What do we still need? Aka The never ending story

Cant see all the deals happening, but the strongest links for a fair while seem to be to Timber, DeJOng and Nunez.

If we have a £200m or so budget and were to sign all three, thats sure £160/170m spent.

That would have to be all bar £35m of a budget I would think being generous maybe even and still no reliable right back, only a championship loaned defensive midfielder and either Sancho switched where he hasnt performed, Elanga or a host of youngsters as right wing options.

What would people do with the last £35m considering those problems if our three possible main targets come?

I have seen a fair few people content with Dalot as a starter and content with one of McFred alongside DeJong but not many happy with the right wing options.

Personally, wouldnt say happy but I feel the opposite. I feel we would have to give a season to the right wing options of even possibility of ROnaldo playing there at times, but another midfielder and a right back would be a priority and £35m doesnt get much at all.

Still feel especially free, Kamara was someone we should have been interested, Enzo Fernandez know little of bar youtube, but there is obvious talent (though isnt he maybe a DeJOng alternative rather than a defensive midfielder?), but that release clause certainyk makes him viable.

I knwo there is talk unresolveed accusations hanging over him but Bissouma seems liek he should be a target to me.

There are still cheaper alternatives though I feel Kone was maybe a Ragnick target and that may be dead. I watch French football but havent seen Lens but surprising to only see Palace linked with Doucoure there as he appears to have had a big season.......either way,w e definately needs another midfield reinforcement and that leaves next to nothing for a right back, I really fear we are not going to sign one at all which would be a big mistake

I just don't see how it makes sense to spend so much (say 65M of our 200M) on Nunez in terms of next season, when we have a striker who will score goals, and have massive holes everywhere else but the spots Sancho, Bruno and probably Varane and De Gea play. It might make sense to get a hungry, powerful, fast striker in for 65M, but that should be possible next summer unless we think the market is going to get worse (I have no idea on this one, but it certainly has been for strikers). I'd rather we take a punt on a young 9 who can be the backup this year and then either start or be backup again next year when we make a big signing, and bring in 2 deep midfielders, a RB and an LCB.

Agree, can't see us making that kind of move with so many holes to fill. Could see Lukaku coming back, with Sturridge back-filling until we can get some real quality in. Would look to see what we go for in midfield/CB (probably Milner, Duffy, something like that) and then take a swing at Haaland next year.

I hate how Fred gets lumped in here when he's actually a good player and far from being a problem for us. Starter for Brazil too who have much better midfielders than we do. He's very different to McTominay... And he shows it regularly too.

It's not about lumping them together, I'm saying neither are good enough to be starting for us because they aren't, he starts for Brazil because Casemiro plays in Fabinho's role so he's the #8, and international football isn't nessicarily a barometer of quality when you look at some international regulars over the years for various big nations.

It also seems possible to me that Ten Hag has suggested some cheaper midfielders like the ones above and the club is scrambling to scout them, or that he's taking time to sort through the club's targets.

Yeah, I think it's a case of prioritizing as there's so much to do, the second, cheaper and easier to sign midfielder will be focused on after De Jong, Timger and a foward are sorted out one way or another.

Do you reckon we will still be in another one IF we can pull off this dream midfield signing

I don’t think this is realistic given the amount of deals we would have to negotiate but this would be my ideal summer if we had a 200m budget (including sales)

Incomings
De Jong, 65m
Perfect player for Ten Hag, press resistant and excellent at progressing the ball through passes and carries. If we’re not able to convince him to join I think that targeting Kone would be a suitable alternative.

David, 40m
Fits into the mould of a versatile forward that can play with and without Ronaldo in the line up.
He offers high pressing and excellent ball retention whilst also providing smart off the ball runs. Reports that Ten Hag has been following him since his time at Genk so will be familiar with his qualities.

Timber, 35m
Another player that fits perfectly into Ten Hag’s system, Timber offers great ball progression, reading of the game and leadership. Ideal for an inverted full back role. Rumours are that he may want to stay at Ajax so targeting Mukiele as an alternative would be a good choice.

Kante, 25m
Was unsure of this one given the injury problems Kante has had of late and the eerie reminders of our deal for Matic. However, I believe that Kante would be a great addition given his experience, lack of available young choices and his fit next to De Jong in the midfield. 25m with one year left on his contract would be a reasonable fee given the impact it would have on the team and has reported attracted Ten Hag’s interest. Ideally would love Maxence Caqueret but he has recently renewed his contract with Lyon so could be a target for next summer instead.

Ndicka, 15m
Recent Europa league winner, Ndicka would be a fantastic option for Ten Hag’s reported desire for a left footed centre back option. Could be a smart signing given Bailly and Tuanzebe rumoured to leave and the injury issues with Varane. He provides excellent recovery pace and aggression whilst also being a great ball carrier from defence. Has one year left on his contract and would be a steal for 15m.

Wijndal, 8.5m
The AZ Alkmaar captain has been reported as having a release clause of just 8.5m. He is a player that Ten Hag has observed and shown interest in whilst at Ajax. He’s had a excellent season providing 12 assists from the left back position. He would be a significant improvement on Telles and would instantly compete for a starting position. Rumours of interest from other clubs mean we could pursue Tyrell Malacia who has a slightly different profile but would provide improved quality.

Maximiano, 8m
Portuguese keeper aged just 22, recently impressed in his debut season in la liga, despite Granada’s relegation. His statistics are highly impressive with metrics showing that he has ranked highly in both save percentage and sweeper keeper duties such as actions outside the box. He may not start over De Gea straight away but could provide an excellent alternative if De Gea fails to fit into Ten Hag’s system. It is rumoured that Granada would accept a fee of 8m given their relegation.

Eriksen, free
Another one I was unsure of given his age and the direction of club needing to lean towards signing and developing younger players. However, I believe that Eriksen could replace Lingard and Mata’s minutes whilst providing a lot more quality. He proved for Brentford that he has a lot of quality at a premier league standard but wouldn’t be able to play every game of course. He could provide good cover for Bruno Fernandes and on a free transfer would have a minimal effect on the transfer budget.

Bissouma for obvious reasons.. no

i could see a midfield of FDJ - Fred - VDB working well

Bruno perhaps a hybrid 10/RWF

Ronaldo/Nunez, perhaps with Ronaldo as the LWF

I think people forget VDB is coming back under ETH and will probably play because he understands the system better than anyone

So you think we can solve the non-striker holes with the budget left over after buying Nunez?

And of our 55-60 games or so next year, Cristiano can't play 40? Or you want to spend 1/3rd of the budget on someone to play 20 games? And what, McTominay and Dalot first choice? Tarkowski on a free to play LCB?

Can understand the Bissouma sentiment but Greenwood is hardly the first player with allegations against him, our player of the season has had them and several other before have hardly covered themselves well as human beings off of the field.

I get the sentiments on VDB, he should certainly improve and get more opportunities under Ten Hag, but this is the premiership, not the Dutch league.

Each to there own, but a midfield three with nobody that can tackle or is intelligent defensively is a recipie for disaster for me, especially with a striker who isnt good at holdign the ball up from what I have seen so could lose possesion regularly with a 38 year old on the left and a wasteful Fenandes on the right who has not looked too impressiive there. Looks a good side in possesion maybe, without it, a disaster waiting to happen in my head anyway

Not too worried about a natural tackler not being in there as long as the 3 put the work in and cover the spaces when defending. Kinda how it worked at Ajax.

I’m in 2 minds about Bruno. What version will turn up. Looking forward to seeing what some of the young ones will do on the RW

Isn't this Calvin Ramsey highly rated? Surprised we didn't go for him and Liverpool did given what they have at RB and what we do.

Who plays right wing?

Bruno narrow on one side, Sancho wide on the other and VDB as the 10 behind Cristiano. Width on the Bruno side would have to come from whoever is our best fullback going forward. Not a pacy front 4, but the plan is to have the ball anyways and press high I assume with Ten Hag coming in.

Fair enough. Bruno's main problem is receiving the ball with his back to goal though and I could see him getting dispossessed a lot by full backs.

For that reason and others (Amad being too young and unproven, Elanga looking a bit limited on the ball in general, Sancho and Rashford preferring the left side) I think we need a right winger more than a defender.

My new updating on what United still need:

Reason why i didnt mentioned Frenkie De Jong before. Was because i thought Barca will not sell him and i thought he was unrealistic.
But lately. I can think its chance United can get him. Special a factor after United appoint Ten Hag. Then i have to update based on this factor too. Changing mine suggests.

I believe on the top service not only to the CF and attacking 3 upfront. A build up of attack start much deeper. Maybe from deep cm area or from RCM and LCM players like De Bruyne role at City. Iniesta for ealier edition for Barca. A good end and finish depend on a good start build up attack:

So with Pobga leaving and United shall get in a player at same or better level than Pobga. Then i think Frenkie De Jong is a MUST get/buy for United. On the way back to the top:

+ Frenkie De Jong for Pobga - LCM and RCM
+ Nunez for Cavani - CF
+ Eriksen for Mata - RCM/DCM/CM - Against team who lay really deep and give United commando to dictate. Then Eriksen can play as the deep laying balance DCM
+ Garner or a new DCM for Matic - DCM
+ Raphinha for Lingard - RW

How to set them up. First with a 433 with wingers

Raphinha - Eriksen/Bruno/DVB - Garner/Fred/Eriksen/De Jon - De Jong/Bruno/Eriksen/DVB - Sancho/Rashford + Ronaldo/Nunez

And if Raphinh or no RW is coming and signing. Then i can see Ten Hag go for 4312 with 2 CFs upfront and a free CAM in a diamond like this. Alternative to 433

Eriksen/DVB - Garner/Fred/Eriksen/De Jong - De Jong/Eriksen/DVB + Bruno/Eriksen/Sancho + Nunez - Ronaldo/Rashford

There are my new updating of what United still need.

De Jong is a must. A must of De Jong qualities and abilities. IF United can get another top creative and offensive CM like De jong or better. That players will fix and solve United cm problems too.
In others words. Different them than De Jong. But with same abilities and qualities. It will fix the same problem of the car too.

The abilities and qualities are more important than the names ;)

You good with De Jong is he can play as DCM. If Fred and Garner are not up to top level in that role.

Next season 22/23:

Eriksen/DVB/Bruno - Fred/Garner/De Jong - Bruno/De Jong/DVB

I think with De Jong, Fred and Garner as DCM. Are good enough for top 4 and champion league football.

If not. Then next summer transfer 2023. Declan Rice has one year left in his contract to 2024. And his transfer fee will get lower. Then United can go for Rice in that role. Balance deep laying cm player. Both to dictate from that area and to shield the back 4 and defend. Then you move up De Jong up in a more offensive cm player role which is LCM role, the Iniesta role for earilier Barca.

Season 23/24:

Bruno - Rice/Garner/Fred - De Jong

A 3 men cm midfield of Bruno - Rice - De Jong is really strong both defensive and offensive. Bruno and Jong more offensive and attacking role. Like Rice doing a job like Rodri for City. This capable of 3-5 goals a season.

First get De Jong this summer. To both solve DCM and the offensive creative cm role. To get top 4 and highest as possible. Then season 23/34 get Rice to free De Jong more to offensive attacking role. Because De Jong has like De Bruyne attacking and creative skills that is really needed up in the attack. Not only lay and hold it back a bit as a DCM player.

No he doesn't. West Ham have a 1 year option on him.

FDJ, Antony, timber, Eriksen and a quality DM would be a good first summer.

next summer needs to be a world class striker as Ronaldo will be leaving.

Signing FDJ and Eriksen would be great, but no DM for another year would be absolute insanity. We've need a quality holding midfielder for ages, and it's been the most obvious deficiency in the team.

If the De Jong and Eriksen deals both happen we'll finally be able to gain some composure and control in midfield so I'd say a smart start from Ten Hag. Personally from here I'd ignore Antony and get a proper ball winning midfielder to play next to De Jong, but knowing us we'll lumber De Jong with one of Fred or McTominay and splash €60M on Antony. Then hopefully a CB and RB can be squeezed out of the budget with a few sales.

CB - Martinez/Torres/De Ligt
RB - Mukiele/Dumfries

I think the following is realistic:

GK: DDG, Heaton

LB: Shaw, Malacia
RB: New signing, (the best out of AWB, Dalot, Laird, Williams)

CB: Varane, Maguire, Lindelof, McTominay

DLP: FDJ, Garner
DM: Martinez, Fred
AM: Bruno, Eriksen

LW: Sancho, Rashford
RW: Antony, Elanga

CF/False 9: Ronaldo, Martial/VdB

We could could do with one more top target at RB. But if all of this comes off, I think we'd have a very good first XI. The second XI isn't great, but that's what future transfer windows will be about. There's enough in the squad to make do for another season.

Would say at the start of this window we needed to sign 5 players for the first XI

RB
LCB
DM
CM
RW

If everything go as expected then we have addressed LCB (Martinez) CM (De Jong) and maybe RW (Antony) however still leaves us with the other 2 issues as well. I just worry about the lack of links to any players in these positions.

If we convert on all the names we are apparently in negotiations with (Martinez, Frenkie and Malacia), we'd still be another CM, RB, RW and CF away from being good enough to really challenge the top teams in the league. Provided they are all hits of course.

£191m Euromillions Jackpot tonight.

If I win, I'm gonna keep £1m and then give £190m to Richard Arnold and tell him to stop pissing about and buy some fecking players!

That’s really good of you as we need a bloody miracle right now - but be careful as we’ll likely piss it away as we don’t seem to have any targets from our ‘scouts’

Still not addressed any of RB, LCB, DM, CM, RW and ST before the tour. To say this is becoming unbelievable tiring would be an understatement.

We need absolute minimum of 3 which for me would be RB/RW, CM & ST, that leaves LCB, either RB/RW & DM for next windows.

End of the window signings should only ever be squad depth, NOT key first XI ones who need time to bed into team.

We are going into a new season with full stadiums and a new 9 Substitutes rule on the bench and 5 in game subs, this is a huge deal in the pl where games will be much tighter than other leagues, so for the first season in 4 years are options currently in Attacking midfield and Striker options are seriously underwhelming. IF ETH plays 4-1-2-3 or even a 4-2-1-3 than we need 4 or 5 starting options and 5 options from the bench, the other 4 are obvious a GK, CB, utility Defender and CDM. Ok currently as we are I see the starting team being ;
D De Gea, D Dalot, R Varane, H Maguire, L Shaw, S Mctominay, C Eriksen, B Fernandes, Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford
Subs; T Heaton, V Lindelof, T Malicia, Fred, , DVB, A Elanga, A Martial, A Dialo, A Ganaucho with the caveat that Ronaldo could easily be gone and Martial start with BrIan Brobbey on bench so what do we still need July 2022? In short a bloody miracle but It’s clearly obvious, A RB, CB, CDM, BTB MF, CFW, RW(left footer) bare minimum.

Good window from Here; FDJ, P Tores or L Martinez, P Dyballa, Antony, Patrik Shick (IF Ronaldo Goes)

Need to get the Eriksen and Martinez deals done asap, while waiting for FDJ saga to end positively. Then, go all in on Antony, but not if Ajax insists on the 80m euros. Maybe with some outgoings (Telles, Williams, AWB, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Jones, CR7) we could fund a RB and ST as late transfers.

In an ideal world but football isn’t an ideal world and history should teach you that

Mine updates to this date:

+ One of Frenkie De JOng or Jude Bellingham. I only go for the best options out there. Picky and demand.

+ Patrick Schick = CF and can play as RW in need if Ten Hag want to use a RW

Schick can play RW ( in need) . The boy has the abilities, skill and flair to beat and pass players. Have a good curl ball foot.

Schick not depend on Ronaldo leave or not. But at some stage. We be ready to take over it. Rebuild ready at anytime.

+ Save Antony money for Schick. Give Diallo and Chong half season or a year to prove theirs worth. If not come for Antony next summer or in January.

Drop the wings and go most a diamond 4312 formation:

Eriksen/DVB - Fred/Garner/De JOng - De JOng/DVB + Bruno/Sancho + Schick/Rashford - Ronaldo/Martial/Rashford/Garnacho

Alternative to 4312 with Schick as RW in 433 formation:

Eriksen/Bruno - Fred/Garner/De JOng - De JOng/Eriksen/DVB +

Schick/Diallo/Chong/Sancho - Ronaldo/Rashford/Martial/Schick - Rashford/Sancho/Garnacho

I think and believe with Patrick Schick. 4312 with CF upfront and a Bruno as nr.10 and 433 are the 2 formations that will get the most out of United squad.

+ A formation with A nr.10 + 2 CF upfront is maybe stronger in the attack. If the wingers are not on top level and not as good as Bruno as a free nr.10. And not as good as United CF options. Then you drop the wings and go for a nr.10 and CF.
With 2 CF. Those CF will have and still run out wide and stretch the defend line and i guess and believe United offensive full back will cover the wing areas in Malacia or United righ full back.

Right now United dont have a natural RW and the quality of the wingers are not on top or on a consistent high level. I think it will be advantage to drop the wingers to go for 2 CF + A free nr.10

Well if he can play both positions we should walk away from Antony and go all in for him, sign Dybala as another wide forward option as well.
