Who are the players behind the Perisic and Matic smokescreens?

I don't think there's any smoke screens. I genuinely believe those are the two missing links.

But for the sake of this thread, I'll say Sanchez and Fabinho.

I am disappointed to say I agree. Jose's ESPN interview admitting it's been a tough window seems to prove it.

But I can't wrap my head around why we don't have or aren't pursuing other options? Maybe Jose isn't mentioning them to avoid difficult last minute bids. But still with so many injured players we need recruits...we can't just get by til January.

Perisic is smokescreen for matic and viceversa. Seriously i expect united to have a plan b to these decent but hardly wc players

I'm hoping Mendy or Alex Sandro or some other attacking wing back (Bertrand, Tierney etc.) is who we'll turn to after Perisic.

I'm not sure we'll get another MF to be honest. We got 5 players (Pog, Ander, Felli, Carrick, Pereira) for what is 2 sometimes 3 positions. We're fine there for one more season and we can give Pereira the chances he's shown he deserves.

Any precident for Jose and transfer windows (ie is he usually quite methodical and gets who the major links are vs out of the blue signings)?

Please God. I hope smokescreens are legit. These 2 would have us back in the CL with a bang.

Smokescreen must be the most used word this transfer window around here.

and probably a concept that isn't even true. Why would we need smokescreens for our transfer? If the agents/clubs of whatever players we were dealing with wanted/needed to entice a bidding war they would leak it anyway regardless if we are negotiating other deals concurrently

to fool the media? Why? I'd imagine United loves to be the news, and again the other side could/would still leak it unless its beneficial for them to keep it under wraps as well

Like others I dont think there are any smokescreens its usually the press putting 2+2 together. I would bet every player an English club, and some foreign ones have been after one of the dailies have mentioned we were in for, or have been snubbed etc. All we can gather is Perisic and Morata have been chased as every outlet have covered this, so you would assume its right. Keane was linked as he was ex Utd. Lukaku was well hid, maybe we dont go after Keane was part of the deal, who knows? What I would also bet is we buy at least another player even though Mourinho is talking how hard it is etc. The only one I couldnt understand was the Griezmann one, as surely he knew well in advance before it made the press that Atleticos ban would stand. Did one side get cold feet on the deal? Was there even a deal to be had? Be interesting to see what happens next summer.

Morcambe and Wise. Eric in the midfield and Ernie on the wing.

We wanted Perisic clearly, but it's not happening at the price they're wanting. We seem to have no backup, so it'll just be Matic or Dier (neither are coming). I hope we have a backup for them at least.

why do fans try and convince themselves smoke screens exist?
I'm as cynical about the transfer season as anyone. But smokescreens do exist. It's a very basic negotiating tactic to not make yourself look desperate.

United have sealed all their leaks in recent months. The Lindelof and Lukaku deals came with relatively little forewarning. Given that, I'd suspect that the more widely covered a transfer story, the more likely it is to be a foil for a primary target.

The term 'smokescreen' is itself misleading, though. It's not about misdirecting anyone, least of all the public or idiots on the internet. It's about giving the impression of being relatively uninterested in the clubs we really want to buy from. If Twitter journalists report that Morata is first choice, then Everton are less likely to play hardball over Lukaku.

We need goals in this team.

We will be relying on Lukaku to score 50 Premier League goals if we want a shot at winning the league.

I can't see anyone else chipping in much.

Whilst I've grown tired of the term 'smokescreen', there must be something in the Perisic delays.

Knowing how tough the market is at the moment, we surely would have worked harder to meet the gap between our offer and Inter's valuation. A few million difference would have surely been in both clubs' interests to get resolved early to avoid the disruption it causes as pre-season begins.

The fact we didn't bite the bullet and push it through before Inter's tour makes me believe we're still pursuing something else. That 'something else' deal is also clearly very difficult...

Matic feels like it's genuine, but Chelsea are obviously going to make life difficult for us. It doesn't really matter too much to them, as he's become a bit-part player for them anyway since Bakayoko's arrival. I suspect we'll get him at a slightly cheaper price next month.

Feels like Perisic(or a left wing player in general) is more of a priority for Mou than a DM/CM

His latest quotes sound a lot like he's telling Woody to just pay over the odds if he has to, just bring in the player he wants quickly

Considering Perisic is not a difficult deal to do; I am certain he is a smokescreen. I believe we would love Neymar or Bale and are probably negotiating for both. That's my genuine belief. Think we'll end up with Perisic though.
