What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

Amazes me that at the moment we look like going on a pre-season tour and we have so far only signed one player in one of the positions that was least urgent in terms of upgrading.

We also still havent sold a single player, only ones to leave are contracts ending and Henderson loaned.

Now people have stopped mentioning German players Ragnick was l9nke dwith, its all Dutch players and we seem to have all our eggs now in current or ex Ajax players.

And our bet player last season, the only actual player who is a proper centre forward wants to leave, our best young player may well not ever play for the club again.

Its a complete and utter shambles, just look at that tour squad, only Ronaldo is missing and there are some good young players, but it is so weak.

We still need to get rid of some dross yet I only expect Pereira and Tuanzabe to be sold, others will be loaned I reckon so another summer of them still here effectively.

What do we still need incoming a back up keeper, cb, rb, 2 x cm, rw , 2 x cf....still 7 players.

Not dissapointed by any of the players leaving so far, but its a little strange how excited people are with the possibility of Erkisen to me. A good player, but isnt he just Mata with a more expansive range of passing....how does that improve our side? FDJ doesnt want to come it appears even though he may be forced to, great player but thats 1/4 to 1/3 of our budget on one signing that isnt a happy one....that I still dont think happens, he goes elsewhere at the 11th hour.

Most of the players I was keen on have either moved already or signed new contracts.....

Vandervoordt moves to Leipzig in a couple of years, we could have done a similar deal or even signed him now and sold Henderson and made a profit.

Kamara has moved to Villa for FREE

Bissouma has moved for £35m

Caqueret has signed a new contract with Lyon, tentative links with Milan but nobody seemed to moe for him, sur ewe could have got him under £30m

Enzo Fernandez has moved for under £20m

Nkunku has signed a new contract

Timber doesnt want to move

I still think we could have made four quality signings from those players for £30m to £65m....add that to Malacia for £13m thats 5 of 8 signings with well over £100m left to spend maybe nearer £150m

Yet now we are linked heavily with Lisandro Martinez £40m, De JOng £50m, Antony £70m thats £160m on three players potentially and still no striker or right back or defensive midfielder unless Martinez moves there which means no centre back.

Its not looking good at all. The only players I am still really keen on we are not even linked with

Gusto RB Lyon £20-25m
Gvardiol CB Leipzig £60m
Giouri CF Nice £45m
Ekitike CF Reims (tbh less interested in him now seeing prices Newcastle seem to have to pay)

There just seems no combnation of players we are linked with or the ones I would like that really moves us forward as much as hoped this summer. I dont think now we get five which is the minumum under £190m odd which seems to be the budget unless we make some bargains and the only obvious one is Eriksen who is a good player, but never been as enthused about him as many on here even during his SPurs days.

We either require miracles from Ten Hag improving some of our players and I think people are expecting too much on that side or/and we need 2/3 youngsters to really shine this season and only one maybe two tops are ready from the talented ones we do have.

I have to say short term at least unless something dramatic happens in the next few weeks, I cant remember being less enthused about our side going into a new season in many years

Very good post and dishing out of much needed dose of reality about the state of this window

exactly, this should be our targets, still surprises me how we haven't signed any of them.
I rather sign gvardiol over Martinez !!!

Ok... I am bored. Here goes... :)

So Malacia is over the line. Eriksen is a medical away. FDJ is interesting but I am confident Barca must cave. I expect we will get Martinez. I expect we will get a RW. For the sake of argument I will say it is Antony. I am not sure where to go with Ronaldo but we will assume he is off.

Thing is we have so much good youth we almost have to give ETH a year to sort the wheat from the chaff. We also have to give him awhile to sort the quality of Fred and McTominay. We will also give Martial one last chance to revive his career.

So how will we line up. I think a lot is pretty obvious except for one tweak. I would not be surprised if DVB lines up as our DCM. I just get a sense DVB understands what ETH wants and I believe he has the quality to be able top play at this level. Time will tell.

-------------------------------DeGea----------------------------
Dalot----------Varane-----------Martinez------Shaw
---------------------FDJ---------------DVB--------------------
Antony------------------Bruno-------------------Sancho
----------------------------Martial------------------------------

This leaves Eriksen, Fred, and McTominay as subs for midfield plus Garner if he shows enough. For attack, we have Rashford plus loads of potential we need to sort such as Amad, Pellistri, Hannibal, Elanga, Shoretire, and Garnacho. Truth be said I am ok if Ronaldo leaves so we can sort some of the potential. On defense we need to clear out some CBs and we know we will need an upgrade at RFB.

This year for me is just about righting the ship. I just want a team pulls on the shirt and comes out and fights for the badge. Top four is my goal. Then with the ship set on the correct course, we can add a RFB plus any and all other positions we need to reinforce. I honestly do not think we will need to many after this year. Again I completely support ETH and think we will be ok but will take two summer transfer windows until we have a squad we know is strong across all XI positions.

My two cents... :smirk:

Well done, but I don't think that De Jong is coming here, and Malacia is not here to sit on the bench. We still will need a DM (Sangare would be my choice) a CF (Schick maybe). But I do think that the Youngsters we have coming through will get game time this season.

Well, no worries about disagreeing about FDJ coming or not. Time will sort that and I have no crystal ball.

As for a CF. I almost think we should not buy one as I do not expect we can afford a world class striker this year. Sort the youngster and maybe next year we get a RCB and a CF.

As for the DCM, between, DVB, Fred, McTominay, Garner and Martinez (assuming we get him). I think we have plenty of options that need sorting first.

My biggest take away from this United team is we need quite a few new players, I do not believe we will get all we need this window, *AND* we have tons of youth and squad stuff that needs to be sorted.

Again just my 2 cents... :smirk:

I think you are probably providiing a realistic best case scenario to be fair. Worries me as

a) I dont think we secure all those players

b) Does our squad need improving?

Even with all the outgoings, not sure that is the case when we have a five a side team of starting eleven players.

I know over the period especially since Mouringho left thhere ahs been a lot of talk about the poor coaching here, but the faith in Ten Hag to turn around some of these players I think is overly optimistic, and possibly because of him having worked with Dutch players and doign so ago....doesnt mean they translate to our league or club.

That starting eleven has two players, who have pretty much failed under four managers already, who were good coaches too on the whole. It has Dalot as our right back, who for me is actually our worst defender bar the youngsters...I just dont see anything in him and am bemused people are mentioning him and the manager seems to liek him according to the press. Loved to be proved wrong, but he is a liability in my eyes. The DVB...yes did well at Ajax, over rated still in my opinion, never wanted him, he barely got a game, was non existant when he did and was henerally poor at Everton, yet Ten Hag will turn him round into a great pivot player in the premiership.....Also dare I say it, Fernandes is a really interesting one, even in his early months where he was so decisive......he was also really wasteful then, people just didnt notice it as he was winning games......I think he may fall out of favour with Ten Hag pretty quickly.

Not even going into other players, looking at how SPurs and Arsenal have already strengthened....our best case scenario lookign at things realsitically with what seems to be happening......still too many holes for me to be at all confident of a top four finish....it would still be a real struggle I feel.

We had a poor first eleven last season and lost several players, yet we astill have a large squad....yet only three signings are starters (maybe that changes over the season) bu tno right back, no second cm and no cf.....its last summer all over again, some quality signings yet massive holes still

Agree about Dalot. I just see so many other holes to fill.

As for DVB. We have to remember Real wanted this kid. I think he will be revived under ETH. I might be wrong but it is my hope.

As for other teams, yes they have moved quickly and surely to fill their rosters. We still have time just need to do the business.

I would do another 5 signings -

- 2 players who are on the last year of their contracts so expect them to live - Ruiz (€50m) and Koulibaly (€30m);
- Either of Icardi (loan) or free transfer (Belotti)
- Antony (€60m)
- Sangare (€30m)

Total outlay of €170m and raise €50m from outgoings for net spend of €120m.

Sell Ronaldo (€15m), Telles and Williams (€25m), one of Bailly or Tuanzebe (€10m).

All the youth go on loans and develop in peace - Elanga, Amad, Pellistri, Garner, Mejbri

Team - DDG, AWB (Dalot), Varane (Lindelof), Koulibaly (Maguire), Shaw (Malacia), Sangare (McT), Ruiz (Fred), Bruno (DVB), Sancho (Rashford), Eriksen (Antony) and Belotti (Martial)

Ajax is getting annoying. Just move on to Gonaclo Inacio of Sporting and Noni Madueke of PSV instead of overpaying for Martinez and Antony.

I just wish every transfer, whether in or out, didn’t end up having to be a saga. Whether it’s FdJ, CR7, Malacia (announcing himself) etc.

Whether this club still has buying power or “top club” mentalities, the tumescent frustration of each signing robs the fans and club image of a much needed sheen.

I get that it’s tough to make a transfer happen, and the reality of a surprise signing doesn’t really happen anymore, but every time we make a signing, it’s almost with an air of relief, not excitement.

Anyway, rant over, muppet cap back on again, and getting ready to F5 the heck out of today!!

Here’s the problem with this, ETH has very set ideas, First he likes a high line and opposite complete full backs who become inverted when we have the ball however one will stretch the team the other way so the formation out of possession is 4-2-1-3 however in position. He has multiple patterns of play, ranging from 1-2-3-4, 3-2-2-3, 2-3-3-2 and this is why players like Belotti and Koulibaly are less suited than Martial and L Martinez or H Maguire. Koulibally Is just a better version of Bailey who might not go anywhere because as he showed today he is very similar to Julian Timber and ETH likes that type of player. If we can’t get another RB don’t be surprised E Baily or V Lindelof playing there in some games this season.

He likes defenders who can pass the ball forward quickly and very quick strikers, he likes multiple patterns of play and movement through the lines, In Short he’s a
Proper coach, probably the first we’ve had since LVG but much more progressive in his attacking ideas. Even Defenders will be encouraged to get forward and help the team with goals and assists. I agree on Antony whose perfect but I just can’t see AWB and Mctominay making his team on regular basis. He will want a new RB to compete with Dalot, and at least two more midfield players to play his way. I think we only get L Martinez, FDJ, C Eriksen and maybe Dyballa or Antony if we can sell a player who has real value like McTominay.

Yeah could see one of them two signing late on

We need signings in midfield and attack, we need very little in defence after L Martinez and I would keep E Baily not because he was outstanding yesterday but because his sale value is far greater than 7.5-10m being tossed around get him back in the squad as a utility player, CB, RB and CDM where he would always be useful when your 2-1 up with 10/15 minutes to close the game out. He’s happy being a squad player, should play much more and I think it’s clear ETH has told them all it’s a clean slate. From a greedy point of view o like the idea of Bailey, Lindelof, Varane, Maguire and L Martinez. One will always be injured, Bailey, Lindelof and Martinez can all play in 2 or 3 positions. I really think both Lindelof and Baily are better right back options than AWB who looks shot of confidence.

So we have Malacia, Eriksen and Martinez done.

De Jong looks likely as well. Is that enough?

The weak areas would be forward, midfield and right back. If we only sign those 4 I'd give the window a 6.8/10

One more decent signing and a couple sales would make it a good window.

I would be pretty confident we'll also add an attacker of some sort, be it a CF or a RW.

who can United sell ? Are there any willing buyers for them ?

We need to move on some players now. Bailley has done well against a pre season liverpool and an Aussie team, but would look to move him, Jones and Tuanzebe on. Bailley and Tuanzebe should get a minimum of 25 mill. Jones a free transfer. Wan Bissaka 20 mill minimum. Lindelof can cover RB as I think Dalot is the preferred option, unless we buy.
Thats 45 mill minimum to get an upgrade for either RB/CM even if FDJ comes or not.

Bailly, Jones, Telles, Tuanzabe, Williams and Chong should certainly all be moved on......

Im still not convinced at all DeJong comes, never really have been.

Two young players I think we should be interested in are Levi Colwill and Carney Chukwuemeka. They look like two of the most talented young English players and that is something maybe now needs adding to our squad.

I was quite excited about Mengi, but not so much now, our onl yEnglish centre back is Maguire and still think once we move on a season or so past the essential signings both him, Lindelof and maybe even with injuries and age Varane are at risk....in reality certainloy the first two should be already.

Adding Colwill to Martinez already builds to the future.

Chukwuemeka so far when I have watched him doesnt seem to have got involved in matches, but the talent is there to be seen. We do have Hannibal of course and Iqbal is making waves in preseason but still no gurantees on either. Again with our current options moving forward a season or two may be the end of McFred and I still feel VDB wont make it here. For £20m again we are preparing well for the future as surely one of those three can make it.

I still think its important we sin a right back, however I dont think we will. Concerned about the faith in Dalot and for that reason I hope Bissaka actualyl stays for now as I still think Dalot flops and having Bissaka and Laird waiting could be valuable....dont buy into the Lindelof at right back under Ten Hag type comments at all.

A striker is needed if Ronaldo goes for sure, if he stays I think we may as well stick with him and Martial for now.

What I do think is still vital this window is a ball winning energetic midfielder that is defensively sound. Pretty much all the midfield optios i was keen on cant happen now as they have alreayd moved or signed new contracts at there clubs. Not seen anything of Sangare to comment but three worries for me:

a) ROnaldo goes and we dotn sign a striker
b) Failure to sign a right back....which is going to happen
c) Failure to sign a defensive midfielder.....unforgivable to do so yet another summer in my opinion and all this nonsense of Ten Hag and his systems and the press. Every top side has one in the starting eleven with options on the bench....we dont have a single option at the moment, has to be addressed

I think we've made good additions but prioritised the wrong positions. I think it will be a huge error to go into the new season with our addressing the needs at right back, striker, and a second cm (should de jong join).

Think the lack of quality options along with inability to sell AWB & Ronaldo are the reason for not signing a RB or ST.

Anyone knows a RB in Lyon called Malo Gusto ? How is he ? will he fit us ?

19, pretty cheap and has a contract til 2024

He's great. Statsbomb, the sports data company, recently did a request line where they were asked to identify the closest player to Hakimi among U27 players and they came up with Gusto. Still think he's probably better to develop with Lyon for at least another year but he's definitely someone I would love to join at some stage.

Would certainly agree with the first two, however never felt we were ever after another starter CM once Eriksen signed

The point is we should be.

I'm not sure what our plans for Eriksen are really, it seems like he's just an upgrade on VDB as Bruno's back up (making VDB kind of obsolete). Or maybe ETH plans for him to deputise for De Jong when he doesn't play. It still doesn't address we don't really have a partner for De Jong as both Fred and Mctominay just aren't good enough technically or defensively.

I see people dreaming of a De Jong-Bruno-Eriksen midfield trio and I think they're in dreamland, it seems incredibly unbalanced.

Completely agree with you, there will be definitely be games where not having a quality midfield partnership hurts us badly

Think we could get away without signing a RB if Dalot's form continues. We desperately need to get De Jong and a new attacker in ASAP though.

If Frenkie is coming and i guess that ETH will not insist on right back then Antony and backup striker (Toney?) if diva no7 is leaving would be perfect window.

You mean dalots form in pre season? Anyone can look good in pre season but probably agree depth in wide froward is priority

Think we'll only be looking at FDJ, a ST/RW and maybe a backup GK depending on EtH's thoughts about veteran third choice keepers.

If I was in charge of transfers :
Malo gusto
Josko gvardiol
Frankie de jong
Benjamin sesko
Tyrell malacia
Eriksen
Would have been my signings, then get rice and Antony next season

We still need so much. Our squad has too many players that shouldn't even be here.

The RB, CM, RW/LW, GK and striker position have very poor back ups. In some of the positions the strikers aren't even good enough.

Ten Hag needs two more signings at the very least and that's with Ronaldo staying.

We can't let EtH go into the season with that midfield and forward options. One or two injuries in these departments and we are fecked. Threw out cash left and right for the wrong positions so far.
