at least looks good on paper. Easy group, too.

Tier 3 - A Chance (but Semis would be a win)
Recent Examples: Uruguay 2010, South Korea 2002
Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, England, Croatia, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Japan, Russia
-Any of the first 3 South American teams could actually win it, along with the Swiss too, who have a great manager, did well in qualifying, have an incredible defensive record over the last 2 World Cups, a midfield that plays together for Napoli, a fresh Shaqiri, but no striker. Give them Chapuisat and a time machine and I'd have them between Portugal and Belgium in tier 2.

Tier 4 - Could theoretically pull a Greece/Denmark (QF loss to the Champions where they are the better team is their realistic but optmistic limit)
Recent Examples: Paraguay 2010 (took Spain to the limit), USA 2002 (outplayed Germany in their QF loss)
Korea, USA, Mexico, Bosnia, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Greece
-Bosnia have enough top-end talent for Tier 3, but I think attacking-oriented teams have a bit less of a chance of a cinderella run in the knockout
-The African teams have decent front sixes, but ugly backlines. Same for Korea. All of them have the midfield quality to outplay a much better team once or twice (like Russia's teams have at times in recent years), but you can't go too far with a hideous backline.

Tier 5 - Under no circumstances whatsoever are they even making the semis.
Recent Examples: New Zealand 2010 (no losses) Trinidad 2006 (did well)
-Algeria, Costa Rica, Honduras, Australia, Iran
Making it past the group stage will be massive for any of those tier 5.

OT, but I thought it was interesting. Which countries are willing to sacrifice more to win the WC?

For England the "passion" seems to be stifled by stingy, miserly mentality

Some of the passionate Chile fans might sacrifice an arm or a leg, literally, if it meant World Cup glory

Spain will win it. Criminally underrated again.

yes x10. nobody talks about portugals defence, it was amongst the best at euro 2012 and is extremely solid. That midfield can provide more then enough ammunition for the frontlines as well.

I'd have to say Argentina because of their group and the possibility of a relatively easy second round match. Brazil on the other hand could line up against Holland or Spain, and after that it'll be Colombia or England/Uruguay/Italy in QF. That's not easy, even if you have home advantage.

Brazil or Argentina. I think they've both got a great chance to win it, especially as the Six World Cups that have been played in South America have all been won by a South American team. I would of thought Spain had the biggest chance out of the European bunch, but Xavi is no longer the force he Once was.

4 years ago, no European team had ever won a World Cup outside Europe, result: all European final.

My thoughts entirely. I remember not many fancying them for the Euro 2012, and they just cruised to the title. I believe that the same will happen this time too. Their squad is by far the strongest of any country.

Just looked at their squad... something else. They could stroll to the semis if they win their group.
