What DOES he have to do?

Challenge for the PL title.

But what would that need? Tactics and boldness to kill darlings. Ronaldo? Maguire? Rebuild the midfield (with demand on a DM for january?) Challenge the boards dysfunctionality and lack of ambitions (wich would demand dropping some of the nosthalgia)? Maybe. Its all highly unlikely.

For the tactics he would probably need to add someone in the straff that could help him with it.

But I tink one of the main problems is the attitude. I think there is a missconception about what is ”needed” to deal with the pressure of beeing part of the club. It feeds from OGS to the players - these constant verbal responses on ”not good enough”, ”not acceptable” and ”it hurts us as professionals/players/fans” that comes again and again from Fernandes, Rashford and Maguire. A winner doesnt ”open his heart” to show his honesty, he change things that doesn’t work and make sure they do not happen again. You never hear Klopp, Guardiola, Fergie or Zlatan as self-excusing and submissive as the current ”United way”.

It feels hardly unlikely, but he needs to admit what doesnt work and his own limitations and make sure to find (and to the board demand) solutions. Not ”keeeping strong” or ”keeping the faith”.

It's too late because he's been exposed for what he always was - well below the level required to manage at the elite level in terms of his ability.

He has no obvious style or plan, other than to let the opposition (regardless of quality) have the ball and try to hit them on the break. The 4-2-3-1 is actually a 4-2-4, most of the time and whoever plays in midfield, we get passed around and overran. He's had enough time to work with most of that squad to implement a system yet still nobody seems to know what to do. The players don't run, probably because they don't know when to sit, or when to press and end up going in dribs and drabs and being exposed.

He's a nice man but completely out of his depth. He's only still in the job because individuals have won games with single bits of brilliance - mainly Fernandes and (more recently) Ronaldo.

It’s pretty clear for everyone to see what Ole should do...

Rest players that are out of form
Ensure the players always give maximum effort
Sign a defensive midfielder
Implement tactics
Get the squad playing as a team
Not rely on McFred

He should not be given the chance to turn anything around. He has had his multitude of chances. If we win any of the next 3 games it will be in spite of him. It will be the players playing for their own professional pride. He is not good enough to change anything and he has shown this consistently the past 3 years. Nine lives and all that seriously. Get sacked and go learn his trade for the next 10 years at some other sucker of a club.

Any other respectable football club would have never have signed him on in the first place.

I think it's impossible for him at this point because he took a pretty big legitimacy hit with the Pool loss.

(a) He has to get the squad on his side which maybe he can if he's as good a man manager as he claims, but I don't think it'll happen.

(b) Fire McKenna / Carrick and get someone to do the pressing coaching. Unclear if the squad will ever buy into it again given what happened with Pool. Even if they do, it takes a full season to set it up and he doesn't have that luxury. I also don't believe he will fire either one.

He will play his standard counter attacking stuff and we'll do alright but won't win anything and finish 4th.

There was a thread on here in the summer asking what fans expected this season and almost everyone said to be in the title race so the absolute minimum he has to do is make up around 6-8 points on Chelsea, City, Liverpool very quickly. Forget winning a trophy, if we're not genuinely in the race (not forever 10 points adrift thinking maybe) then he's failed.

So many threads about a new formation, a new tactical emphasis, why we are bad, what we should do etc...

What would Ole have to do at this point to redeem himself? Win next several games? Just show better attacking play and shore up the defense? Long CL run?

Have you completely washed your hands of Ole or is there anything he can do that would make you feel different in regards to him keeping his position?

For me, I would prefer a change but to redeem himself, there are 14 games left this calendar year (11 PL and 3 CL), I would need to see 9 wins out of 11 in the PL and qualifying from CL to even consider by January still not being an "Ole out"

What, if anything would have to happen for him to convince you?
This.

Nothing.

Because I don't live in Wonderland.

It is too late for him to change anything, he doesn't have coaching staff capable of drastic change, and he has shown inability to do so even if he had time for the change.

If he was capable of quick tactical change, it would have happened in Liverpool game. Ole will just keep grinding the same crap over and over again, hoping for moments of brilliance, "more effort", "more concentration", or some other magic to save him. But he is spiraling hard already and his luck has run out, so writing is on the wall - he won't survive until January. It's done

Realistically, he needs to fecking stop licking Keiran and Carrick's asses, fire them and hire proper coaching staff. He might also learn a thing or two.

Ideally, he needs to move on. I said many times I don't like him, dunno, he seems like a cringe and fake dude, trying to be some SAF or god knows who. I wouldn't say this if he would've won a few titles and an UCL here and there before joining us, but he has this deep fake persona trying to speak like SAF when he achieved jack shit in the game, it's so annoying.

I know I'm judging a guy I'm seeing on TV, but I really don't know, there's something that really makes him unpleasant to me, dunno, maybe him just being a shit manager.

Leave is my preference. Sacked is a close second.

Yeah after the window we had there weren't any excuses, he had to be in the title race and at the very least get to the quarterfinals in Europe with the piss easy group we have. Instead we look more like a battle for fecking 4th and have had to pull miracles to be at the top of our group in the UCL

Aside from the tactical limitations he has, I honestly don't think he has the personality for the job. This is something you are born with and can not be learnt. One of the problems with Ole is that he is in love with the club. Or at least the Disney-like romanticism and ideals that are often trotted out by fans, ex players and the media. He constantly refers proudly to his staff as 'Man United people'. This type of thinking may have been a breath of fresh air when he first got the job. The quelling of a Mourinho storm. Now though, it just comes across as misplaced smuggery and prevents him from thinking rationally. Essentially his footballing philosophy is shaped upon something intangible. Legend, rather than specific tactical planning that could help serve the team on the pitch.

If, for arguments sake, Ole could somehow turn it around, he would need to bring in someone from the outside. His very own Carlos Queiroz. Someone who could at the very least, put some sort of structure in place. Go back to basics. Keep a clean sheet or two. From there you would hope that a bit of confidence will be restored and fresh ideas explored. The greatest challenge was always to move away from the counter attack to a more progressive and dominant system. Other managers look far more comfortable in setting up their teams in this way. I'm not even referring to the top sides.

Essentially, I would at least like to see Ole show some outside the box thinking. Don't be burdened by our past, but enthused by our future.

We've been in this same place too many times before to keep doing the same thing over and over. Apart from hurting Ole's feelings -- and I have no doubt that every United supporter likes Ole -- there's no point in persisting with failure.

If you genuinely think about United, and what aspects of football we are good at. You will realise that we suck in every department, even the basics. What does he have to do? Learn how to coach and become good at it, for starters.

It has reached a point whereby I feel sick just by looking at his face.

Smiling/Clapping at draws/losses.

Titles can be the only answer.

"Challenging", "Progress", "Hope" is not enough anymore, as it will only prolong the suffering.

The definition of insanity:
Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Against Atalanta we were up against a team that created chance after chance, but they didn't have the calibre of players to finish us off.
Against Liverpool we selected the same side, and again they created chance after chance; and they did have the calibre of players to finish us off.

Utter madness from Ole.

I think it would help his United legacy a great deal if he graciously resigned but I fear his ego is too big for that

I don’t know what he has to do in the future with regards to changing the results and quality of football and I’m not sure he can do it but right now all he has to do is hold his head up with dignity and pride and keep going till the board says otherwise.

I watched his press conference today and I think he does that, he loves this club and yeah that’s not enough to make you a good manager but some of the horrible shit written on here about him is bang out of order.

I for one hope he proves me wrong, it’ll take a lot of proving but I really hope he does.

Do you think he has the tactical nous and coaching staff to do this?

I don't know. These are all opponents we've beaten in the past. If he can fix the ongoing problems with the team is a question we'll only know in time.

But my short answer to OP is that the team needs to hit form immediately

Win all games until we meet Liverpool away in March. Then batter them 5-0 and I might forgive him.

So many threads on the same thing! Isn't it obvious? He'll never be good enough. End of. Like someone said, there's nothing I can do to win a Formula 1 race if you put me in the car, though I can of course drive. You need a proper driver.

Haven't felt this glum about united since the final days of moyes.

Really gutted it hasn't worked but it hasn't. Our squad is excellent but ole has taken us as far as he can and its nowhere close to what's required.

He's got to go.

Resign. He's not good enough, and this isn't a club for him to learn. It should be unacceptable for us to waste another year with a pretty good squad.

Dont care about whole Ole in or out nonsense but i find comments like win X amount of games kinda funny. As long you scratch your head while watching us trying to play this game called football, as long you wondering what the feck we are doing on a training pitch each match, there is no amount of wins that can paper those cracks just like its happening now, at the end of day, piss poor performances, having no idea what you doing on the pitch, being completely clueless how to play football, not to mention, you leaking goals from set piece for last few years, leaking goals overall with no clean sheet on sight, still not able to break teams in final 3rd because everything is in Jesus take the wheel mode, all that shit will catch up to you regardless of previous results.

Problem is, fans either dont watch games but when you get a result with shit performance, they will say, its good to win like that, 3pts are 3pts, move on but when you pay the price at some point, they would say it tend to happen sometimes, bad day at office and similar bullshit, completely forgetting shit served in previous weeks.

Get a 0-8 hiding from Man City and then maybe that will push the button for the board to finally sack him.

Or perhaps be a bit of a manager worthy of being at United.

i think he’s already beside the likes of moyes, giggs, van gaal, atkinson, sexton, docherty, o’farrell in the pantheon of utd managers.

The only way he could convince me would be to win the BPL or UCL this season which is just don't believe he is capable of.

Everything about Ole fills me with dread now. Tactically he isn't up to it, he doesn't know how to use a squad, he can't articulate well to the fans in interviews and ultimately he can't compete with the elite and even mid tier managers in the league.

His time to convince people was at the start of the season. He is done with chances and shouldn't be offered more.

100% this. And it could be seen coming in the Villa and Leicester game.

The wheels have been coming off for ages and he's had a lot of luck with teams not being good enough to take chances and/or being bailed out by individuals time and again.

He has no idea how to set up a side. He has top class players in most positions and is getting out-coached and out thought by managers who shouldn't be on his level given the club he's at. The players look like they have no idea what to do and for me, rather than lack of effort from the players (which I think is an easy cop out) it highlights the lack of a system of proper coaching in when to press and when not to.

yep, or had a hipster name and less of a manchester accent.

Doesn’t really work, this.

He’s only in the job because of his name (that he made as a player at United) and his Manchester accent.

We wouldn’t have hired a random Spanish manager with his managerial credentials and no association to the club.

The bias works for him, rather than against him in this case. But there is probably still a bit more at the bottom of the barrel that people who want to put our failings anywhere else (fans, board, Pogba, the lunar calendar…) but on Ole can scrape.
