What ‘affordable striker’ will we buy in January?

I kinda hope we don’t sign anybody in January so we can really see what Amorim and his staff can bring before we start to reshape the squad.
I’m also reticent about signing a bunch of SCP players. No doubt they have talented players but it’s no guarantee of success just because they know the manager. We need the best possible fit for each position.

So why would Welbeck not be a good signing in January then? We obviously won't sign an expensive striker in the winter, and our current strikers should be given at least this full season to prove themselves anyways.
Because he wouldn’t be joining for 4 months. You can’t hoard players till the current lot prove themselves. Especially if they’re average players like Welbeck. Personally I’d just get on with the season and allow the coach to drill in his system. Then make changes in the summer wheee needed with serious quality since we have enough decent options.

Why would Brighton sell him? At least at a reasonable price that we as a club would be happy with?

Ideas that we could get him for £5m are delusional, Brighton aren’t that dumb. They know to replace him in the side will cost way more, so they would never sanction such a move mid-season. £15-20m is what they would want at a minimum I would guess, which would be a ridiculous fee for a mid-30s striker who’s never bagged more than 10 prem goals in a season. We supposedly looked at him in the summer (I believe on a free?) which would have been an okay move but we’d still have needed another striker - Zirkzee or otherwise.

The scouts need to do some actual work based on the profile Amorim provides.

Someone found gyokeres before he became the “obvious signing”

And please lord when you find them don’t drum up interest that inflates the price a la Hojlund. Just make the offer or walk away ffs.

Really baffling to see Welbeck's name being mentioned as a temporary option to cure of goal scoring woes. What am I missing here? The guy has never scored double digit goals in a season in the Premier league. Hasn't score more than 6 in a PL season in the last 11 seasons. Has scored 9 only twice in his entire career and all other seasons it has been 6 or less. He is a 1 in 4 striker for Brighton , 1 in almost 5 for his entire PL career and 1 in 4.5 in all his appearances. What is going on? How is he going to come in and help? Just because some stupid source mentioned that Daddy Hag wanted him?

Our options are Hojlund and Zirkzee ffs. The idea of going for a Welbeck instead of the likes of Gyokeres, Osimhen and Sesko available for around 65m Is pretty frustrating

Welbeck is such a predictable option that I'd expect from numpties like Ten Hag and Woodward. Hopefully the new guys have more imagination and can find a hidden gem

We let go of Welbeck because he didnt score enough goals. Nowadays he still doesnt score enough goals but we want him to solve our goalscoring problems??? Would rather make Ruud a player-coach.

Is there anyone we can bring in on loan? Or anyone approaching end of contract? I see Ben Yedder is free and his stats seem decent from last season (I haven’t watched him in a couple of years). Maybe him as a stopgap and we go for who we want long term in the summer.

Nobody. Yes, Zirkzee is a total disaster, he should go but Hojlund has potential to score enough goals. What we need is not a striker (especially not the Welbeck, who is old and i guess he never scored more than 8-9 goals in one PL season but i might be wrong), we need a manager who is capable of creating some tactics where the wingers and midfielders actually feed the striker, and we need a couple of better wingers. Rashford should go, Antony too, and we should replace them with quality players. That's it.

Ben Yedder is still without a club and had a decent return last season in the French league right?
he’s a wrong un, released by Monaco because of this

On 11 August 2023, prosecutors in Nicecharged Ben Yedder and his brother with rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault, in relation to an alleged incident involving two women that happened in July in Beausoleil, Alpes-Maritimes.[57]

On 9 September 2024, Ben Yedder was once again charged by prosecutors in Nice, this time on charges of sexual assault in a state of inebriation. The alleged events had occurred the Friday before, on 6 September 2024, in Ben Yedder's taxi.[58]

I suggest you read up on him to see why he hasn’t got a club

I wouldn’t be surprised if you have a look at Nkunku. He’s too good a player not to be starting every week. Think PSG might be sniffing around in January.

We don't need cheap options. We aren't lacking in numbers. What we need is a proven top striker that can come and make a difference.

I was OOTL on the Oshimen saga. Why dint we look into getting him considering he went to Galatasaray on loan ?

The last thing the squad needs is a striker who is signed when already known not to be good enough. This team needs starters who can hit the ground running and improve the first team. If that isn't available, don't sign anyone.

Jonathan David is a free agent in the summer. He could probably be had fairly cheap in the January window as a result. He’s also adaptable enough to play in wide areas etc if we still sign another forward next summer.

Might also help us attract Alphonso Davies next summer if his Canadian buddy is here.

No big team wanted to pay the ridiculous fee Napoli wanted. So he was going to stay there: however him, his agent and the board had a toxic relationship and so he was loaned out at the last minute to a market that was still open

I did not know that. Not my dream signing, but on a cheap/free, that could actually be a great signing. Still baffled why we were never in for Marcus Thuram on a free.

No interesting names coming forward. I would rather give the minutes to Hojlund, Zirkzee and throw Wheatley in there as well. You never know he may rise to the occasion.

Ineos sanctioned the purchase of Zirkzee and Rasmus is fit and we only play with one striker normally.
So where does the story come from that we are after a cheap striker in January?
Utter shite I reckon!

He’s suit the second striker role but can’t see it, too expensive !

Borja Mayoral

Not saying we should, but 20m euro release clause would fit the affordable tag and might even be had for less. Some rumours linking us last January, aware of him through Greenwood being at Getafe, Arsenal too (sources of unknown quality, I don't follow transfer gossip closely).

Probably something to do with our strikers having 3-goals between them so far this season.

Nkunku loan till the end of the season? He’s agitating at Chelsea and we just loaned them Sancho.

Not really a striker, is he? We already have Rashford, Bruno or Mount that aren't natural strikers but can put in a shift up front. Probably even Amad false 9 is a possibility. Wheatley/Obi-Martin too

Yeah he’s more of a false 9, I think he can play across the front three positions in a 3-4-3.

I’m not sold on buying him, but a loan till the end of the season is low risk and gives us a good option, rather than getting ourselves stuck with a striker we buy in January who isn’t a long term fit.

It would mean the new manager giving up on Rasmus or Joshua.....do you seriously think that is going to happen given their age and time they have been at the club?
I don't think so.

Buying a striker would be a huge mistake since it would ignore/not recognize the real issue with our lack of goals. Our wide forwards barring Amad have been performing at a comically bad level, neither Rashford or Garnacho rank in the top 50% of wingers in the premier league. When you compare them to the elite wide forwards like Salah/Saka/Diaz/Son etc it's just embarrassing.

Over the last year Rasmus has averages just 1.5 shots per game, that puts him in the bottom 2% of all strikers across Europe's top 5 leagues for shots taken, he's also in the bottom 6% for passes received.

Spending big money on Gyokeres would be a waste since his performances would only nosedive for the same reasons.

Gyokeres currently has the two highest performing attacking midfielders in the league playing next to him at Sporting, I won't call them wide forwards since Amorin uses them in a more narrow system but the point still stands. This is the equivalent of Rasmus playing in a team that has Saka and Son on both wings.

United lack quality in the wide areas which I'm sure the club is aware of given the efforts they made to sign Olise in the summer. The discussion really needs to be about which wingers we could/should sign.

Too simple to blame is all on the wide players and ignore Hojlunds own failings in this element.

Small sample size but this season in the league Zirkzee is averaging 2.4 shots per 90 compared to Hojlunds 1.05, while also attempting 26 passes per 90 compared to Rasmus at 16.

Zirkzee hasn't really found it difficult to get on the end of things or be involved in the game to anywhere near the same extent as Hojlund.

Yup, Rasmus seems too absorbed with the physical battles. He just needs to focus on the basics - off the ball movement, being available in the box, simple hold up play etc. for some reason he seems intent on showing the world he’s stronger than defenders

Given that unlocking Højlund was part of the talk with Amorim I doubt we sign a striker in January
