Right lads. Cesc has rejected us, perhaps unsurprisingly.

We're now around a week away from the season's curtain raiser, so there's not really much time left to do business. Given that our start to the season is so tough, I personally don't think our lack of activity is great, but there we go.

My feeling is that it's too late in the day to sign the top drawer player that we're crying out for in midfield. I've said all along that I'd prefer United to keep their cash in the bank and try again next summer instead of spunking cash on the likes of Fellaini and Baines.

My question is, what will you now be happy with in terms of transfers before the window closes (realistically)?

I'll be happy with whatever United decide to do this summer, if we don't bring in the top quality players that we all want then it means there's opportunities for some kids. I know that won't appease the masses, but I get joy from seeing young prospects step up the ranks.

Nothing much has changed imo. Start of the window, we needed a top CM to come in, we still do. I'd say that's what will still represent a good summer.

Are there any youngsters in the squad capable of stepping up in midfield? Sadly, we're going to be well short in there.

I'm not even saying it as a piss take, but we're staring down the barrel of more Giggs/Jones in midfield.

Fellaini and another midfielder , does not have to be a marquee player. But i also would not be fussed if we get no one.

I think if we don't sign a midfielder it'll be a massive feck up on the clubs behalf for the Summer. So basically, get a midfielder.

The club has to send out a message with Rooney - I don't see how we can sell to Chelsea without this window being deemed an abject failure.

If we lose Rooney this window has been a massive failure, Fellaini signing or not.

Keeping Rooney will be a good summer for me. The guy's top drawer, couldn't give a shit about his personal problems.

Gustavo / Marchisio / Modric etc etc etc. But if not, so long as we don't buy Fellaini, then I'd settle for what we have.

If we sell Shrek though, we may need to strengthen, unless Moyes has the cojones to promote the youngsters to effectively the 4th choice striker position.

Nothing I have observed makes me think Moyes is an inspirational coach (likewise his beloved coaching staff) but happy to see what he does...but no Fellaini!

Rooney simply cannot be sold to Chelsea, that does without saying.

What exactly have you observed in order to make this statement?

Either I think we should go for Luiz Gustavo or keep the money and go for Gündogan or another high profile midfielder next summer.

We won the league with this midfield last year so why shouldn't we be able to do it again?

Maybe bring some fresh blood from the reserves or youth team in to see what they can do, especially Januzaj is someone I would love to see getting a lot of first team football this season.

Main priority to make it a good summer should be keeping Rooney - said it a few times, it'll be a disaster for us if he signs for Chelsea.

Then we can work from there, of course we would ideally like to sign a central midfielder, maybe even two. If it's possible that we can do a deal for a top level player, who we haven't already tried to sign, for example Modric, then we should go for it, act quickly and get the deal done.

If we can't get our top level player who we really want, then don't spend money for spending sake - that's pointless and we'd essentially be repeating City's mistakes from last summer. We shouldn't panic buy. However, if Moyes feels that Fellaini is the right player for us, then we should get him; however we still need to try and tie the deal up as quickly as possible, get him involved in training and get ready for the new season.

Right now, I'm going to completely change my mind. Even though I hate the guy, we'd probably best off trying to keep Rooney. We're too late to get a world class replacement for him and with no quality midfielder looking likely, we've significantly weakened compared to our rivals over the summer. Chelsea have effectively made one world class signing with Mourinho and City have spent wisely in my opinion. Losing Rooney to Chelsea, losing Fergie and not buying a midfielder would represent an awful summer and would be a worst case scenario. Best case scenario has gone now but Marchisio / Gustavo arriving and Rooney staying would still be fine.

Keep Rooney.

Buy a defensive midfielder. As much as I'd have loved Thiago/Fab, we need a player like Khedira/Gustavo more imo. If we get either of those two and keep Rooney I'll be over the moon.

What does this even mean?

It means I don't think he inspires. But I'd be delighted if at United he proved that he was inspirational. What the hell is wrong with that? I don't want him to fail, for chrissake, I want him to win everything! Like I said, it'd only be disappointing as a fan if we signed Fellaini.

What do you want? That I state that I have no opinion on Moyes? That he's the business?

We had the best manager ever last season.

I hate the prick, but we absolutely have to keep him at this stage. Been a shite summer thus far.

Well no, I just don't understand the basis for your opinion. I don't really understand the context in which you don't think he inspires when we haven't even started the season yet. He certainly inspired Everton to overachieve time after time and Sir Alex obviously thought he had the right personality to inspire the club after he had left.

Well, I have no doubts that we'll sign a midfielder, even if it's Fellaini which I'd personally be happy with. In terms of central midfielders, the only one we really have who could potentially come in and have a chance is Petrucci. But I wouldn't even want to hazard a guess at how highly the club rate him but I assume he's someone that's rated considering he's still here at his age. I remember when we signed him from Roma, the Coach or Director was angry because he thought he would go on to be worth 100 times the £195k we paid for him so you never know.

Id be happy with keeping Rooney now.

Don't think we should waste money on a 3rd/4th choice signing like Fellaini, obviously he would improve us but he's no world class player, would rather give youth ago, or hopefully Anderson can keep fit.

We need to asses are options during the season and enter January/next summer with a much better plan because as far as it looks its failed this time round.

One thing I can't take anymore is this 2/3 week long media frenzy chase for a player for it too then sizzle out.

There's no way in hell that Fellaini would come in and be 3rd or 4th choice in midfield.

Keep Rooney. Summer has been unsuccessful to say the least.

Think he meant that he's our 3rd/4th choice player to sign.

Ah, fair enough. The thing is, the number of times top clubs have signed players in the past who weren't first choice must be countless. It doesn't mean they haven't gone on to have great careers at those clubs, the only real difference here is that we are aware that the player was not top of our priority list.

Well yeah, I'm not judging him at United obviously. How's having an opinion on Moyes' "previous" that different from having an opinion on a new player coming in? I guess I don't buy into the "he did the best he could at Everton with the financial constraints placed on him". Anyway, I did say that was what I thought, I didn't declare that Moyes is unequivocably uninspirational!

Because it looks like Chelsea and City may have gotten their act together this season.
We had the best manager ever last season.

So we basically only won the league because of SAF and Chelsea and City messing it up?

I think that's a bit too simplistic.

Do I think we need improving in midfield?

Of course, especially when it comes to Europe we are miles behind the other big teams and need to strengthen if we want to win another CL in the near future but in the league we rarely ever meat teams that totally dominate us in midfield so I feel the lads are good enough to win us the league again this year.

Get a quality midfielder. Be prepared to spend big and get a central midfielder of real quality in. A good midfielder like fellaini who provides another option would be a welcome bonus.

Like who, Tunnicliffe? The time to go with youth was when we had midfielders with the ability of Pogba in the ranks, now I don't see any central midfielder, bar potentially Petrucci, who is anywhere neardeserving of a place in United's team.

There were lots of factors as to why we won the league last season but SAF and our opposition underperforming were certainly among them. Even the most blinkered United fan must be able to see that.

No doubt about it. Our rivals were poor last season.

...which is in contrast to my thoughts on the Champions League matches last season. I thought in the group stage that the opposition ripped through our midfield. Conversely, against Real, we played well. Phil Jones, anyone?
