What DOES he have to do?

To humor the OP, if the Liverpool massacre somehow galvanized us and we went on a great winning streak, playing brilliant football both in defense and attack, and Ole started using his squad better...then yeah. I'd be inclined to say he could keep his job.

That wont happen though, unless he swaps out his entire coaching team, and even then it would take some time to stamp it into the players

Hes had 3 years now and should have figured this out a long time ago himself

Obvious we are a counter attacking side.

So no pressing, no high line. This will help slab head too.

Get our star attackers acting on instinct as our coaches are unable to come up with a proper plan. Vicious counter attacks in other words.

Pace. Ronaldo, Rashford and Martial.

What about the lower teams?

Let them have the ball. Only burnely, Watford and Newcastle go long these days. Most teams want to play or will even press.

We can't keep possession, we can't press, so just sit back and counter.

Our performances would have to massively improve. The team would need to be stop giving up chance after chance every game. Every team we play against gets multiple easy counters against us. This is the most alarming thing for me and needs to be fixed asap.

We'd have to make far more high quality chances per game. You rarely ever see any nice passing triangles from us. We wait for Rashford or Greenwood to dribble the whole opposition and score, or wait for Bruno to eventually get a hero ball right. No more shooting constantly from 20-25 yards multiple times a match as well. Being able to keep the ball for more than 10-15 seconds would also be a huge plus.

Genuinely if he won every game for the rest of the year, you would still want him sacked?
Yup. He won 12 or 13 in a row when he became a manager, and it was a mistake to give him the permanent position.

We know his limitations. We won’t ever challenge for the big trophies with him. So there is literally nothing he can do to change my mind. If he lucks a few matches in a row like he did back then, it changes nothing in the grand scheme of things.

It's too late. This was meant to be a title challenge season and it's looking like a battle for top 4 9 games in.

He got Ronaldo, Sancho and Varane and is in a battle for top 4. Embarrassing.

This is what he needs to do...

I think I must be the last. I was very much Ole in. I changed when I read a post somewhere here where the poster was saying that club has accepted mediocrity and expecting fans old and young to live off past glories rather than making new glories for the younger fans to experience. It was a very good post, but I can't find it.

That is when I realized I had been delusional for a long time.

Then came Saturday.

I love Ole as the player but now I see clearly that he never was capable of being the manager of Manchester United, and now it all looks so horribly embarrassing.

I was, in hindsight, completely mad. - and unfortunately so is the ownership, management and organization of the club in so many ways that have been pointed out over the last week in some excellent posts.

We are a mess from top to bottom and it makes me a little bit sad.

Genuinely if he won every game for the rest of the year, you would still want him sacked?
He won't.

It's like asking what Lingard has to do to be our main number 10. He could have a run of great form to impress people in the short run but he's not good enough.

It would help if he completely changed the coaching staff, at least then we'd see that serious changes were being made. If Ole's not going to go then the next best thing is removing the coaches that have failed and getting the best new ones that we can.

Even that seems extremely unlikely though

Win the next 2 and he should be given the season, otherwise he should be sacked.

Put on a great tactical display against Tottenham aka trying to exploit their weakness while covering our own and coming out with a win without looking like a team of strangers playing together.

Win away at Atalanta and he has practically qualified from the group. Win today and he shows he can fight for top 4.

I don't think it is a good time to replace him. Utd would have more managers to chose from next summer.

If he cannot win the next 2 games then he should be replaced reguardless of who is available.

Dump the 4-2-3-1 and go for 3-5-2.Drop Maguire and McFred, replace them with Lindelof, Shaw at LCB, Telles at LWB and Matic-Donny in midfield. Be more willing to rotate Ronnie and Cavani as the latter is the better player for us and same with Bruno and Pogba but I don't see the sense of investing more playing time in Pogba as he wants out.

Whilst a 3 at the back formation looks more defensive ours will have more technical players as Lindelof, Shaw, Matic and DVDB are infinitely better on the ball that Maguire Fred and McTominay.

In as much as Ole has had some of his best results with McFred he has to realize that they are technically short of what's required at this level and consititute a clear and obvious weakness that opponents will target. They have already cost him his job so he has has to ditch them if he is to make the most of his undeserved second chance.

Ole does not have the capacity to be a top coach. We are desperately trying to make him into something that he isn't.

Title challenge. This season. If that seems impossible, well it seems that way to me too. But that was the aim this season as far as I’m concerned and nothing has changed. Once it’s become evident we’re not in that title race - I would argue it has already - then it’s too late. Keep him on and we’re rewarding failure.

His last chance was if he could pull a magnificent miracle runs by winning 6 matches in a row after that embarrassing defeat to Leicester but he couldn't do it and couldn't even last more than 1 match as I initially expected before the Liverpool match. His time is up. I can't think how he can turn this around and when I say turn it around means back to league title challenger which not gonna happen. This season is the season he must challenge the league, 400m is enough to turn your squad into title challenger. A manager who can't do that after 400m spent then he shouldn't be here anymore. Unless he is somehow winning 10 matches in a row from now but that's basically the same thing as what happened to last week and we know it won't happen.

It's too late to make changes at this point

- Even if he had to bring top coaches to replace dumb and dumber it would take these coaches weeks to get the squad up to speed
- Ole lied to the likes of Mata, Matic, Jesse and VDB about game time so he won't be trusted. The former three are quite popular figures in the dressing room.
- In a bid of self preservation the blame is being shifted on Ronaldo, Greenwood and Pogba. These 3 players are game changers which is exactly the players Ole rely so much upon

Its very hard for a manager to get away with a 5-0 defeat at home against the club's biggest rival especially if the manager in question is a bottler of the proportion of OGS. The guy is on buying time whether the club want it or not.

Beat Spurs, Atalanta, City, Watford, and then win/draw vs Villareal but beat Chelsea, Arsenal, and Crystal Palace. Can he do all of that without fail once in the next 8 matches? I think we all know the answer.

Win the next 2 and he should be given the season, otherwise he should be sacked.
Why someone's who for the last 3 years showed how clueless he is time and time again, future depend on 2 games? What if we win those games after being completely outplayed like against Villareal? He has shown he is out of his depth here many times already, giving him until the end of season is giving up on all trophies in October.

Ole has given the players a lot of freedom to express themselves and maybe it’s been on the expansion of discipline.

We need our midfield to be much more defensive disciplined and compact.
  1. We have to sacrifice the AM position and eventually play Bruno deeper.
  2. Our wings (RL/LW) have to realise they are offensive midfielders not only attackers; they have to increase their defensive work rate; take more defensive responsibility.
Bruno and our wings are very offensive by nature, so I’m not to concerned a more defensive set-up and approach will make us to defensive.

Our back four have done way to many severe individual mistakes. Have to be reduced a lot,
but it’s not much Ole can do to solve that problem.

What about:

—————Matic/Fred/McT
————-DVB—————Lingard
Sancho————————————Rashford

Win away at Atalanta and he has practically qualified from the group. Win today and he shows he can fight for top 4..
Is this post a joke or some rival fan taking the piss? Winning against Atalanta means jack shit. This group is borderline fodder. It should never have been even in question, yet we're in a dogfight, wondering whether we'd qualify or not... for a second year, btw. As far as fighting top 4, that too is borderline insanity. 500 million spent to fight for top 4. Wow. What next? He needs 10 billion to challenge for the title. (Note: not win it, because that will never happen, but challenge).

At this point asking what Ole has to do to turn it around is like basically saying he has to magically turn into a much better manager.

He has to morph into a world class coach overnight. You may as well ask what does Donny need to do to become a United legend.

Win the next 2 and he should be given the season, otherwise he should be sacked.
Yes agreed. The whole season should rest entirely on the next two matches. Beat the mighty Spurs and Atlanta and Solskjaer gets a free pass. So what if he loses 6-0 to City? He won the two games prior. There's nothing ridiculous about this at all.

I will be difficult to turn this around but I think he needs to stay true to himself and go back to the basics he stated when he first came in. Whether everyone agrees or not, don't go out just trying to appease. As Ole says "go all in".

Let no team run more or work harder. Drop anyone who doesn't pull their weight, even Ronnie.

Stick with his 4231 and keep his tactics simple, attack quickly and with purpose.

Attack! an unrelenting wave of attacks. Win the ball back and go again. Move the ball from back third to front third quickly and then show patience and composure in final third.

Stop losing the ball in dangerous positions with more players in front of the ball than behind it.

Ultimately he needs to win the next 3 games and somewhere along the way find a convincing team performance.

Erm, win games? You know, what managers are supposed to do with an obscenely high quality squad?

We are all as fickle as it gets.
If he smashed Spurs, Atalanta and City, we definitely won't be as stabby with the pitch forks.

Lose one and he's toast however.

I don't think he's capable of doing anything to convince me at this point. You can't win the title in the first ten games but you certainly can lose it. We're already out of the League Cup and on evidence we'll struggle to get out of the KO stage of the CL. He just needs to go at this point. He has a very good squad of players yet we look no better than the Moyes team which wasn't great.

I love Ole the man and Ole the player will spears have a place in my heart for giving me one of the greatest moments of my life but what he should do as he loves the club is resign as head coach/manager as Ole the coach is simply nowhere near good enough to be in charge of the club.

Said it for a couple of years that the move would have been to move Ole upstairs to Director Of Football as a thank you for his caretaker run and then get Pochettino in as head coach, maybe now Pochettino isn’t the best choice as I’d take Ten Hag over him but for me the theory is the still the same as Ole is great within the club and understands how it should work but unfortunately just isn’t good enough to coach the squad.

Seeing as he’s basically a dead man walking and I fully expect him to be gone by a week Tuesday (so after the City game) he might as well go out swinging and go all out attack. Go with a 4-3-3 and stick Fernandes and Pogba in the midfield, release whichever of Greenwood or Sancho or Rashford play from defensive shackles up top with Ronaldo and whoever plays the holding role in midfield instruct them to simply shield the back four.

The decision to select Maguire versus Leicester for me was nothing short of pathetic. He only started training the day before the match. Surely Ole and the coaches must have been working on a game plan all week that included Bailly as Maguire wasnt training. Or maybe there was no coaching and working on a game plan all week which is even worse. To select a player not even half fit, who was then at fault for some of the goals and then to leave him on says everything. Mates FC without any form of coaching going on
